I'm really glad to see so much interest in Andre Norton from the list, overt evidence of the intelligence, good taste, etc. of the listsibs. Well, we already knew that, but it's always nice to have it confirmed. Here's the homepage for the Andre Norton Webrings: http://www.xenite.org/webrings/anorton.htm If you get to the index, it will list all 9 Andre Norton websites, including indices, glossaries, webpages, and a message board to which Irene Harrison [co-author of the latest, definitive Andre Norton bibliography] is a frequent poster. Some of the other sites are pretty fun. Enjoy! I would like to propose that we extend the definition of the Order of Nifty And Generally Overlooked Characers [ONAGOC?] to include everybody, regardless of gender--or lack thereof [Warrl rules! Just ask "him" or, better still, Rris]. Then we can add all sorts, from Wintermoon [rrow, rrow], Jadus, Gaytha, Mero, et. al., to Nyara and Need [about whom many stories yet remain to be told. Unfortunately, I doubt Misty'll get to them; as a general rule, she seems to write forward, not back]. Then there's Devren, who must be more important than he comes off in the books, since Misty's written so many songs about him. Don't forget Alberich & co. What about the Teren/Elcarth/Keren/Sherrill group? They keep her going, so she can keep Selenay going. These "queen's own to the queen's own" people don't get nearly enough time/credit, but they're essential. It's one of Misty's better qualities as a writer that she includes these people. Rather than just having a few "heroes" out saving the universe before breakfast, the essential support network is shown and even given some nice bits, but not allowed to take over the main story. It shows clear thinking and foresight on her part. Not only does it add plausibility to her plot, but it gives added dimension/depth/vulnerability/believability to her "main" characters. Although I would submit that these seemingly secondary characters are, in their bit scenes, every bit as detailed/developed as more point of view characters who get longer exposition. Thoughts? The darkness teems with almost movement, your eyes darting about trying to locate something. 'Hello,' a silken voice issues forth, the magically enhanced tones ringing in your ears, but leaving you with a sense of wonder at one who could just 'waste' this power. The voice itself runs little shivers down your spine as you hear it, it's pure controlled perfection scary. The eyes give no clues as to what lies behind them, so you take a chance to look about, wondering how you got here. You were just taking a walk in the forest, stealthy moving about, your senses alert, when you ran across a little gully, hit a small set-spell, one so small you didn't notice that it was tied to the node beneath, and you end up here, in a room that is a cage..but the nicest of it's sort you've ever seen. Their aren't any bars, of a sorts, but the never-ending field of stars gives no direction, and the only starless direction is where the eyes lie, cloaked in darkness. Your eyes return to the seeming cat's eyes, and you make a mental note about this one...'He's dangerous'..as the eyes narrow in pleasure/delight, mostly at your discomfort your sure. After but a poignant moment of waiting, a body issues forth, and you fight off a wave of overwhelming desire. The first thing you notice is this, his Aura of Pure Power, and Sexuality, then you notice him. Most obviously a change-child, and most obviously an Adept of some power, for his power sits heavy in him. Soft, tawny golden fur covers his body, much like a lynx cat, while his claws, in sheaths, 'hands and feet', flex a bit, clicking, amazingly enough, on the star-filled empty-ness, not so empty apparently. Blushing hotly for he seems to flaunt all this before you, before dismissing it, and your reactions to it, he smiles, and your heart warms to him..for although he is most obviously dangerous, you warm to him..... Mage-enhanced tones dropping, only to leave the seductive purr of his voice..'Good Evening my fellow friends. I am different than what some of you may know me as. Although I am the descendent of Ma'ar, I've learned much from my voyage to the other realms. I call now from the spirit-realms, and the knowledge therein. In different ways they each had something special about them. I can't think of more right now because it's late. I'm not trying to start anything. I just was thinking about how many fantasy characters have been sick. I have decided to go by an assumed name this time. Anyway. I just finished reading the newest Oath book Oathblood. It was so cool to be able to see all of those different stories in one collection. I had been looking for ever in a none successful attempt to find the first Tarma and Kethry meeting. THen one day at school my friend come to me and says "Hey, my dad got me a book by that author you love. Do you want to borrow it?" I bet it won't take you long to figur out what my extremely entusiastic{sp?) answer was. I hadn't even known that she was coming out with a new book. I must be getting rusty. Anyway, has anyone else read it yet? Ok that was a stupid question, of course someelse has read. Whoever that/those someone(s) is/are what did you think of it. Don't worry, I won't be crushed if you didn't like it as much as I did. The following may be a bit disjointed, 'cause I've been trying to weed through my messages, and so I snipped the things I wanted to respond to. I'll try to remain coherent *g* First I've gotta jump in and thank Yvonne Shadowshape for the points she made regarding fluff. Hey, folks, Yvonne's a Knight of Fluff and a founder of the Order, and SHE thinks the fluff's out of hand. For everyone out there who wants lots & lots of fluff, I recommend checking out the Order's webpage -- it makes clear that Knights of the Order must keep the greater good of the list in mind. And tho I wasn't here when the Order was formed, I suspect its origins were in a high level of fluff on the list, which is problematic. *sigh -- I'm rambling now* Anyway, please, please, please limit the fluff, guys! Especially the roleplaying. If large numbers of people still wish to roleplay, you could always start another story circle (like was done with Bardic Circle). I agree that some fluff is a vital part of the list...but I've been bypassing way too many messages lately. Oh, and as to Yvonne's sugggestion for a day of fluff, I'd have to say I'm probably not for it...I Like a bit of fluff here and there throughout the posts. It's just when the messages are nothing BUT fluff... *stepping off soap box* Okay, folks, enough said. I'll just add that if ever someone starts a topic that you have much to respond to, consider the possibility of doing so in a private email... ****************** Marty Adkins said <> You know, this is actually one of the reasons I love both Arrows and LHM trilogies: I dearly wish for such a support system (which is unfortunately sorely lacking), and it's part of my relating to Talia...I get to imagine myself with such friends... ********** Chantal said <> Well, I ^relate^ to the dramatic characters; I'm ^attracted to^ the "regular guys." I mean, I never found Vanyel attractive (in fact, never really considered it) -- in my mind I was being him, not considering his attractiveness. With Eldan, Treamaine, etc., they're not tormented, tortured, bewildered, soul-scorched (or at least we're not shown any of this), so I don't FEEL their every move, word, and thought. I just know that I'd love to have them be friends of mine. Does this make sense? ********* Kris Frye said << I think I might even go so far as to venture a guess that perhaps the reason that folks don't seem to like Elsbeth as much as some of Misty's other characters is that she isn't quite as odd or outcast or interesting as an adult. (Though I think she was much more interesting as a child in Talia's stories when she had to overcome being the "Royal Brat") Does anyone else have any opinions on this?>> Well, this ties in to what I was just saying, I think. And I think you're right. Elspeth doesn't have the major holes in her life..heck, once she straightened out, she had all the love and support anyone could ever want. Rather well-adjusted. Not so much conflict to grip you... ********** <<*At this, Yvonne slipps a ring of twined silver, gold, and electrum off her finger and places it on Katie's. When she does so, there is a flash of blueish light, and three rings appear on her hand - one silver, one gold, and one electrum.*>> Eh? When did the platinum turn to electrum? *pouting* I like platinum. Of course, I guess since I've already got a platinum ring I shouldn't complain. It's just that I got to go into a platinum mine this summer, and we even got to take some home with us...Stillwater Complex, some of the oldest rocks on the continent *shiver* *sigh* well, maybe a certain Troll will be able to imagine the wonder of it all... ******* Oh, almost forgot the whole Eldan/Tremane (love 'em both!) thing. First of all, since when was Karal "underappreciated"? I mean, he's a pretty major characher throughout the Storms trilogy, isn't he? Sure, he's not so tormented (uh, see my earlier comments), but I'm not sure he's "unsung." Or perhaps since he doesn't have magic or mindmagic, that's enough...but what about the Altra and the attention of Vkandis -- he's pretty well acknowledged, no? Okay, I noticed a couple of people offering to organize the Oder of Unsung Heroes (I love the OMUG 'cause it's funny, but I think OUH is proably the best description). Why don' t you two (or three) conference in private, come up with a plan, then send a single post to the list telling all interested parties how to get hooked up (off-list). Perhaps take a look at the Fluffian Order and OAM stuff to get a sense...it doesn't have to be highly involved, you know. Anyway, let everyone know who's spearheading the effort, then those people who want to be involved in determining how the Order'll work can chime in; when it's all ironed out, everyone else who's interested can apply for membership/knighthood/etc. **** Okay, that's enough for tonight. Sure I forgot something...Well, still have 200 messages in my inbox to deal with (I've read 'em, but thought I was gonna answer them..yeah, right...) so I'm sure y'all will be hearing from me again soon. No cutesy sign-off 'cause I'm too tired. He certainly had to put up with more than enough attitude from Skandranon and hardly ever complained :) The way this Order thing is developing, of course, no-one will be able to remember exactly which characters are and are not among the ones it's set up to appreciate because there'll be so many of them...:) Katie:(and anyone else interested in Melanie Rawn) To subscribe to the Rawn list, email to listproc-+AT+-usc.edu with a blank subject line and an email body of SUBSCRIBE PANDEMONIUM-L Darvoso: As far as I understand it, use of any Misty-related persona(such as a Tayledras scout)is only allowed on the list if you are actually a member of Queen's Own and use that persona there.
