Can't remember which one, but I think it was in Winds. Anyway, y'all know that Valdemar's borders expanded after Vanyel put up the protection spell. The protection spell is basically just the air elementals set to 'watch' anyone with mage abilities that came into Valdemar. But air elementals are kinda flighty, and don't pay attention to where the borders actually are. So, the only thing they have to go on is where the 'truth spell' was last cast. They are part of that too. It's the only spell that even a herald without true mage abilities can cast, though I speculate that Heralds with a touch of mage ability probably do it best. But I digress. The fact is that, the borders that the elementals know about fluctuate. A lot. So, sometimes the borders 'shrink,' according to where the truth spell was last cast. And any person with mage abilities may come into Valdemar, because they won't be bothered unless they actually cast a spell (which explains why Helda [sp?, I don't have the Arrows books with me] was able to stay in Valdemar as Elspeth's nurse for so long), and the more spells that they cast, the worse it is for them. Most of them can't stand more then one or two. Apparently it feels like someone is always looking over your shoulder. *shake* Well, I hope that this helped a little. I remember the explanation desticntly. I think where Keth was was not part of Valdemar in Vanyel's day, I'm fairly certain. I know in one of the other books there is such an instance. The magic not used part is also right. It was Helga, I do beleive. And as long as she used no magic, she was fine. Also - how could they carry off some of their disguises (like at Mornedealth's gates) if she was that young. With Kethry I think I agree she's around 19 - the textved says "No, things went on like that until I was twelve, and barely pubescent" (p29 Oathbound)- so she was 12 when she married, and to the time elapsed "It's been seven years" (p35 Oathbound) BTW the quote about Tarma looking younger is "In repose she lost a great deal of the cold harshness her expression carried when she was awake. She looked, in fact, a great deal younger than Kethry was." (p 37)This implies (at least to my mind) that Kethry was younger than Tarma. The never make >the wrong choices. . . I understand that the Heralds are supposed to be >this way, but does everyone else have to? Well, in Tarma and Kethry's case, it's kind of understandable. Tarma is a kal'enedral, which means that while she's not infallible, she has to do what the Star-Eyed would agree with. There's a scene where they meet a herald (I wish I had textevd for this, my books are in Milwaukee and I'm not), and (correct me if I'm wrong), Tarma and the Herald are outside talking. The star-eyed visits them and they find that their clothes have switched colors- Tarma wearing white and the Herald wearing black. (butterrum sheep to anyone who can find this scene in the V&H) This seems to indicate that kal'enedral and Heralds are bound to a similar code of honor. Tarma isn't nearly as selfless as a Herald though- she'd much rather get paid for her merc work. A Herald would probably just decide it was his/her duty. Kethry is a white winds mage, plus she's under a sort of geas from carrying Need. She has to help women in need whether she wants to or not. >all of the "bad guys" are demons--there's no trace of humanity left in >them. This tends to be my problem with her work, much as I love Misty. I feel like she tosses in obligatory torture scenes so that she can say "Look! Look! They're *really* evil- not just sort-of evil!" She's so anxious for us to hate her "bad guys" that she doesn't think we'll just take her word for it. I personally could have done without several of the Falconsbane/Nyara scenes and the Ancar/Talia stuff. I find it more enjoyable if the characters are a little more gray. I thought Tremane was a great character- here's a guy just trying to do his job. A little overly ambitious perhaps, and maybe he relies a bit too much on expediency, but he isn't totally evil. I realize that this is sort of a bad example because she turns Tremane into a good guy, but for much of the Storms he's this encroaching force headed for valdemar. One that assassinated Ulrich. I've noticed this, and I think it's actually one reason I like Misty. I also read people who're a lot more complex (IMO), and I like the complexity, but sometimes I want a good guy/bad guy novel (well, a little more than that, but one where I don't get quite so mad at the good characters and don't feel sorry for the bad ones). On the other hand, sometimes it gets on my nerves because I start wanting to be like her characters and I have to stop and think to myself -- "Everyone gets mad, jealous, etc. at some point. Just because the people in the book don't doesn't make it so bad when you do." OH! I can answer this one!!!!! (I just re-read Obreakers yesterday ) The whole thing happens after Keth and Tarma go North and get saved from a storm in the Comb by Roald. The clothes -- actually, it's just Tarma's clothes that change color. She's wearing some of Roald's Whites, since all her clothes are wet, and when she talks to the Star-Eyed, the Warrior canges them to black, the color of vengeance and blood feud. Also, the Star-Eyed mentions that the Kal'enedral and the Heralds are similar. She says: (speaking to Roald) *Vai datha -- so, young princeling, your land forges white Swords that fit the same sheath as My black, eh? This is a good land, yours. It deserves good servants, strong defenders -- vigilant champions to guard and hold it safe as My Hands hold Mine. Do we not all serve to drive back the Dark, each in his own fashion? So I cry -- well met, Children of My Other Self!* (p.181-182, Obreakers pprbk) -Katie Co-Leader of the OoUH _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. "I fear," he said, dropping her hands reluctantly, (Tarma's hands) "that if we don't get back to the others they'll think we've either frozen to death, or gotten lost. "Or," Tarma laughed , giving his shoulders a quick embrace before pulling her cloak back around herself. "murdered each other out here! By the way--" She stretched out her arm, showing him that the tunic she wore was still the black of a starless night. "--I wonder how we're going to explain what happened to the clothing I borrowed?"
