I too live in QLD (in Rockhampton) and get my Misty books from Galaxy Bookstore (a specialty fantasy/sci fi bookstore) in Sydney. Up until the last twelve months I was studying externally through a Sydney Uni and was making trips down there every few months for res school, coming back with large quantities of printed material (and sometimes even larger credit card bills!). They do mail order, I haven't used it yet, but they're located at 222 Clarence Street, Sydney (round the corner from the Queen Vic Building, if you know Sydney at all. They are the best bookstore I've found for stocking new SF/fantasy titles, so if you're keen on any other fantasy/SF authors chances are you'll find them there. If you're ever in Sydney it's worth dropping in- I can and have spent hours browsing the shelves! They get most new titles in hardcover as well as paperback, so if you're desperate and really can't wait for the paperback, the hardbacks are usually available. Another place that I've found in my travels is Minotaur Bookshop in Melbourne. I was last there in 1989 so I can't remember where it is (but it was still there a couple of years ago, a friend dropped in for me), but it was THREE FLOORS of fantasy/sci fi books and associated paraphernalia. I spent a couple of hours in there and can away with an armful of books and there were STILL some I wanted to buy! What a shame we don't have anything like this in Queensland, and that our bookstores are so parochial . Sorry for rambling and the almost nonexistent Misty content. Hope this helps. Anne Rice does this with her Talamasca order. It's a wonderful device for faithful readers I think. -Vrondi "Mistress of the Air, One With the Trees" (and Goddess of Tiger Balm) Misty List Resources: http://edweb.concord.wvnet.edu/~deanca/list/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 08 Apr 1998 12:39:04 -0600 (CST) From: REEVEL-+AT+-Acad.Ripon.EDU To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Tannim Message-ID: <01IVML8VCOKMAR2XJK-+AT+-Acad.Ripon.EDU> Heyla! I also noticed that Tannim was in Jinx High but the scene went by so fast I didn't notice it until he said something about it in Born to Run, or was it Chrome Circle? I can't remember! Well I'm going to have to read them again :) Also when Vanyel put up the web didn't he say that the vrondii would leave alone mages who either were Heralds or were with a Herald. I don't have the books on hand so someone else gets the joy of finding textevd if they want it. *****FLUFF****** Rillian stares entranced at all of the dragons, then she hears someone mention a goddess of unicorns and wonders if there is a god/dess of dragons. *************** Rillian ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Apr 1998 19:42:31 +0100 From: Rainbow To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: truth spell/unsung heroes Message-ID: In message <19980408152025.AAA14147-+AT+-brianben>, brianben-+AT+-worldnet.att.net writes >Ashandra said: > > >>It's the only spell that even a herald without true mage >> abilities can cast, though I speculate that Heralds with a touch of mage >> ability probably do it best. > >Here's my personal theory. Heralds without mage ability can only cast >stage one of the truth spell. Heralds with mage ability can cast both >stages. Anyone care to search for Textevd? Okay... Sorana told me I've got to use textedv as her Avatar... so here goes... ^Digs out AotQ^ pg 279 pb. Ylsa - "You all have Gifts strong enough to bring both stages of the spell to bear." and AotQ pg 273 pb Ylsa - "If you have a really strong Gift, you'll be able to use it to actually force someone to speak the truth; if your Gift is weak, you'll only be able to detect whether or not a person is lying." and - Aflight pg 141 pb Kris - "I'm going to insist - because you can work Second-stage Truth Spell and I can't." and - Mpromise pg 158 pb Vanyel - "/Any/ Herald can work first stage Truth Spell!" So... I suspect that COULD mean that it depends on the type of Gift, and you DO need a 'communication' Gift (can't find textedv but Talia's empathy is near enough...sometimes a good memory for books but not maths ect... comes in handy!) So Griffon, Dirk, Kris ect... can't work 2nd stage. Neither can Lores (he didn't even know how to do 1st stage!) and he's hardly GOT any Mind-Speech. Edric and Drake learn it tho'. But i find it strange that no other non-'communicates' learn 1st stage... Does this help any? Who do I petition to become a member of the OOUH? I decided basically that I had to read it so I could read the 7th book (highly recommended by my friend). One thing I don't like much about this series is the unrealistic portrayal of women. Most of the women in the book are characterized as petty, hypocritical, manipulative and basically dumb. I don't like that at all since, being a girl, I like the whole girl power thing (but not the spice girls!). The only female characters i really like are Morgase and Min. Now I do realize that I could get in a lot of trouble for saying that, but that's what I think. The Song of the Lioness Quartet and the Wild Magic series by Tamora Pierce are also really good. In any case...I'm not horse crazy, but wouldn't it be awesome to have a Companion? sandania hessan ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Apr 1998 16:30:09 EDT From: AprilS81 To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: one very important thing...kinda fluffy Message-ID: <8c2ee151.352bde53-+AT+-aol.com> In a message dated 98-04-08 00:08:11 EDT, you write: << I think eternal randomity is key to the success of any fantasy writer. Where else do you suppose they get their ideas? In any case...one excellent book for any fantasy fan is The Blue Sword buy Robin McKinley. I also want to know if any of you are suffering throuhg the wheel of time series (as I am) and if you would like to form a support group (no, jk, but what do you think of it?). However, I must fly for tis past my bedtime... Sandania Hessan >> Suffer is a great word for the reading of the wheel of time. I picked up the first one, quite innocent of what was to come, and seven books later, realize just what has happened. It started out a good series; for about three or four books, but then they became a bit redundant. The strange part is I keep reading them, and I am even waiting for the next one (which my friend who is obsessed with the series says won't be out this year either!) A support group would be an interesting sort of adventure. You have to be either very random, or slightly insane to write good fantasy...my friends theory is that all fantasy writers lived past lives in an alternate universe...
