Wow! Talk about cynical Now, I love the Bardic Voices series (I hate that Misty seems to give it only cursory attention compared to her other books) but I have often felt that the corruption of the various entities within (specifically the Church and the Guilds) is highly exaggerated. Granted, (and I think we've discussed this recently) there was some real corruption in the Church in RL during the period imitated in the book, but in the Bardic voices book EVERYONE is out to get everyone else...Still, I just love them. >Keep in mind also that many >(most) of Velgarth's countries are in approximately renaissance or >post-renaissance times as far as their economic structures, It's a curious combination of "periods" here - Personally, I think that Valdemar is based on post Magna Carta England (early constitutional monarchy) Interesting note - because of its geographical isolation, England's Tudor period occurred during the rest of Europe's Rennaisance, so the revolutions in thought occuring were a bit delayed in England - I wonder if this happened in Valdemar because of its relative isolation from the surrounding countries - anyway - With the "Storms" trilogy, it seems that Valdemar is on the verge of an Industrial Revolution. Any thoughts? >Does anyone else (of school age, esp., but really of any age) just >long for a school like the Collegium? It is my dream school to a T: small classes, >mature students, and no "Do we have to's?" Also, the atmosphere of a truly >caring environment and teachers who, after the class is over, become friends? Well, my college experience was very much like this, but then I was in a theatre program - It's different when you are part of a program where everyone wants to be there. My professors insisted from day one to be refered to by first name - they even partied with us and played intramural softball with us! I guess I was just lucky. >But if she's a White Winds adept, they use a special resevoir only used by White Winds mages, so she >wouldn't be tapping into the nodes, and therefore possibly not disturbing >the "fabric of mage-energy that lay over Valdemar". I don't have my book handy, but are we sure that they were actually in Valdemar? We know that the boundaries fluctuate based on where Heralds go. Also - (And please provide some textevd here if possible) It seems to me that the mages who belong to power-pooling Mage Schools do not generally use these pools over nodes, but rely on them for times of emergency. Tiny Storm Breaking Spoiler,,, (Imagine how ticked off all these schools must have been when magic was disipated by the final Storm) >I've read every one of those books and loved them. Did you know that >she has written another book about faerie called "Gossamer Axe" and a >series on an alternate America? What is the series about alternate America? Finally, here is a little question in the whole "Companions being able to bespeak anybody" thing - I have just been rereading AOTQ (finished John Irving's "A Prayer for Owen Meany" and needed something to fill the void) and I stumbled upon the scene in which Elspeth helps Talia and Keren deliver the breach-birth foal. The book mentions that the Companion "sent a message" to Keren. This seems to show in the earliest Valdemar book written that Companions can mindspeak anybody, yet it goes largely unnoticed...any thoughts? John E. Robin McKinley is great too if you want to consider some of her characters Doomed, and Issac Asimov's Foundation/Empire/Robot series is excellent, except, they win, boohoohoo, and Jennifer Robinson's Cheysuli is excellent too, and Anne McCaffrey's most beloved character for me was Moreta, because she was Doomed, hehehe. HMMMM? well, now, this is interesting. Anyway, I was reading OBreakers and I found out something interesting....Kethry was in the physical, but only slightly in the magical borders of Valdemar, because Vanyel Defined those as (per page 91, Hback WoFury)"as far as the Vrondi are concerned, the "border" really ends where the presence of active. on-duty Heralds ends. They really dont always notice where Heralds are unless one of them has invoked Truth Spell lately in that area. So the "borders" are changing all the time...." And, pages 190-192 of Oathbreakers says that she pulled off the Adept spell of the White Wind without any problems, only doubt that she could do it, and no, im not tyiping in the whole blasted thing! Read it yourself! Now this pisses me off, cause I can remember quite clearly the fact that Kethry said something to Kero about Valdemar being "peculiar" but I cant find the page. the best I have is...(pg 415 BtS, paper) I wonder if magic doesnt work inside Valdemar? I think grandmother said something about that, once. hmmm maybe if I go afk I will find it! ooooh, I did find text for Keth's grandson getting his Land, in a grant...here...page 107"Of the two that didnt go with the Clans, one picked up where his mother left off, and took over the White Winds sorcery school she'd founded and set up at the Keep-just moved it off onto property he'd swindl-ahem Earned. That's your uncle Jendar." And the whole conversation from pages 182-185 with said uncle Jendar is fascinating, let me give you a few of my favorite lines.... "And the one timeI was in Valdemar was enough for me,'she replied."I'm glad I was just barely across the border. Have you ever been there?" He shivered."Once, like you, just barely across the border. I kept feeling eyes on the back of my neck, but when I'd try to find out what was watching me, I could never find anything. I got the feeling that whatever it was, it was very unfriendly, and I had no intention of staying around to find out what it was and why it felt that way." "It gets worse if you work any magic,"she replied soberly."Quite a bit worse. By the way, this is your niece, Kero." So, though OBreakers does not mention this feeling, she felt it, if you want to cite Misty's more recent work as the correct, more longsigted, more tied in way. Which I do. Maybe I will keep the title Disciple of Textevd after all, Im sure there was one more thing, oh, yes, WoFate, on Need saying something about the same exact "feeling" or maybe, it was ....well, let me go find it. page 269, WoFate "They look now for mage-energies. When they see them, they gather about the mage, and watch, and they do not stop watching unless they see that the mage is also a Herald, and has one of your Talking horses with him....So I kept silent. What else was I to do? I did not wish to draw attention to myself. That was when I drifted back to sleep again" Also , I would like to point out that not only were Talia and Dirk present at the Royal Court in Rethwellan, they also were the Heralds to greet Kerowyn and the Skybolts when they came into Valdemar! So tat least two guest apperances in BtS, not counting any court or anything. Think I will sign off now, and I wonder, did I miss anything? anything that Rainbow didnt or wont cover? (as I am sure she will beat me to it, again, and I do love it, cause I still dont own LHM again, yet!) Or SBreaking, or, well, lots of books, really! There has been much talk of Pooka's of late (I can't imagine why...) and I would like to add my two cents. A Pooka is indeed, as someone said, a shapechanger. They love nothing more than to play pranks on people. When they aren't in the form of a animal or a chair or something, they look like wrinkled, aged men with a childs height and sense of humor. They are kinds cute....I guess....I love 'em! As to the Strands Of... Series (...Starlight, Moonlight, Sunlight, and Shrouds of Shadow) I found them a great read! They were interesting, and they hold a place of honor on my expanssive bookshelf, next to Misty and above Jordan. Another (Sorry, I am terribl for remembering who says what, just insert your name if it was you) mentioned the Eternal Champion. Yeah!!!!!!! Michael Moorcock has a great style for creating characters that really hold your attention. His books are short, compared to, say, Robert Jordan, but good. And Elric/Corum/Kane/Jerry/Hawkmoon...etc. make the books interesting, since they sometimes appear in other stories, because they are all, basically, incarnations of eachother. Very nice! Did anyone else out there find The Last Herald Mage to be amazing? I was quite upset when I ran into a page somewhere that was nothing but complaints on the melancholy atmosphere that was in much of the books. I loved them, personally, and Vanyel and Stef/Ty are still my favorite characters. Fluff-----------Fluff----------fluff------------fluff----------fluff---------- --------------fluff-------------------fluff- April sighed in relief as she plopped down in a vacant, quite comfy chair. No Pooka. No hungry baby dragon. And a good book. She heard the murmmers around her, and heard the word Pooka mentioned more than once. She shuddered and reach for her battered, much loved copy of The Last Herald Mage. A gnarled, small hand snatched it first. With a startled yelp that attracted curious glances from the assorted people and bond critters around her, April tried to grab her book back. The Pooka lay back in his own chair, her book in his hands. :Pooka!!!! He ingored her, reading silently, a slight grin on his face. Resigned to the fact she wouldn't get the book back until the Pooka was quite done, April got up to walk about. A hungry dragonlet met her with a plaintive chirp. "Does anyone have any Sheep..." The dragon perked up at the mention of his favorite food. And glanced about. All they received was a splash as a newbie was soaked near them. End Fluff. The foal-watch was for Companions who hadn't Chosen, so this one didn't have her Herald with her, so that's why Keren was needed, as was Talia and Elspeth, so the Companion thanked Keren as she didn't have anyone else to help her and she wasn't 'bonded' to anyone... textedv...if I can find some... pg 237 - AotQ pb 'Companion mares did not foal with the ease of horses; those who had Chosen, of course, had their Heralds or trainees to stay by them when the time came, but those who had not Chosen had no one.' also pg 237 - AotQ pb 'So one of the duties of the trainees was to spend the nights when an unpartnered Companion mare was nearly ready to foal constantly by her side.' So that means that the Companion wouldn't have esablished a mind- to-mind link between a Herald or trainee, so she could bespeak anyone, and wanted to, normally she'd have her Herald to thank. In Mprice Yfandes NEEDS to speak to Stefen to save her Chosen (ie Van!) and also she knew (as she says she knew what their bond would make her do in the last few pages!) that he was needed and the only way to save him was with Stefen's help. With Sayvil, well Savil WAS a law unto herself anyway, and I suspect that the Companions had their own code-of-conduct (as Kero says Sayvil doesn't care what the others think, or something like that) or are made to stay silent by their Herald-Companion bond, but my OWN therey is that it depends on the Companion's own Mindspeech ability, I mean Savil was a strong Mindspeaker, -> so :. Sayvil could be, if Gaytha (or what ever Herald Lore's Companion was called) wasn't a strong Mindspeaker that could also have contributed to the not-much-speech-bond between them... That's probably total rubbish, but maybe the power that created Companions gave them a set of rules to follow to... (I wasn't around until the 70's. :-) Actually, some people believe that Heinlein was possessed when he wrote _Stranger in a Strange Land_ because it's such an incredible thought provoking book whereas many of his other books are considered by those same people to be pretty "stock" scifi.. that there's such a difference that they could be coming from two totally different writers. I've only read _Stranger_ and _Starship Troopers_, so I can't judge the rest of his work, but _Stranger_ is an amazing book. > Heinlein's writing tends to polarize people, though. So be warned in > advance that while *I* like his books, they're not for everyone. Well, I admit that when I was reading _Stranger_, I had to restrain the part of me that wanted to rant about his female portrayals. It really was Heinlein's "wet dream"... one of the main characters is an aging white male writer surrounded by incredibly beautiful women who fulfill his every need and are more than happy to leave the room when the men need to talk about the important stuff alone. So when I say that the plot made up for this aspect of the book enough for me to like it, I'm saying a lot. :) > ObMisty: Misty's written at least 2 sci-fi books, both of them > collaborations -- "Rediscovery" with MZB and "The Ship Who Searched" > with McCaffrey. Are there any others? Well, she wrote two books with Ellen Guon based on the computer game "Wing Commander" -- _Freedom Flight_ and _End Run_. I've read _Freedom Flight_ and wasn't terribly impressed by it, but it's not a bad book. I think you can order them through www.firebirdarts.com if you can't find them at your local bookstore. Speaking of science fiction writers, does anyone here like Elizabeth Moon? But could youth last, and love still breed, Had joys no date, nor age no need, Then these delights my mind might move To live with thee and be thy Love. --Sir Walter Raleigh ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Apr 1998 14:52:45 -0700 From: FallenAngel To: Misty Mailing List Subject: A little Heinlein/Fluff/God(dess) List/Low Misty Content Message-ID: <352E94AD.2777F927-+AT+-usa.net> Greg Wooledge wrote: Heinlein's writing tends to polarize people, though. By that I mean that many people adore his writing, and just as many hate it. There seems to be very little middle ground. One of the most common complaints is that his female lead characters all seem to follow the same pattern; another is that his books all preach the same theme. So be warned in advance that while *I* like his books, they're not for everyone. I like Elizabeth Moon almost as much as I like Mercedes Lackey. Although I haven't read her Science fiction books I read the Deed of Paksenarrion which I thought was great! In Bardic Voices the corruption in the church is not complete (Wren's sister for example) it only seems that way because the point of view of the books are from people who get in 'trouble' with the church members that ARE corrupt. And anyways if there wasn't any corruption there would be no plot. Companions' talents are a varied as the heralds they once were so those who were strong mind-speakers as herald would probably be strong mind-speakers as a Companion. Just my two cents. ***FLUFF***** Rillian was comfortably resting in the the shadows listening contentadly to the conversation flowing around her. There's another one that nobody has remembered yet. :) I can't give you the pages or anything, but it's in one of the last chapters of AFall, when Dirk and Elspeth are going to try to bring Talia back from Ancar's castle. Neither one of them has the power in and of themselves to do it, but when they start, Roland (*megasigh*, I hate not having these books with me, is that they right spelling?) and the other Companions that are there at the boarder go to the tent they have commandeered and Roland 'talks' to Dirk, saying that they will help and give them the power they need to get Talia back. On Hienlien, I've never read _Stranger in a Strange Land_, but my dad did get me to read _Glory Road_. Very, very, very good book. As for Elizabeth Moon, I haven't read much of her stuff. I think basically the only thing was _Gate of Darkness, Child of Light_(I think that's the title anyway. Haven't read that in a long time either.). Another good elf writer is Josepha Sherman, even if it does take her forever and a day to get a new book out. Am I the only one who is annoyed at the fact that she is taking so long with the final book of 'The Prince of the Sidhe' trilogy? Hmm....anything else I can add? Oh, yeah...Sorry about the skirt, Ari. Those brownies got out of control. Hope they didn't scare Mandi too much. *mumbles slightly* I miss my kitty cats. Oh well, I'll deal.
