[BTW, I've only ever read Velgarth, if that makes a difference to anything] Since then, I've decided never to let schoolwork interfere with reading Misty again Basically, because... well, Misty books are soul food. :) I find reading Misty literally spirit calming/inspiring. Not just that, but during the time I am reading and for several hours or days later, my perception of the real world changes somehow, in a good way, and I walk around in this emotional/inspired Misty-daze, except it's not really a daze because I feel anything but cloudy. So 1. Does this make any sense whatsoever? (It's 2:10 am here and I'm not sure if anything does at the moment) :) 2. (sortof connected to the first) Subject - Misty passages that have really influenced you/captured exactly how you feel about something. Currently, mine is her concept of lifebonding... For me, it's what I was looking for in response to the idea of "true love" or finding "the one". In particular, a piece of Storm Rising. (I put it at the end for SPOILER sake.) 3. To be lifebonded or not to be lifebonded - your preference? "... So far as I can see, the difference between being in love and being lifebonded is rather like the difference between doing something because you want to and doing it because someone came along and put a geas on you to compel you to do it. You might have wanted to do it anyway, but the notion of being compelled to do it...makes me very rebellious. Quite frankly, if I met my lifebonded, I would try to fight the compulsion just because it was a compulsion. and I would insist that something more than a compulsion held us together." "I can't see that." Firesong shook his head. "Lifebonded mates are so devoted to one another, so bound up with each other, it seems the perfect way of life to me. Being lifebonded means there are no misunderstandings, no jealousies, no incompatibilities; none of the things that cause so many problems in ordinary relationships - " But Silverfox was chuckling in earnest now, as if he had said something very amusing. "Who told you there were no misunderstandings, no incompatibilities?...Believe me, I've had lifebonded couples as clients in the past, and they have their share of both those things. The only difference between them and ordinary couples is that if they don't resolve problems quickly, they're going to suffer far more agony of spirit than you or I would." <---------------------------------+ bsteinbe-+AT+-chat.carleton.ca | "Journalism: yet another http://chat.carleton.ca/~bsteinbe | dreadful 'ism." :) ----------------------------------+ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Apr 1998 07:21:31 -0300 From: "Nelson Greenslade" To: "Misty" Subject: short Message-ID: <01bd69ea$9783c160$LocalHost-+AT+-epzfbrwg> Well, this'll be quick. I always claim that "my mother raised me right, on 'Star Trek' and 'Twilight Zone.'" Actually, I was a bit too late for the original show, but caught up later. Almost the first science fiction I remember reading were short stories [both quicker and easier to read, especially in school], by Asimov, Clarke, and the original Star Trek readers. Even edited down by James Blish, they still contained the ideas of Theodore Sturgeon, D. C. Fontana, Harlan Ellison. I'll grant you, Clarke and Asimov weren't always that much for character development, but the *ideas*! so clever, yet expressed in such lucid prose. Ideas came first, both bait and hook. Then came the next stage, of writers who combine the best of ideas, plot, theme, and character development, so dexterously mixed as to become inextricably twined, bonded like base-pair sequences on a DNA molecule. There came a time in my life when I noticed that I was reading mostly women writers, specifically Andre [Norton], Annie [McCaffrey], and Marion [Zimmer Bradley]. Then came Misty, and the Big Three became a Big Four. A while back, when I first joined the list, there was a thread about who we like to read. When responding to that, I also posted about why I like to read *my* particular authors. Basically it was because they combine intelligence, humor, and integrity in the very best way; they exemplify these things, not only in their writing, but in their lives. I don't claim Cennydd's linguistic attainments, but I can notice a word when it jumps out and bites me. I think my very favorite word in the whole Book of Mormon is "forth." It's used so often: go forth, come forth, send forth, bring forth, and, best of all, shine forth. Think about the sense of "forth"--the direction is outwards, extending the reach from oneself to others. This is another trait all the people I admire have in common, although each does it in her [his] own way, according to individual gifts. My mom feeds multitudes, my dad gives people jobs, and these authors nurture and inspire whole generations of people, writers and otherwise. Andre, Annie, and Misty seem to do it more with individual encouragement and collaboration, where Marion is a whole franchise in herself, with the anthologies, the magazine, and the collaborations, but the principle is the same. They are examples, stirring us to emulation almost in spite of ourselves. They come from different backgrounds, different life experiences, even different generations. Andre's a spinster librarian who deprecatingly refers to herself as a "staid teller of old-fashioned stories" while quietly changing the world. Annie and Marion both found themselves writing to support children they had to raise on their own. Misty seems to have a good marriage-collaboration-partnership with Larry. Yet, despite their divergences, they have this in common: they give. Andre offers friendship, letters, encouragement; Marion offers professional opportunities. Misty and Larry seem more community-oriented; Larry and some of the entourage volunteer with the local fire department, and anyone wishing to become a herald through Queen's Own has to be involved in service on a regular basis, on a personal level. Because we read them, we admire them, and we are fired to emulation, we too give. This list is one of the ways we reach out to each other. We share information, insight, feelings, and, yes, even fluff. A list is like any other community; there will be cycles, and tides of fluff will ebb and flow. It is an interesting irony that the most recent wouldbe-dammer [both with and without the "n"] of the flow is one of the major initial instigators, namely our beloved Mage. His Friendship Ring story has grown to include us all. Rituals give meaning and identity to individuals and communities [see _The Little Prince_ by Antoine de Saint-Exupery for his illuminating discussion with the fox, about how we "tame" each other]; the Passing of the Ring is one way we reach out to each other. I would submit that fluff is another. I don't do it much myself, having always thought that my characters should have their own names and speak with their own voices. By the time I try to explain who a character is, I might as well write the book and let people read that. In other words, I'm too lazy or insufficiently inspired to bother. It's fun to read, though, and it obviously means much to many among us; else why would they do it? In her dozen Friends of Darkover anthologies, Marion invited people to play in her world. She enjoyed it, knowing most of them would eventually find their own voice and move on to their own worlds, some of them starting in the [to date] 15 Sword and Sorceress anthologies. And because Marion and Misty were there, here we are. And now He Who [like Rumpole's wife] Must Be Obeyed has said we must cut down on the fluff because a few people have allegedly gone away because of it. I read their "farewell" posts and, frankly, didn't buy it. They may have been trying for attention or have had other things going on in their lives; there simply isn't enough fluff on this list to warrant giving up something so enjoyable for so childish a reason. If they don't want fluff, let them get the digest format and scroll through it and quit spoiling other people's fun. Granted, the digest form eliminates that handy "reply" feature, but we're supposed to be replying to several threads in each posting anyway; it's called "braiding," remember? It's not that hard to jot down the names of people/threads you want to reply to as you scroll down the list. It's so easy to get bogged down in details--should fluff be derivative or original? how much? how little?--that we are in danger of losing sight of the vital principle: reaching out to each other. I've been known to inveigh against derivative characters/usenames myself, yet find myself considering reading whole new authors and series because of exposure from eager listsibs. Under the fluff, there is genuine feeling and friendship. All the pouncing, licking, sploshing, sheep-ing, etc. are our way of saying, "I care about you; I want to get to know you better" in fun and creative ways. Isn't that why we're all here? Message-ID: <19980416.173108.8111.4.lythande8-+AT+-juno.com> The bond that Vanyel established was NOT the "heraldic" bond. What he established was a transfer of the guardianship linkage from four guardians to all the living heralds, by virtue of their companions. The purpose of the linkage was so that when trouble threatened foreseers would be given precience of the danger, farseers would feel compelled to look for danger in the direction it existed and those needed to combat the danger would feel compelled to go there immediately, without knowing why. The death of King Valdemar was known to the heraldic circle not when he died, but when the magic bell in the belltower began ringing, without a ringer. How much each herald knew was based on his or her gift's strength. All knew who, and some would know when, where and how. This is covered in AofQ, when Talia is laid up in bed following an assassination attempt and Skif, I believe, explains the nature of the bell and some history to her. Thanks!!! :-) Next: the web discussion. The first Van every mentions the web from what I've found is on page 38 in Magic's Promise (paperback) when he is talking to Savil: Van : "So they made you Guardian? In how's place?" Savil: "Lancir's. Shavri can't; she tried and she can't. The four Guardians have to be Herald-Mages. Then Savil talks about the exsisting web on page 42 in MPromise: Savil: "Won't take me but a day to set my focus in the Web and then I can guard from Forest Reach as easily as from here. It is only a matter of Sensing a threat and sending the alert, you know." On page 309 of MPromise Jaysen tells Van what he should do to the Web: Jaysen: "Figure out how to change the Web-spell so that it doesn't need Guardians anymore, just the Heralds themselves." So before Van changed the Web if was nothing more than a way to sense a possible threat to Valdemar and only by the four Guardians tied into it. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Birka wrote on 4-17-98: >>3. That was me. I completely forget that you "furriners" have to wait to get the books. I know it's been said before, but what books are still spoilers? Chantal, I don't think we'll have to worry too much about Karal, actually. He and Natoli WILL be together for at least a good while, after all. It's just if Karal will have to go back to Karse that I think we'll see them separating. Well, not if, when. Solaris can't keep him there forever, I don't think. Now, An'desha-that is a different story. But would he actually be comfortable with another person so close to him. He was burned so badly. Even Firesong was more of a dependence/confidence booster than anything else. I think the shamans CAN have relationships, but I just don't seem him together with anyone in the future. I think he'll end up more comfortable with the slightly impersonal relationship between shaman and clan. Any ideas, people? I'm going to refer to WFury here since I don't think that will be spoiler potential, so...When I first heard about the lifebonds in AoQ, they sounded like such a good idea, me being in a no-relationship time for about 4-5 years. But, Stefen (& others) use such good arguments against them. Well, not against them, since they work for certain couples, but in the world *I* know more about, they have started to seem not quite right for most of the rest of the people. I think Misty is starting to think that way, actually. The number of lifebonded has stayed level since the end of WFury. Boy, is this post depressing! I wonder if I can cheer it up? Oh, yes. I just went to State College with some friends, hit TWO used book stores in about a 4-block radius and came out with 3 books. Netiquette is simple and clear on this: A spoiler is a piece of information or plot twist which if revealed will remove someone's enjoyment. The netiquette simply says you must put **spoiler** in the subject, and at the top of the email, and there must be 25 - 30 lines clear before the spoiler begins. Then, any spoilee can choose to read the spoiler or not. So just put the spoiler last and point to it with simply the book/author so ppl can assess if they read it already. \/ \/ \/ \/ SPOILER \/ \/ \/ Like this :)~ Dex Valdemar Administration telnet://talker.com:2345/ ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 1561 **********************************
