As someone who is lifebonded, I wanted to say something about this. It *is* the most amazing thing that could possibly happen. You become one person in two bodies, each enhancing the other. You feel the other person's moods and often experience the same things, sometimes without realizing it. (For eg... he's not feeling well, neither are you...but you don't find out until you compare notes.) It's really indescribable unless you've actually felt it. But along with this special bond comes a responsibility as well. You could destroy the other person so easily, but you would also destroy yourself. You have to be there, no matter what, and be totally honest, no matter hard it might be. It hurts physically as well as emotionally to be miles apart, and yet you must do your best to support your 'ashke through it, even as they help you. You put him/her first, without hesitation. Maybe I've said too much, but I think Misty had a lot of insight to write of the lifebond as she did. It's one of the things I really like about her books, now that I truly understand. The only reason Vanyel can live on after Tylendel (when all other lifebonded who have lost ther partners die) is because he is *needed* and surrounded by special care. That's the only thing that would make it possible to go on. She's right. Anyway, I just thought I'd comment on the suggestions made by...uh, that newbie that didn't sign a name. <> Um, I don't think we need them. I mean, most people (excepting, say, me) put in the subjects the main thread of what they've written, and lots of us already say in that little space that our message has fluff, or is all fluff,etc...most of the time. The same goes for several people outside of myself that announce that they have ObMisty in their letters...even though I was under the impression that we were supposed to have some in almost every post. And the personal listsib to listsib stuff is one of the reasons we're all on this list in the first place, right? To talk to other people who like Misty's stuff, and see if we have anything else in common, to discuss our views on all the stuff important to us, and to maybe evn make a few friends. The spirit of this is pretty much summed up in a poem I was emailed recently: I have never seen you before But I know you are really there I click you into reality Like magic in the air Your voice is like an angel Though I really do not hear Your hug as warm as any Of the loved ones I hold dear You are always there for comfort Or a word of cheer Though you are very far away I always have you near You are a very special friend Like none I have ever known As long as you are in cyberspace I will never be alone And on that note I'l just skedaddle. If they > don't want fluff, let them get the digest format and scroll through it > and quit spoiling other people's fun. Okay, first of all, let me point out that the issue of fluff is not really open to much debate. And not because *I* personally must be obeyed. At the moment, I am writing as a member of the Council of Mist and this is a matter of list policy. People have left the list because of an excess amount of fluff, and the Council has received complaints about the amount of fluff on the list. There are a number of reasons that this cannot continue: 1) This is a Mercedes Lackey discussion list. The purpose of this list is not to be a venue for role-playing (although some slight amount is acceptable within the confines of on-topic discussions and sig files). 2) Fluff costs money. There are many people on this list who have to pay for their connect-time or pay by the byte for downloadable email. That means that every byte of fluff is costing these people money. 3) Fluff is a burden on vanyel. This list is hosted on Melanie Harper Dymond's business computer. Every bit of mail that gets sent to the list has to be processed and sent to over 400 people. That's a lot of processing resources being used. If the volume of the list gets too high, it starts to interfere with Vanyel's performance and that is bad for Mel's business. 4) (most important reason) Auntie Mel has said that fluff is "a bad thing" for all of the reasons given. If for no other reason, common courtesy towards our hostess should motivate everyone to abide by her guidelines for this list. The bottom line is that fluff is less than welcome. A little fluff here and there is okay, it makes the list more fun and friendly. A lot of fluff, particularly role-playing fluff is not acceptable. And btw, off-topic but essentially related subjects (like what other authors are good to read, and the like) are not "fluff." An occasional post of greeting to several new list-sibs is fluffy, but certainly tolerable. Several screens worth of role-playing is not. Then on Sat, 18 Apr 1998, Caillet wrote: > You don't want to read it than skip it and delete it. It is always > marked as fluff after all. This is one of the questions in the frequently asked questions document that Mel wrote when she started the list. The answer to "why can't people just skip fluff or delete it, if they don't like it?" is "why should they have to?" This isn't a fluff list. It is a list with a very clear and defined topic: discussion of the works of Mercedes Lackey. And then, on Sun, 19 Apr 1998, Grace E Cross wrote: [snip of build up to proposing the following headers:] MIST - Relating to Mercedes' books and stories Non-MIST - Relating to other writers other than Mercedes Lackey CHAT - Personal, between list members, not book related FLUFF - No description needed here, I think:) The only problem with this is that The last categories are not really appropriate for the list. A certain amount of fluff and chat is expected and tolerated, but personal email should not be sent to the list, it should be sent to the person it is intended for. Fluff should be kept under very tight rein and should be sent to the list sparingly and should never approach the same percentage of the list volume as Misty discussion. I know that some people here may have gotten the impression that role-playing was one of the purposes of this list. I'm sorry that things got so far out of hand as to give that impression. If you are new to the list, I would suggest reading the FAQ, Auntie Mel's Rules of Thumb, and the Newbie Fest. All of these documents can be found at the following URL (either directly or as links): http://www.ling.udel.edu/hyde/pers/misty/newbiefest.html In a way, I almost regret starting the Ring Ceremony, which the Council decided to start as a way of welcoming newbies and acknowledging people who make this list a good place for discussion. I don't regret the Ring Ceremony itself, of course, but if I had known how much fluff it was going to generate, I would never have proposed it and I'm sure that the rest of the Council would have soundly vetoed it. However, that was then and this is now. I don't think that Mel or any of the Councilmembers have any objections to the Ring Ceremony continuing (as Jerrie pointed out it has become part of the social rituals of the list), but I am going to say, officially, as a member of the Council, speaking for Mel, "No more extensive role-playing fluff on the list." I haven't read my mail in two weeks so I'm very far behind. BTW I just found a copy of Prison of Souls in the local UBS I was so happy to finally find it that I had to buy it right away, and risk the chnace that I might fall behind in my schoolwork. You see I am starting it on my spring break and there is now way that I will have it done when I return to school tomarrow.(SP) Anyway the book is great so far and I cannot wait to finish it and go in search for the lost copy of Burning Water. I was very buried in e-mails, not that that is a bad thing. Over the weekend I bought Fiddler Fair and The Lark and the Wren. I really, really liked FF, especially the stories about Martis and Lyran, someone said (sorry cant find the email) it would be great to have a series about them. I absolutely agree, I'd like to read much more about them! So far I'm only about 5 chapters into L&W, but its really like it too. (See a pattern here? Wonder why I'm on this list...) The Bardic series is a good one. The first one I got was 4&20 Blackbirds. I actually got my non-Misty sister to read it, and she liked it! (However, she wont read any of the others beside The Elvenbane ). I kinda sorta wanted to put a fluffy in here, but since its seems to have been discussed slightly while I was away, here's my short fluffy: ~~Cymrey accepts the ring from Katie and slips it onto her middle finger, it glows briefly and then subsides, looking again like a normal ring. She looks up to see Katie already moving on to give the other members of the Order their amulets. "Thank you," Cymrey calls after her and waves a hand goodbye for now. She glances around her and sees Karen coming towards her with a dagger in hand. She gives a small sigh of relief when the warrior flips the dagger, offering it to her hilt first. Cymrey takes the dagger gingerly into her hands and thanks Karen for it. She watches as laughter passes through the warriors eyes and then tucks the dagger into her belt for safe keeping. And makes a mental note to learn how to use it in the near future.~~~ Got a little longer than it should have, but I really had to thank them. Anyway, that's all I cant get for now.
