ShadowWolf - they are definitely heading to some kind of industrial revolution with the building of that steam engine....those students were really working hard. But, in a world based on magic, and Valdemar being agricultural in nature, technology should be introduced slowly....of course, since the second cataclysm, it'll be interesting to see what exactly they do with the magic. The channeling of the rivers and nodes of magic by the Hawkbrothers in Owlflight definitely opens up some possibilities. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 May 1998 05:19:10 +0000 (GMT) From: Valdemar Administration To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: purity & truth Message-ID: On Wed, 6 May 1998, Nvrtrngbk wrote: > All this discussion about "purity of language" and not tampering with the > originals almost sounds as though folks were insisting that there is "one, > true way" (obmisty, btw). As a person with a degree in English, I feel qualified to say something on this matter. Several have raised issue with the way things have changed over the years and what is 'right' or 'wrong.' I have studied the English language and literature extensively. One has only to take a step back to realize how drastically, and often rapidly, both have changed over the years. What is 'right' is only what is considered by the majority at the time to be proper and correct. As I have seen, even in the course of my own short lifetime, change is inevitable. Some people will view this evolution as a positive thing, while others will see it as negative. This debate can be applied to a number of issues, past, present, and future, but I do not think there will ever be a true solution. Each person should decide what is right for them personally and follow it, but with the guiding rule that it not be of harm to others. Maybe I have taken a simple issue and applied it too largely, but I believe it is a valid point. Variety is what makes life interesting, and I think Misty's extremly varied characters illustrate this well. :) Morianna Valdemar Admin telnet://talker.com:2345/ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 May 1998 05:39:35 +0000 (GMT) From: Valdemar Administration To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Big Braid:Disney,Elsa,Skiff,Tolkein,Misty,Fluff,obMisty Message-ID: On Thu, 7 May 1998, John E Morris wrote: > How do we ever expect these kids to learn to love reading for the > simple enjoyment of reading? By all means, introduce kids to books as soon as possible, however, don't cut off other avenues of imagination. It is true that I was introduced to books first, and took to them, reading rabidly anything I could get my hands on. My parents barred me from any television until I was 9 yrs old and then finally let me watch nature shows, then eventually Disney, etc. It hasn't harmed me, but I would suggest less 'stark' guidelines. I have had to fight every step of the way to find my own individuality amidst my parents' conservativism. Children should be given room for the imagination to mature and grow. Let them see the movie *and* read the book. That will give them the opportunity to enjoy the trusting naivity of childhood, and yet learn to balance belief with a more realistic view. I don't think I would ever have dared my parents' dissaproval in high school to read Misty books if it hadn't been for the open-minded approach I taught myself. I think several people have made good comments regarding the problems with the debate that got out of hand, but I would like to add that I think that editing another person's post is rather tastless. I might notice something (proofreader at a publishing house, anyone? ;)) but I wouldn't give it a second thought, as long as I can understand what they mean to say. About Misty and technology... I think that her setting, which revolves mostly around a world of magic (at least in Valdemar), is ideal for what she is doing. The low level of technology allows the suspension of belief for a while as we enjoy the wonder of magic. Yet I also love watching "mind numbing programs on T.V. [I've sat through entire episodes of Xena because it was on. Some people think it will get confusing but I can keep every character and plot separate. Does that mean that I am unable to sit through so called rubbish on T.V.? Believe me it is not. I watch day time t.v here in the UK when I don't have to be in classes or work, if you want to talk mind numbing then this is the stuff for you. I can spend and entire day vegetating in front of the tube and then go and read Wild Swans[ believe me that book is hard going, over 600 pages of the history of China from the turn of the century to the mid 80's through the eyes of the females of one family] > < younger generation to READ - we should never give them the crutch of > animation that is Disney until they are old enough to see it for the > crutch that it is. Most children know what is real and what it not, they know Disney films are entertainment and love them because of it. >The truly bright and gifted people are readers, not > watchers . Television, not religion, is the opiate of the masses. I'm sorry but does that means people with reading difficulties are not bright people? Yes I agree that reading is very important and should be encouraged but I agree with a statement somebody else made [ sorry can't remember who] that if you say to children that they can't watch t.v. until they have read a chapter and can recall it verbatum then you shoot yourself in the foot because they will not do it. or if they do they will hate it therefore when they grow up they will not read for enjoyment and will not encourage their children to because they were forced to read as children. I disagree with the Fourth Commandment as you've written it. In fact, it is in direct conflict with the Fifth Commandment. If freedom is precious -- if it's one of the only things worth living or dying for -- then a commandment which prohibits us from doing or saying things is counterproductive. This way my kids get a good balance of things from TV. We also live on a farm and have many things to do so the girls don't get as much TV as they would like sometimes. The longer a mage sticks around, the more of them come to watch. It's horribly uncomfortable, since mages can sense the vrondi, and it's rather like being stared at by an increasing crowd all the time. The borders have changed since I set the spell, and so far as the vrondi are concerned, the "border" where the presence of active, on-duty Heralds ends. They don't always notice where Heralds are unless one of them has invoked Truth Spell lately in that area." Well there is a bit more but this should cover a lot of what we were discussing. Sorry if anyone had already found this. I came across it and didn't want to lose it. ***************************************************** I know that the Lifebond and lovebond thing is old also but I came across this and thought I should mention it. It is like a marriage - you marry who you think you beloved is, and then discover who they really are over the years. It's that discovery that makes a marriage work." Stef was right on. That is exactly what my relationship with my husband does. In a lot of ways we are complete opposites, but we enjoy introducing the other to new things. I felt our relationship was different from a lifebond and yet neither one of us can do without the other. Misty usually writes about one or the other. Here is a perfect example of both. My other thought on this is to enjoy what you have no matter what it might be (love or life bond). I have something to add (oh no everyone yells). I have read to my two chldren since they were about two years old (they are now 10 and 16). I continued doing so nightly until they were in the third grade. Now each of my children read every night. They love to read. Also, I allow them to watch T.V. Yes, I know there is "stuff" on the tube that is tasteless. But I figure it this way--life is tasteless at times. I want my children to see life as it truly is not as I (or Others) wish it to be. Life is not sanitized. My children do not hate others because of skin color, religion, or sexual preference. (Great because there father is Shaych). We--as society--do more harm by force feeding a sanitized vision onto our children then if we let them experince the world as it truly is. How can the bad be changed when we don't acknowledge it exists? (OK now I'm finished with this) Does anyone have any suggetions for good reading. I'm looking for books that portray--strong gay charcters. Input is welcome. If it weren't for the Last Herald Mage books, I still would be hiding my own feelings thinking that somehow I was flawed. I ain't flawed, I'm just a diamond cut in a unique way. My best to all of you--you make my day with some of your postings. (you also encourage me to continue writing on my novel that one day will sell--maybe I dream, but maybe not) PEACE, Tristain p.s. I didn't proofread and I'm an English teacher. I will admit that I read far more than I watch tv (I read about 3misty size books per week/ I only watch about 5-6 hrs of tv a week.) and I have no life outside of books tv and the telephone(all said to rot your brains; granted it was said a long time ago.) About the laws I feel thusly(is that a word?): First Commandment: There ain't no such thing as 'one true way,' and the way you find is only good for you, not anybody else, because your interpretation of what you see and feel and understand as the truth is never going to be the same as anyone else's. >>>I agree with this full heartedly. If everyone believed the same thing there would never have been the Holy Wars etc..... Second Commandment: The only answers worth having are ones you find for yourself. >>>Too true Too true... Third Commandment: Leave the world better than you found it. >>>I'm wiccan and do that automatically.... Fourth Commandment: If it isn't true, going to do some good, or spread a little love around, don't say it, do it or think it. >>>The saying Do unto others as you'd have them do unto you applies here as does the phrase If you don't have something nice to say don't say anything... Fifth Commandment: There are only three things worth living for; love in all it's manifestations, freedom, and the chance to keep humanity going a little while longer. They're the same things wprth dying for. And if you aren't willing to die for the things worth living for, you might as well turn in your membership in the human race. >>>I agree with this fully and wish others would be able to understand why I feel the way I do.... I'll get down off my soap box now.. I know this came up once before and a lot of people had good suggestions (which I don't remember), but since then I've noticed one that wasn't mentioned. The Exiles series by Melanie Rawn has a couple of really strong gay characters. I love them, and the books are a great read. The first book is _Ruins of Ambrai_ and the second is _The Mageborn Traitor_. The third book, _The Captal's Tower_, will be coming out next year. I know this wasn't long, but I just wanted to add that comment. Message-ID: <19980509223224.661.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> Whew, done! Sorry...Heyla to all, As I just made abundantly obvious, I'm another newbie. I'm just rejoicing in the fact that I just got caught up on all the misty-list mail that has been accumulating in my in-box from the past week (64 messages in all). Junior year leaves VERY little time to do anything other than work, and as this is the start of AP week, it's even worse! But I digress. Many thanks to all the cool people who wrote the NewbieFest. It helped explain alot (one word? two?) of things that had me puzzled. Anyway, my name is Shana Stormsong, I'm almost 17, and (of course) love Misty. I started with Arrows of the Queen a couple years ago, and now realize that Misty books are overunning my bookshelf. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing mind you. I also love Terry Pratchett, Terry Brooks, Anne McCaffery, and Robin Hobb. Any other Hobb fans here? I've got a few questions about the Farseer trilogy if there are. Just to comment on a few previous topics: technology on Velgarth: I think the less the better. I would be especially dismayed if telephones or gunpowder were invented. but thats just my opinion. Reading+TV: Okay, I've faced the fact that I can't watch as much TV as I want/used to, but the VCR is a wonderful thing! Hey, I'm a child of the eighties, what can I say? But about reading, I hate the fact that I can't read as much as I used to. I don't remember when I started reading, but I know that It used to take up huge chunks of my time. I used to read massive amounts every week up 'til high school, when I realized that it was impacting (negatively) on my grades. Even then I was in denial, but now I think that getting into the colleges I want to might be a good thing, so now I read even less, and I mourn that fact every time I go to the library for a research paper and find myself gazing longingly at the fiction section. Random Stuff: yes I would love to hear more about Skif, yes I think Companions are reincarnated Heralds, yes I saw Merlin and liked it even though its accuracy was questionable. So aside from one last question, I'm done: How does one become a member of the order of the Unsung heroes? Feel free to hurl things at me if I missed it!
