I don't think it is a Foresight. The dream is very different from the one Vanyel has after his Gifts has been activated. The only trhing in common is the ice, but in the fist case it seem to be a symbol of Vanyel loneliness, in the second it is an element of the landscape. On the subject of Heartstones: I agree you can't build a "traditional" heartstone and move it, but I think you could create a stone to use a power sink. What I mean is that instead of feeding the stone from the ley lines, you could use the mage energy to build a store of power to be tapped when needed. I am not sure how much power coul be accumulated this way. I think an adept could channel a lot of energy, and some stones could be passed down within a mage school (just speculating). Someone can tell me if the idea could work (or why it is not feasible)? ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 May 1998 09:21:46 -0400 (EDT) From: "Stephen M. I was taught to read at 3, and had been watching Disney since 1. I was also taught the fact that most of the movies are "Disney-fied", or prettied up in order to make a better movie. I was also taught that taking someone's word for it can get you into some very sticky situations, so as soon as I was old enough I borrowed the books from the library and read the real story. Besides, TV and movies teach us a lot about life that we might not otherwise learn. Granted, books do too, but, well. If you think you're going to be answering more than one post, please read everything first and then answer in one long post (or "braid") rather than multiple short posts. It's much less annoying to readers, and it's easier on the mail server hosting this list. And, on a similar note, if you're ready to send your post and notice that it's under, say, 5 lines, it's probably not worth the bandwidth... remember that everything sent to the list is mailed to hundreds of people. Another good rule of thumb is that if your signature is longer than your post, something is VERY wrong.[0] Lastly, if you EVER receive anything via email that says something like "for every person this email is sent to..." or "Craig Sherigold" or "CASH!" or something similar, do yourself and everyone else a favor: delete it immediately and don't send it on to anyone. Really. Most of the time, these are emails that start out with good intentions, but by the time most people get them, they are out of control. For instance, the Cancer Society is not going to donate any money for cancer research because... it itself is a fund to research cancer. What's it going to do, donate money to itself? Especially, don't ever send anything like that to any mailing lists! For further questions, read the Newbiefest http://www.ling.udel.edu/hyde/pers/misty/newbiefest.html or Auntie Mel's Rules of Thumb: http://www.herald.co.uk/local_info/rules_thumb.html or ask a Councilor of Mist (these people identify themselves in their .sigs) Anyway, apologies to everyone who already knows this already :) ObMisty: On the subject of one-way lifebonds: I think that, at least in Misty's universe, such a thing wouldn't happen. Lifebonds seem to be a mutual bond between two (or three) people. On the other hand, judging from Van and Tylendel's relationship, the bond doesn't seem to need to be the same for both people. IIRC, Van seems to be much more dependent on Lendel than the other way around. This may have been because of Lendel's other bonds to Gala and to his twin... or it may just have been personality differences. Lendel was certainly much more sure of himself and his sexuality than Van. Isn't there a line in which Lendel's ghost comes to Van and says "I didn't love you enough" or something to that effect? --Laire [0] This includes the "Yahoo" and "hotmail" and other various sigs that many free mailhosts use.[1] [1] Yes, this is my pet peeve :) __________________________________________________________________________ | Kris Frye | "These are not the droids we are looking for." | | kfrye-+AT+-reed.edu | http://www.reed.edu/~kfrye | ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 May 1998 12:23:07 MST From: "Heather Persellin" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: RE:sheep Message-ID: <19980512192307.7346.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> Heyla all, I'm also sorta a Newbie, and I also want to know what all this is about sheep please... Just my opinion, of course. :) I could see Companions taking the form of house pets in a world with the same technology as ours. They would cetainly be less conspicuous than a large white horse walking down the street. On the other hand, maybe a world with our level of technology inhibits magic from flowing freely so that Companions would be rare or not exist at all. I've been thinking lately that introducing new technology at all is a mistake. Perhaps you could have an isolated "crazy" inventor come up with something new once in a while without upsetting the balance. However, I now think tech. should be introduced EXTREMELY slowly. There was one series where I thought technology and magic were woven together well. It was the Castle Perilous series by John DeChancie. I found Lord Incardine's computer intriguing. For those that haven't read the Castle perilous books his computer was described as something of a cross between Dr. Frankenstein's machine and equipment in a torture chamber. It was magically powered since electicity doesn't work reliably in Castle Perilous. > > From: Aramina2 > > wouldn't it be interesting if the mages > > could trap a few of the smaller ley lines in a globe that could be carried > > around with them? I believe our beloved Vanyel was the only mage that could muck about with heartstones by himself without the use of blood magic. IIRC the Hawkbrothers always worked with the heartstones in teams. If a team of mages worked on a portable heartstone, who would get to use it? Mages are not generally inclined to work on something together that would give only one of them an advantage. I have been reading Fantasy/Science Fiction since I was 12, and started reading Mercades Lackey when I was 14. (I'm the 15 and 1/2 year old). As a subject of discussion, there was recently results put out that reading Fantasy/Science Fiction books actually increased one's thinking and creative abilities, especially in adolesents and teenagers. A stated example went like this. Two children were tested at the same grade level (6th), both are the same age, both are female. One child read only Fantasy/Science Fiction books in class assignments, and one read a little of everything EXCEPT Fantasy/Science Fiction. There was no outside reading coaching or anything of the such. In one year, the girl who read only Fantasy/Science Fiction was at a grade 10 reading level, and was doing more creative projects of all subjects than the other child. The child reading no Fantasy/Science Fiction was at grade level 7. Interesting? From personal experiance, I am at a reading level roughly equal to that of someone Mastering in Literature at a University. Chance? Heather Heyla!!! Check out the newest RPG on the net!!! Partly for the reason already mentioned that it goes both ways and the two halves complete the whole, but also because the definition of a lifebond means that it is felt in some way by both individuals, whether they like it or not. A lifebond is not something that can be denied, and does not have to be a love bond. As Stef mentioned in SR (or was it SB?), a lifebond can exist with or without a lovebond because it basically exists to make up the faults in the two halves and make up a whole that is complete. I think it could be foresight because if you recall, Van had potential for mage gift and several other gifts, but they hadn't expressed themselves at a detecteble level. If I recall he tried to transfer the energy and node links of the K'Treva (? pardon if I get the clan name wrong) heartstone to his scrying stone, but Nyara shattered it at the last moment and created the maelstorm that sucked him and most of the contents of his workroom into the void. I believe he intended to create something similar to a heartstone, but would still have needed to create a ley line leading out of it and would have ended up with a very powerful node. I honestly don't know if it is possible to create a moveable power sink because you would always need that ley line siphoning off the energy that could not be contained or used, and that kind of lends to a stationary object. Heyla :-)

I think that to have a one-way lifebond like that would be impossible. Well, enough of that, on to other topics...

I don't think it is a Foresight. The dream is very different from the
one Vanyel has after his Gifts has been activated.
The only trhing in common is the ice, but in the fist case it seem to be
a symbol of Vanyel loneliness, in the second it is an element of the
landscape.

I think it could be foresight because if you recall, Van had potential for mage gift and several other gifts, but they hadn't expressed themselves at a detecteble level.  If I recall, foresight is not one of the most easily detecteble gifts, and if it only expressed itself when he had those dreams, it could have gone unnoticed.  At least that is the way I see it...

I agree you can't build a "traditional" heartstone and move it, but
I think you could create a stone to use a power sink. What I mean is
that instead of feeding the stone from the ley lines, you could use the
mage energy to build a store of power to be tapped when needed.

I am not sure how much power coul be accumulated this way. I think an
adept could channel a lot of energy, and  some stones could be passed
down within a mage school (just speculating).
Someone can tell me if the idea could work (or why it is not feasible)?
Didn't Falconsbane try something like that? It is a good idea though.

Anyway, I want to pose a question for a friend of mine who is
off-list. She is an expert seamstress, and a harper, and is curious as
to how people imagine the Free Bards' shoulder knots of colored ribbon
look. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for any help....
Has she taken a look at the knots used by the dragonriders and harpers of Pern?  The book they are in is the Dragonlovers Guide to Pern, and it might be a good place to start looking for ideas.  I would kind of imagine the Free Bards' knots as colorful versions of the Pernese knots.  Maybe even using a similar system to denote rank among the Free Bards' (if they actually have ranks).
