We hope that you’ll have lots of fun with us. Just jump right into whatever discussions you’d like, or lurk a while, and just listen in. Either way, know that you’re very welcome to be here! Before you get started, you should go to the Newbie Fest. This page will tell you everything you need to know about list guidelines, netiquette, and about some of the quirks of the list. It can be found at: http://www.ling.udel.edu/hyde/pers/misty/newbiefest.html If you would like an email copy of the Newbie Fest, let me know and I’ll get it to you ASAP. Also, you may be Mistyfied (sorry about that low-budget attempt at humor) by some of the abbreviations we use on the list, such as YKYRTMMLW. (I sure was when I was a newbie.) Never fear. You can find a list of all of the abbreviations you’ll ever see used on the list at: http://www.ling.udel.edu/hyde/pers/misty/abbrev.html Last but not least, if you need help with anything at all, feel free to contact any me or any other list member with "Councilor of Mist" in their sig. I'm Elsa. You'll probably be a bit confused by a lot of the stuff that goes on here at first, but eventually you'll get into the swing of things." She gives them all a conspiritorial wink. "In my experiance, it's best to just go with the flow....of course, I think I may have immediately started argueing, but that was the flow!" She points out to them the garden, the hottubs (public and private), the pillars, bushes, and trees, and the many people. "Don't be afraid to write "FLUFF", buit don't go overboard. A lot have people have complained lately. And remember, 'there is no one true way'." With that said, she summons all her energy and uses the monster-calling power bestowed on her by a kind listee to call her friend, Potato. (As opposed to shrillly whistling and shreiking his name) The huge green dragon lumbers out of the Mists, and doesn't even stop to let her jump up, just flips her on his back wit his nose. Elsa waves and calls good-bye before the pair disappear into the mists of "study". ~~~~END FLUFF~~~~ Elsa Dame in the Knighthood of the True Fiancee Wielder of the Frying Pan of Doom (tm) Knight of Fluff (YAYYY!!!!) If I recall he tried to transfer the energy and node links of the K'Treva (? pardon if I get the clan name wrong) heartstone to his scrying stone, but Nyara shattered it at the last moment and created the maelstorm that sucked him and most of the contents of his workroom into the void. I believe he intended to create something similar to a heartstone, but would still have needed to create a ley line leading out of it and would have ended up with a very powerful node. I honestly don't know if it is possible to create a moveable power sink because you would always need that ley line siphoning off the energy that could not be contained or used, and that kind of lends to a stationary object. It is a good idea though. >> I happen to be reading the Mage Winds series as we speak, and have been hesitant to de-lurk, for fear of re-starting yet another discussion on one of the "Done to Death" topics. First off, as merely correcting a factual error (not to point out a person's flaws, but as I said I'm reading them at the moment), but it was k'Sheyna's Heartstone that he wished to drain. And stupidity of all stupidity, the scrying stone was merely supposed to be a power pole. He felt that he could encompass the power of the heartstone within himself. I can't remember exactly if it was Falconsbane or Firesong who thought about how that much power would simply burn him up inside.....If it was Falconsbane that was why he needed the power pole.....I think I'm merely confusing myself. As for the "done to death" topic which I was going to mention. The issue of the vrondi and why they may or may not have bothered Keth and what borders they follow along. I am currently reading Winds of Fury and Vanyel explains the nature of the shields on Valdemar. Okay for those of you who have no idea what I am talking about this may seem slightly spoiler-esque, but it isn't really. His explanation is that the borders, according to the vrondi, follow where there are active, on-duty Heralds. I hope maybe this'll clarify some? There is a very good explanation of the whole vrondi/web-spell during that scene....WofFury, pg. 91 "The borders have changed since I set the spell, and so far as the vrondi are concerned, the "border" really ends where the presence of active, on-duty Heralds ends." BTW--for whomever asks, textevd=text evidence. Curious? See the last line of the preceding paragraph. The first problem is that this is only a single example, not enough evidence for a true study. (If they had done this with several hundred pairs of students, randomly selected across different age groups and so forth, it would hold more weight.) The second problem is that this evidence does not show a *causal* relationship. Just because the child who read f/sf was reading at a higher level doesn't mean that her f/sf reading *caused* this increase. It could be the case that her reading of f/sf was a side effect of her (unexplained) increased interest in reading and creative activities. Or it could be that the two aren't related at all, and her increased reading level is coincidental. Nelson Greenslade (grenslde-+AT+-nbnet.nb.ca) wrote: > One word: LEARETH!!!!!! Yes, I think movies would be a good idea if someone would do it RIGHT! But, as we have seen with many many other movie adaptions of book -- Hollywood doesn't believe in doing it right. So I think I will stick to watching my own imagination while reading -- its probably makes us happier in the end. > > Also what is every ones favorite book, human charecter, non-human > charecter, and part? > I like too many too well to answer this! My only real obmisty for this post has to do with the tech and magic discussion.  I think that it is possible for magic to coexist with technology because while tech may allow for things to be done more efficiently (in some cases), using stuff like a magical power source, etc. would help prevent some of the biggest problems we have today with the use of fossil feuls even though we have cleaner feuls available.  If I recall correctly, one of the Tarma and Kethry short stories covers this subject (misuse of the environment for profit).  For those who haven't read Oathblood, this is a **Spoiler** * * *SPOILER SPACE * * * Its the one where the tanner is poisoned because he objects to the methods of a fellow master tanner who is using a cheaper method to mass produce tanned hides.  She discusses what I take to be the overall views of her characters about using quantity of quality because you make more money, and gives some insight as to where Velgarth is as regards to the industrial revolution and 'environmental action'. * * *END OF SPOILER * * * Anyway, there is one author in particular that comes to mind when I think of tech and magic.  Her name is Patricia Kenneally-Morrison, and for those of you who love Arthuriana, she takes what I consider to be one of the most interesting interpretations of the Arthurian legend.  Her traditional characters (Arthur, Guenivere, Morgaine, Morgause, Merlin, etc.) keep a pretty "traditional" base as to how their stories start out, but from then on it gets really interesting.  There are two trilogies and they are part of the "Keltiad". now for some newbie fluff.  For those who aren't interested in reading fluff, you can stop reading here. **Fluff Zone** Seasong finishes grooming SnowFeather's coat and walks up to the confused newbies. "Blessings on you this day, and welcome to the mlml!! Here is a towel for those who haven't been Sploshed and an umbrella for those who have.
