However, I challenge anyone here to find someone, including myself, who isn't a bigot in regards to at least one or two groups. The important difference is: do we fight against that ugliness inside us or are we content to let it fester? The world will improve only when we try to erase our own bigotries - and when we can treat everyone decently. John E. Somehow, I don't feel as bad when I delete just the one digest message as when I have to delete ten or more emails that I just can't read becuase of lack of time. So anywho, I'm replying because: I saw something mentioned about copyrighting names of characters. This was a discussion I observed on the Orson Scott Card list I am on. Someone wanted to have "Ender" as his email name. Now, everyone said that because Ender is derived from Andrew, Card can't copyright it as his. However, it is offensive to us Card fans because Ender is "the" Card character everyone loves. (He's like Vanyel is for Mercedes Lackey fans -- only _everyone_ loves "Ender") It sounds like the name being used was a more quiet name, just a passing character. That shouldn't be as offensive. For instance, somone else uses "plikt" as their email name. Plikt was in the same series as Ender, but a minor character, so it does not bother us to have her use it. It is surprisingly common that two people coime up with he same name. It has ahppened to me once or twice. And these were completely made up names that nobody owuld use or would be common. And lots of people read a story and years later use a name because they have it deep in their memory and liked it. For instance, on the MisticCircle, my character goes by the nickname "Aya." To tell you the truth, I made up the whole character background and her name and nickname. Then I realized Aya sounded familiar as a name. It was familiar because Misty used it in one of her books. Now, perhaps upon realizing that, I should have changed the name. But I really liked it, so I kept it. As far as I know, it hasn't caused and problems on the Misticcircle. So, all in all, let people use their names. If the character is a big one inn a book, (someone decided to call themselves Vanyel on the list) then ask them politely to change their name because Vanyel is a beloved character and it doesn't feel right to have someone using his name. If the character is minor, it's not a big deal. I accept the challenge and point to myself as one who is not a bigot in any sense of the word. I do not hate anyone because of any particular trait, unless you want to count those that have lied to me, hurt me or someone I care about emotionally, as a trait. When I meet someone new, I have not found myself, at least not in the past several years, saying to myself "I don't know if I'm going to like this person because he/she is __________" I give everyone a chance on their own merit unless and until they prove that it was a wrong choice. But race, religion, sexual orientation, height, weight, financial backing, catlovers, doglovers, birdlovers... none of that matters to me. And some of these people may have traits/do things, that I don't agree with and would never find myself doing. But I don't think that they are inherently evil or bad people or are in any way inferior to me. They just choose to live in a way that I do not. And I honestly don't think that I am the only person with the view out there. Oh, I know they are few and far between, but I'm too much of an optimist to believe that I am the only one out there. >The important >difference is: do we fight against that ugliness inside us or are we content >to let it fester? The world will improve only when we try to erase our own >bigotries - and when we can treat everyone decently. Do you mean treat everyone decently always and for all time, or at the outset of meeting them? Because *always* treating everyone decently is impossible. I've made my point on my view of meeting people from the outset, but if I meet a girl/guy that, upon meeting my boyfriend, decides that he will be better of with them than he would be with me, and tries to take him from me in underhanded and devious ways, I will not treat that person decently. If someone I know has betrayed my trust repeatedly, I will not treat that person decently. If someone repeatedly puts me down, tries to ruin my self esteem, tries to convince me that I am less than they are simply because, I will not treat that person decently. At these points, these people have proven unworthy of the decent behavior I bestow upon those that have done me no wrong. It takes time for people to lose my trust and fall into the catagory of persona non grata, and it is not a permanant state. But to say that everyone should always be treated decently, no matter the person and the circumstances, forever and all time, is, IMHO, something that can never be. If I was wrong on your meaning, please feel free to completely ignore everything that I have said above, as I tried to explain what I meant so as not to cause any more contriversy than the board has already had. Just had to add my .02, and I hope I offended no one. Amber, often known as Stasia _____________________________________________________________________ "What is a friend? While I don't agree with curbing peoples right to discuss something on this list I think Ken is correct to call a halt here. People on both sides [probably myself included] have been getting off debate and into if not open hostility then back handed comments. This is a very contentious issue. For those of us who are gay/bi it is important to us that we have the same rights as str8 people. MANY people don't agree with that and as many people on this side of the debate said EVERYBODY IS ENTITLED TO THEIR OPINION. > So, this thread is now officially "persona > non grata" for the time being (think of it as a time out). If anyone wants to continue with this, be you gay, str8, bi, lesbian or indifferent then mail me with a title "homo debate" and I will try and put a private list together. Femmy I would welcome you to this list as our debate stayed on the polite agree to disagree level. This will be my last post to the list on this subject.
