I was considering opening up an ICQ chat room similar in nature to this list, where people could get together for realtime chat! If I do, I will not be able to handle the responsibility by myself. I would prefer that 2 or 3 other people help me out! This way, we could "meet" perhaps a couple of times a week, taking into account the different time zones and such that people are in! This would not be a MUSH, MOO, MUD, etc, just a place to hang and talk abt Misty stuff (tangents allowed!) If this sounds like a plan, let me know *privately* at thalionar-+AT+-geocities.com Oh, and if this is already occuring, somebody let me know how I can get in on it!!! OB Misty: Ummmmmm. Are there any pagans(Wiccan, Druid, Discordian, etc.)or for that matter, anyone, on this list who are upset by the Diana Tregarde series or the SERRAted Edge series? Just curious. Personaly I am a practitioner of Wicca and find little to be upset about. It presents witchcraft in a positive, if somewhat dramatic and flamboyant light. Please, no flames regarding my religion or that of others. Everyone is entitled to their own belief, and like homosexuality, it is unlikely that any amount of persuasion or threats of eternal damnation will change anyone's outlook on life! My last post seems to have slightly misinterpreted by some list-sibs.. If I wasn't quite clear.. I apologize..I only meant that something extremely terrible and personal had to happen to Van to break him...I never meant that the rape was "needed" to make him a stonger, better, or more resigned (etc.) person. It could have been something else. I just interpeted the rape as Van's breaking point, causing his Berserker-like behavior. In MHO, Van never did *rebuild, rebound or truly recover* from his experience. He just pulled himself together, finished what he had begun (before the rape) and surrendered himself to his fate. Again, I'm sorry if i didn't explain my view more clearly in my last post... Hence the need for the rape... me>The phrase "the need for rape" rings off all kinds of extreme warning me>bells in my head. I hope that you are not trying to imply that strength me>and purpose comes only after rape. No, no, no. I think they mean, 'The need for the rape to happen in the story.' Vanyel has grown so much, and is tough enough mentally when the rape occurs, that something as violent and shocking as the rape is necessary to break him, now. Earlier in his life, something lesser would have been sufficient; now it isn't. I think that is what Elizabeth was trying to say. I do the same sort of thing to my own characters. A conflict is only interesting if the obstacle is equal to the character's strength to overcome it. A weak obstacle doesn't test the character's mettle and therefore bores the reader. Too devastating an obstacle crushes the character and makes a reader pity him, rather than root for him. A writer has to know how to balance this and how to judge how much her characters can take. Powerful characters need powerful obstacles to overcome. It's not that anyone is claiming strength and purpose come only after rape. It's that this character is already strong enough to prevail, after a normal period of dealing with having been violated. Fictional characters' problems must always serve a dramatic purpose. Applying the standards of real-life to them won't work. The rape is a tool of the writer to challenge the character, period. Now, I can't remember _why_ Vanyel needed to be broken, but the above is my take on why the rape happened, from a writer's POV. me>ever person. Saying that Vanyel wouldn't have been able to save me>Valdemar had he not yet first been raped is a pretty vile statement, me>and I don't think anyone means this, but it's almost being implied. That I don't know; it's been ages since I read the books. me>Rape is far too often used in movies and other "entertainment" to shock me>the viewer. (Of course, this is usually raping of women.. according to me>Hollywood, men never get raped unless they're in prison and being me>treated like women) It seems lately whenever we see a woman being me>beat up or otherwise abused, the powers that be throw in a rape or two me>for good measure. The rape is rarely addressed except as just another me>violent scene, and the movie goes on. ::nods:: Reminds me of bodice-ripper romance novels from a decade or two ago, when Our Hero would rape Our Heroine, and it was seen as the first stage in their romantic relationship. Those writers, I suspect, had never spoken to a real rapist, ever. Real rapists are not the kind of guys who make great romance novel heroes. They're usually self-absrbed, angry, and often passive if unprovoked. (snip) me>wouldn't have been there otherwise. Could Vanyel have still managed to me>save the day had he not been raped? I hope the answer to that is fairly me>obvious. Rape is never necessary, but it's always shocking. In a piece of fiction, it can be vital. I have a character whose story could never have happened if his father had not been raped. But in real life, definitely, rape is _never_ necessary. As such, warnings about viruses however well-intentioned are not encouraged (read "are in fact discouraged"). There are a lot of hoaxes going around, and while I am not going to comment on the vailidity of that particular warning, we do not want every warning msg around to end up on the list. Specially not those warnings that say "please post this everywhere you can". If one of you feels you absolutely must, braid your warning along with some Misty content. Becoming his ice-dream, sort of. The rape shocked emotion back into him. I was actually a little scared of him until then.
