This time I did people maybe next time it will be scenes or places. Anyway I just bought two more Misties to add to my collection. Oathblood: Yeah! I love Tarma and Kethry It has been awhile since I read Oathbound and Oathbreakers but while reading Oathblood some of the stories sounded familiar, like I have read them before. Are some of them added into the other two? Turnabout and Keys were very familiar. I haven't read all of them yet. I have been skipping around. Not quite sure why. Mainly I wanted to read about Kethry's kids. BTW on one of my other lists we get kind of picky over book covers. On the cover of Oathblood, Jodi Lee gets T & K's eye color right. blue for Tarma, green for Kethry. But on Oathbound their eye color is switched and on Oathbreakers both of their eye's are blue. Other wise they have the same facial features from book to book. Is this just look that way on my copy or maybe their eye color has changed from book to book or maybe Jodi Lee made a mistake. I guess I wouldn't have thought all three would be different. But this is probably picky and only an observation. :) Sword of Ice: Yes! more Velgrath stories! Well I just bought the two books on thursday so I haven't read this one yet! But I will probably get to it before the weekend is over! :) Does anyone else out there like the little note before each of the short stories in Fiddler Fair, Oathblood, and Sword of Ice. I think they are great. Misty really didn't have to add them but they give a little more insight on the stories and Misty. This is also one of my observations. I guess I have been very observant lately! ;-) Well I didn't have much else to add. I haven't really been keeping track of the newbies lately. Would all of you please step forward. I would really like to know who is new to the list so in your next post could you add a line that says "Hey I am a newbie" somewhere. Can't welcome you if I don't know who you are. I realize this is a rather blunt statement but that is the >>general impression I have received. No one, straight, bi, gay, muslim, christian, jew, wichen, druid, has the right to impose their thier beliefs on others. If I disagree with another persons beliefs/morality then that is my opinion and as long as I do not attempt to impose them on another then I have a right to them. > >Now that I'm back from my short vacation, I'm free to comment. > > You've really missed the point. As I said earlier, this debate isn't >about homosexuality - it's about bigotry, period. It just so happens that homosexuals are a main focus for bigotry at the moment, and people feel completely justified in it. No one is asking you to believe that homosexuality is the one true way, only that it is the one, true way for some people, and that those people shouldn't have to suffer because you decide that it's the wrong way. By the way, homosexuality is neither a morality or a belief - it is a state of mind with strong genetic links. We're not talking about a fondness for the color blue or a love of country music, here. > You obviously missed my point. In fact you are proving my point. You have all but flat out called me a bigot to my face because I do not agree with your premise. The discussion I have seen to date has not been about anything but homosexuality and the "fact" that any person who feels homosexuality is not proper is a bigot and must change thier opinion for the good of "mankind" Do I feel homosexuality is wrong? Yes. Do I go out of my way to preach my opinion to others? No. Have I ever asked someone what their sexual orintation was, be it in a personal or business situation? No. Do I associate with homosexuals? Well it appears I at least do on the web. I recall that several people on this list stated they were gay. Did I run from the room shouting "unclean"? No. Did I formulate a black list so I knew who's posts not to read or reply to because I might become "tainted" by associating with them? No I'm still here and I am quite willing to "talk" to folks. You seem to forget that bigotry is not limited to one opinion. In real life I don't know if I associate with any homosexuals. It's not the first question I ask when I meet a new person. It's not a question I ask period. Why? Because I don't care!! Keep it out of my face and I'll keep out of yours. It's a very good philosophy as far as I am concerned. Nor have you shown or will you ever be able to show where my opinion concerning homosexuality has deprived someone of there rights. If by hurting you mean that someone may be caused mental distress because they know I disapprove of thier livestyle, that is not my problem. I am not in control of thier thought processes. The only way they would discover my opinion would be to ask it, or to bring up the subject in conversation, which is the same thing. I do not run around with a sign around my neck saying "I think homosexuality is wrong, you should change your life style" Nor do I care to have someone tell me that my opinion is wrong and I should change to agree with them -- which is exactly what you are doing. >>. I do not care if a person is black, white, brown, yellow, or green. If he/she treats me with respect then I will treat them with respect. >So, you just care if they are straight? Read the above, again. I DON"T GIVE A DAMN!!! What I do "give a damn" about is when someone decides that they are right and I am wrong and I must convert to thier way of thinking. Which is exactly what is being attempted here. >>I would be honored if Vanyel were a real person and he considered me a friend, at the same time I would still feel he is wrong in his choice of sexual partners. I WOULD NOT attempt to "convert" him, nor would I expect him to try and "convert" me. > >Well, there's another fundamental problem. You use the word "Convert" which reflects that somewhere, deep down, you think that gay people want to convert straight people. That is correct, it is not deep down it is right at the top. By convert I am saying that some gay people are attempting to "convert" my opinion. I feel homosexuality is improper, they wish me to accept it as proper. If I do this they will feel better because I have accepted their "gayness". It is not going to happen. Nor am I going to try and "convert" them to my opinion. This is nothing but a continual loop here. All I am seeing is that I MUST accept homosexuality per your way of thinking. You are constantly going over the same thing over and over again. I MUST chance so YOU feel good. It is not going to happen. >> Frankly the sexuality of Misty's books is not what I read them for. I >>enjoy them for the story. The interaction of characters. I do not see the sexuality of the characters to be the driving force behind the books. In a few occassions I felt it was either superfluous or has even gone so far as to have a negative effect on the storyline. You obviously feel otherwise which is your right and I have not interest in attempting to change your opinion as it is yours and you have every right to it. > >How can it have a negative effect upon the story unless you have a prejudice against homosexuals? I'm prejudice against homosexuals yet I would be honored to if Vanyal called me friend. Hmmm, something odd here. One of the definitions of Prejudice per the dictonary is - suspicion, intolerance or irrrational hatred of other races, creeds, regions, occupations. I guess you could call homosexuality a creed. Yet if I have this intolerance and irrational hatred of gays then why pray tell would I be honored to have Vanyal call me friend? If there is in fact any prejudice going on here I suggest that some gay folks look in a mirror as they seem to fit this difinition rather well. I found the rape of Vanyal a very negative point in the book and I can see no real justifacation for it other then shock value. That could have been handled with a torture seen or in some other manner. For that matter was it even neeeded at all as more then filler. The death of the old hedge wizard and the boy struck me as a waste and not needed what so ever. I do not care for any of Misty's rape scenes in her books, regardless of gender. > >Are STRAIGHT storylines ever disadvantageous to a novel? First of all who says a storyline needs sex to start with? And yes STRAIGHT storylines have superfluous sex in them too. > >I'm sorry if you think this reply was nitpicking, but I think its important >to point out all the little ways in which a person or group of people can be devalued and dismissed by others. > Frankly I considered it both nitpicking and highly offensive. You strike me as coming across with a "holier then thou" attitude. What I am getting from your reply is a. I have a wrong opinion concerning homosexuality. b. I am by my very thought processes, if not actions, either intentionally or subconsciously (how am I suppost to disprove his eh?) discrimitating against gays, thereby affecting thier lives in a negative manner. c. I must CONVERT opinion to where I accept gays as "normal" so that I no longer am causing them any harm by my WRONG feelings. d. Once I "understand" and accept homosexuality as "right" then bigotry (which I am also obviously guilty of even though I have never done anything to disrupt any gay persons life or lifestyle) will be reduced in the world there by everyone will be that much happier. Nor do I feel that I have devalued or dismissed anyone. If someone wants to take up housekeeping with a goat I don't care -- as long as they do not exept me to accept it and agree that that is correct. What one does in the privacy of thier own home is thier business. And before you jump on the privacy thing yes I DO object to excessive displays of affection by straights and gays in public. A kiss on the cheek, a pat on the butt fine. Exploratory surgery into each others mouths with tongues no! If someone wants to make out then do it in private. You have not budge one centimeter from your opinion nor have I. I repeat I am not attempting to convert you but it sure as heck looks like you're trying to convert me. >> It seems to me that this conversation has gone as far as it possibly can, and now its getting a bit on the nasty side. Everyone has their opinion, and they would love to think it is the absolute right one. I think this way myself pretty often, but as an apprentice shaman, I am not allowed in indulge. (Sigh.) I respect all of your opinions. They are interesting, and they make me think a bit. But I will continue to be as I am. As always.(Shrug) This has been an incrediably interesting topic, probably very interesting to any newbies who popped right into the middle of it, and I had abit of fun adding my thoughts, but maybe it should 'die' off. They are beautiful, and I stumbled upon them for the first time quite by accident. Everyone just kinda grabs a hold of a name which suits them. I have stuck with April because I am trying to find my shamanic name. It is alot harder than it sounds, trust me. Some of the names have a particular source, like a book character, and others are just personality things. Cymrey; <> I have to add another thought or two to this one. I don't think the rape was needed, as much as it served a purpose. It reminded the reader quite sharply of Vans humanity, and how strong the bond between Van and Stef was. I dont think Van would have pulled himself together as well or as fast if Stef hadn't been there. I don't think it was intended only to shock, but one cannot add rape without shocking. He probably could have saved Valdemar just as well had he not been violated. It was sort of a reality check. Van had been very hard, cold toward even Stef and 'Fandes, and after the rape, he was sort of the old Van again, a little more worn, but not emotionless as he had been. Again, I think it went to show Van was human. Chocolate, peanut butter filled sheep to all! (Yum!) April. Has anyone seen my pooka.... ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 1604 **********************************
