Otherwise, the ending of the book would have been very anti-climatic. BTW, I agree with the people that said it seems like Misty has a fixation on rape. I had to answer this one!

I thought it made us remember that he was, after all, a human.  We see
him cold, calculating, wanting revenge, gentle only with Stef, and even
with Stef on the journey he's cold towards him.
The rape makes us see that he's vunerable still, rather like 'Lendel was
when Gala repudiated him.
I saw it as an 'echo' through time sort of, 'Lendel was fixated on
revenge, and died, leaving his lifebonded to try and suicide, Van tries
the same, but Stef survives after Van orders him too (love that scene!)
It 'echoed' the first time Van lifebonded, but with Van as the Herald,
and it sort of reminded me that Stef WAS 'Lendel...

That probably makes /no/ sense whatsoever...

As far as it goes with making him want to kill his enemy even more, a rape would do that well. Also, I had thought that the men were ordered to do what they did to him, to try and break him before he made his way all the way to the mountains. I agree in some sense that there needn't have been a rape scene, but I don't think that the "old Van" would have returned to a conscious state from a mere slap from Stef telling him to wake up. I also agree with whoever it was that talked about anti-climax. At the end of this book, the readers (generally speaking) of the series don't truly recognize Van as the one that they have been following. Something needed to remind us that we were about to lose Vanyel, something to remind us of the frightened child that started the whole series off. Misty just decided to go with the rape *shrug*. --- As far as people receiving the replies to e-mails before they receive the original posts, I can only say that this is something that is common to the internet, unfortunately. Remember how how he reacted after the old man released him from his mind prison? And then after that, all the while that it took for him to somewhat get out of his traumatization with the kyrees (sp?). What surprised me is that he kept his cool during the battle between the mages at the end of the book. I would tend to think that a stress like that, after all of the other ones, would cause another snap. >>I don't think that the readers would lose sight of Van... the whole trilogy was named the "Last Herald-Mage" after all, and Savil already died. 'sides Van's the main character. who would lose him?<< I didn't mean that they would forget about him. What I meant was that they would temporarily forget about the way that he was (weak and insecure) and just think of him at the end of the book (during the battle and such) as the cold person that he was turning into. His healing time with Stef sort of brought him back into the world of caring, and let him out of that 'cold' cycle, imo. --- Question for someone who doesn't know much about horses. I had thought that the tail was just long hairs? If you cut it short, it doesn't bleed, does it? I know that Companions aren't truly horses, but they were close enough in form to fool the Ashkeverons. I know this one! *lecturer tone* Horses have bone running about a third to halfway down their tail, it's called the 'dock'. It has veins etc in... i.e. if it's cut, it will bleed. The hairs surround the dock. *Rainbow grins* I am incredibly bored... la la laaaa... *Thinks of an ObMisty...* Um... OK... If there were so many 'breeds' of Gryphons in Urtho's tower, how come we only hear about broad wings, Zhaneel's type and another type? Also who liked Vikteren and wanted to hear more about him? Also if Ma'ar had lots of very destructive technology, why doesn't Leareth or Falconsbane use it? If Ma'ar had weapons that only Urtho + co. knew about why doesn't he make them in future lives? Is that enough? P.S. who's got the ring at the mo? Can we do little bits of fluff? I miss the Halls... *sob sob* :-) Rainbow Unity! + Zhai'helleva! It's backbone finishes off at the tail head just like a dog or cat. It has bone and muscle, without it a horse wouldn't be a able to swish his tail at flies. It would lay there like the hair on it's head. I figured that they had to cut Yfandes tail right at her rump which means they cut off bone and muscle. That would definitely bleed. ---Paustinnew wrote: > > I'm curious as to why a human would want to come back as a horse. I for one would come back as a horse if I had to come back as an animal. But I am a little bias. I have may own horse. To me there is no other animal as graceful, intelligent or free spirited as a horse. And as for not wanting to eat grass or hay, well I can think of a whole lot of worse things that other animals eat. Coming back as a Companion would be even better. It would be like a super horse and you would still have your human reasoning and logic. But then I have loved horses since I was two. Wind to thy Wings & Chocolate sheep to thy mouth!
