Laura Hamilton's vampire series (kinda like the Di Tregarde stuff) Tanya Huff -- _Blood_ series, _Quarter_ series (Technically this goes: Sing the Four Quarters, Fifth Quarter, No Quarter. I never read Sing the Four Quarters -- the friend who recommended these to me said it wasn't as good as the other two, and primarily just sets up the framework, but you can piece it all together from Fifth Quarter.) Marion Zimmer Bradley -- Mists of Avalon especially, also Firebrand Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series Robert Asprin's Myth series and Phule series -- light and funny Janny Wurts Guy Gavriel Kay -- A Song for Arbonne may be the best book I ever read; The Summer Tree and The Lions of Al-Rassan aren't far behind; everything by him is excellent Terry Pratchett -- technically Discworld is a series, but can be read in any order; light and funny Robin McKinley -- sometimes in Young Adult, sometimes in Fantasy, always wonderful. The Hero and the Crown, The Blue Sword, Beauty, Rose Daughter especially great Peter Beagle -- The Last Unicorn, and anything else by him Jennifer Roberson Terry Brooks -- the first three Shannara books only (Sword, Elfstones, Wishsong) Elizabeth Moon -- The Deed of Paksennarion (sp?) trilogy David Eddings -- The Belgariad and Mallorean -------------------- "Thank you, Cailet, for this lovely gift. While purusing the "local" (40 miles one way) used book store in search of books/new authors to read I ran across one the LHM trilogy books. Fortunately I was able to find the other two on the same shelf. I have have a rule concerning books, if there is a sequel or sequels I must have them all before I will start to read them. Nothing I hate more then to really get into a story then find "to be continued in -----------" at the back of a book. The cover art was interesting so I picked them up. Once I started reading the first one I was hooked. Since then I've managed to wear out two SFBC hardbacks of LHM. It's been a while now since time I read it. Time to read it again. Take care. Silver Gryphon is a story about trying to get out of the shadow of great parents. You always here about some one who is a hero but never their kids because they couldn't out do their folks. They are all good but different and I think they could possible stand by themselves without being a trilogy. So I suggest you just read Black Gryphon and go from there. By the way mi'Lady Becky I would be most honored if you would accept me into the Ladies in Green. I prefer not to use weapons and find that words are a better weapon . I promise to do good with both words and magic. Will you have me Lady? Wind to thy Wings! Milk chocolate sheep to all! While I greatly laud and support this dedication to right, truth, justice, and the opportunity to wear really cool clothes, I realize that there are many of us in the lands of Mist who are by nature more peaceable, less trained in weaponry, or who simply don't look good in black. (It always makes me look sallow.) Therefore, I am hereby resurrecting the Ladies in Green! This once-thriving circle of ladies who tend to fight with words (or, sometimes, mage-powers) rather than weapons so assiduously pursued and assisted in the mage wars that they are now all off in distant lands, supporting the fight for justice against the evil Men in White. Truly adept Ladies in Green have been known to shrivel diehard Piers Anthony devotees with a mere glance. Should any of the ladies in mist-land wish to join, you will be most welcome. Should any of the gentlemen wish to assist us, you can either come in drag (only recommended if you look really fierce in a dress, and green is your color) or become a Champion for the Ladies in Green. (look 5!) ObMisty: (Sword of Ice SPOILER...Maybe....) Though this might incur the wrath of Vanyel lovers.....(hey, Vanyel is wonderful) I was wondering if anyone else was dissapointed with "Chance" in Sword of Ice? The story didn't seem to have much of a point to me....a romantic interlude does not a story make.....(it all seemed a little too convenient too....I don't know...Vanyel's clothes falling off like that and everything...) Is it just me who thinks this? (Time to drink my tea and crawl into bed...) Which books is Tannim in? Which CD of ML music should I start with? Is it sort of old-english/ celtic type music? ( sorry, got NO idea ) What are the main instruments used? ( hopefully not major synthesizer stuff ) What is a worba ( they sound wondeful!) and do they belong to one particular person on this list? If I want to avoid books with violent/unwanted sexual acts, which should I not read? Am I right in thinking there is a trilogy called oathbound, oathbreakers and oathblood, and what are they about? Are they short stories? RE: writing/ writers- I love doing critique work and writing... so if anyone needs editing-commenting help, just mail me :) also is there a list for writers and editors etc connected to this one? RE: Ladies in Green: I'm a new-ish'bie... um... well, I've got reddish brown hair so green works for me- can I join the order? ( if you'll have me )... must admit I like LARGE knives... but then just to intimidate with- hey it works... in the end also they're very good for thin slicing fruit which is how I like it... just gives a slightly different impression Well... I've been lurking....too busy with exams for ANYTHING: guess it might be about time to join in the list... I have no idea who Piers Anthony is- does that matter? RE: Silver Gryphon ( am I getting this braiding thing right? ) Well I liked it- I thought psychologically it was pretty interesting- it's also just a nice story... not my favourite, but it's fun and a good read. Black Gryphon was much more action filled... and I really did like it a lot... Skan just reminds me of SO many other macho, pompous men that I have to put up with. White Gryphon has some really good plot twists and really funny parts as well... ' I lost someone's.... LAUNDRY!' (sorry, couldn't help myself). Anyway, silver gryphon is not really necessary to the trilogy at all, butI think it's worth reading- and when you've read the other two it's quite nice to find out where the characters have ended up. I actually read silver gryphon first and enjoyed it and found it worked OK that way too... RE: Finding Misty: Well, actually it was through one of my very good friends that I met on another e-mail list. We'd been friends for a while and she'd mentioned this series of books- when we were talking about favourite writers- called LHM. I didn't really think about it for ages and then for Christmas... low and behold she sent me the trilogy- well it was a complete surprise but then I read Magic's Pawn and I loved it ( I haven't read the other two because i was really quite horrified to hear that there was a rape scene at the end of the book- I thought it must be a mistake! but it was there... so I haven't finished reading them yet.) But I've scoured all thelocal libraries for copies of the books and sent off to the states for the ones that I can't find that sounded most interesting. I'm actually not usually into fantasy or sci-fi at all... but i really loved the books I've read so far by ML. OTHER WRITERS: I'm going to see which of the books advised I can find and I'm really enjoying this thread. ( be warned these writers also do childrens stories- in fact some of the below are childrens stories... but only in as much as some of ML's is... they are just nice stories...- I haven't really read fantasy since I was much younger... until now. Anyway I think these are books for all ages...) Diana Wynne Jones- she reminds me of Mercedes Lackey Cart and Cwidder is rather like 'The Robin and The Kestrel' Howl's Moving Castle- yes it is a weird title Violet Needham ( long out of print but wonderful ) Ursula K Le Guin- Earthsea trilogy C.S Lewis- of course ( series including The Horse and His Boy) Susan Cooper- ( know this was mentioned a while back ) The Dark Is Rising ~~FLUFF~~ A very, very fat creature enters. Though it is the size of a dog, it _looks_ like a cat. It gives the list members a supercilious stares and procedes to delicately wash a striped paw. In fact the animal resembles a tiger, only a little smaller , with green-golden eyes, and larger black than orange-tan stripes. Finally the walking barrel judges that its sleek fur is now flat and shining more than usual and trots back off, soon to re-appear, trying to trip up a stranger, who it seems is only a little bigger ( and certainly narrower ) than the cat. In fact the stranger is fairly tiny, short and slight, but a dominant personality quickly dispells this first impression ( the LARGE, well sharpened knife in her belt also aids this ). The girl or rather young woman, has long brown-auburn hair which falls in natural ringlets about her face, tiny star-petalled, pink-white flowers nestle in the curls, rather as if they had fallen there. Large, humour-and-mischeif-filled eyes of deep velvet brown-black regard the courtyard, missing nothing. Ready to be sploshed and challenged by sheep of many colours and flavours, she stops with the cat twining about her legs. The cat stops twisting her long, black with silky red embroidery, skirt around her legs, for a moment and instead looks up at her and gives a drawn-out heartfelt and mournful cry. Bending down the girl sighs and picks up the huge cat, swinging it esily over one shoulder with one hand- a much practised maneurvre. The cat reaches up to touch noses with her and then settles purring like a thunder cloud, on her shoulder, watching her shadow, which isn't quite a shadow for it seems much taller, larger and to belong to a different person all together. " I present myself for splosing, if it is required. Sunshine and warmth to you all." ( cat essentials ) " The fat bag of over-stuffed fluff with the bright orange stomach, which he will happily display in return for attention, is Armalade, who isn't quite sure what he is, and I am Alexia," ( who is terribly and endlessly a writer-as seen from the short story size piece of fluff- you can guess what my books are like! ) " My apologies in advance to anyone who receives the glare from Armalade. He will only look at you like that if you do not give him your full and undivided attention. He will also try to eat everything... including all bugs... so the courtyard should be spider free from now on... though he's too fat to catch mice... I, in turn, apologise for my insanity and dementia. Consider yourselves as having been given decent warning." Well I think I'd better stop here... nice to meet you all.
