I just re-read SWarning, and at one point, Tremane's scholars report to him on the mage storms and their historical precedents. The only thing they can come up with is that, long ago, before the Empire began, the people who eventually founded the Empire served a great leader-mage, who lost everything to another. However, he intended his enemy's victory to be a hollow one, and therefore set off the Cataclysm. Now, I haven't read the Mage Wars yet, but based on the references in Storms this sounds Ma'ar-ish to me. But it is entirely likely that I could be wrong. Seasong wrote: Has it ever been decided if Elspeth and Darkwind are lifebonded or not? I ask because the channeling of power to each other that they do seems to me very like the way Vanyel was able to send energy to 'Lendel when he was building the gate. Hmmmm. This is a question that has never, I think, been truly settled to anyone's satisfaction. The channeling of energy doesn't make sufficient reason -- after Vanyel had mage-gift, he could meld energy like that with other mages, IIRC. What's-his-face, in MPromise, (the bad guy) was being supported and sent energy by his entire family. Leareth in MPrice was being supplied with energy by several Adepts who stayed away from the battle. In SWarning, when An'desha gets so jealous because of Firesong flirting with Darkwind, Elspeth tells him that she and Darkwind are "bonded," but she doesn't say what kind of bond. My inclination is to say that they're not lifebonded, because I feel like we would have been told if they were, especially in the Winds series, when Elspeth was so often the viewpoint character. I think if it were a lifebond, there would have been some mention made of it, somewhere, as such. But that's just MHO. The real reason for Tarma's low, gravelly voice: she's a man! 9. The first story in the collection is "Aliens Ate My Battlesteed" 8. The sudden, inexplicable preponderance of sheep. 7. Misty collaborated with Robert Jordan; each story is now 800 pages long. 6. Warrl gets fed up with adventuring and runs off with the next-door neighbor's poodle. 5. After being accidentally dropped down some stairs, Need gets confused and forces Kethry to come to the assistance and defense of any rats in danger. 4. The appearance of a new character, Daina Tragrede. 3. After being deliberately dropped down some stairs, Need gets really confused and begins compelling her bearer to perform the "I'm a Little Teapot" song and dance. 2. Between being Leareth and being Falconsbane, Ma'ar's spirit shows up as Thalkharsh, Raschar, Kethry's first husband, and Sven, founder of the Gray Clouds School for Mimes. 1. Tarma and Kethry originally met at the First Annual Velgarth-Wide Convention for Ass-Kicking Broads. I wouldn't like to be a character in a horror novel, so Stephen King and his colleagues are right out. I'd also hate to be a character in a children's book, since the characters in them are usually two-dimensional parodies of human beings. I like being a real person, thank you. I think I'd prefer to be a character in a science fiction story, because I'm too much a child of technology. I'd probably be bored to tears in most fantasy worlds, unless I were studying magic, but even then it would depend on whose idea of magic it is. Asimov would be good, I think, or Heinlein. Or maybe "cyberpunk", like Gibson. > Would it change if you knew you were a book character? How do you know you aren't one already? In roughly chronological order. Jean wrote (in a later confessed moment of weirdness) "...i just think that if women ruled the world, it'd be a lot better place. no wars, we'd just send really long, evil letters between each other...it'd be full of flowers, and slumber parties...oh, wow, it sounds like fun!! but, alas, the men are in control, and as long as they are, we're restricted to whatever we can get our hands on." A statement like that seems to be making a target of yourself, IMO. If being a feminist is wanting equal rights for women, I'm all for it. (A male feminist. Sounds kinda weird...) That's not equality you seem to be talking about, it'd just be switching the inequality. Who cares. I'm for it. Lets me out from being expected to be too responsible. It certainly wouldn't be any worse, and I always like breaking the status quo. Of course, I don't follow the opinion that it would be all sweetness and light, the main ones in charge would either be the feminazi power hungry types or the matriarchal motherly variety. In response to a slightly ludicrous post, "This just in. A recent presidential proposal has just been passed requiring everyone in the nation to eat their peas and brussels sprouts and go to bed no later than 9 o'clock. Thank you." OT:Deniz wrote "I'm obsessed with Callisto (the deliciously insane Goddess on Xena and Herc) but I know I'd never want to be near her in real life coz she'd fry me." Ah, good. Another fan out there. Xena is one of the few shows a week I actually watch. 4 hours of TV a week's a lot for me. But Callisto's just fun to watch. Not only is she extrordinarily cute =), but cheerful, self-possessed psychosis like that is really fun to watch, in a setting that's completely unrealistsic. In real life, I'd be running as if Bob, the omnicidal guinea pig was after me. On the charisma issue, I'm almost completely attracted to it as opposed to pure good looks. I think that for any length of time, if you're in touch with yourself at all, that almost anyone is. But I prefer athletes (female) to super-models any day of the week, so my opinion isn't from the normal standard, anyway. Cast another vote for the side that likes point of view switching. It makes me, who isn't too good with names, slow down and think about a book instead of tearing through it like usual. And is Misty's work going downhill? I haven't read much of the new stuff, no money to buy the books, and our library doesn't buy many new ones, but it'll probably start climbing again as soon as she gets some new inspiration. From the sounds of it, she's trying out different styles, getting tired of the old ones, and trying to find something that sparks her interest. I know I couldn't manage to write for a living without suffering severe creative burnout. On the issue of fan-fic, I've heard all the arguments, and still am quite irritated at her not allowing any to be published. Most of my other favorite authors have no problems at all, unless you try to make a profit. It's being done as a compliment. "Your world is so wonderful I want to live there myself" sort of thing. To name a few, Margaret Weis, Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett, don't care as long as it remains entirely for entertainment with no money exchanging hands, and they'd prefer not to see it to stop complaints of "You stole my idea", and even Anne McCaffery doesn't mind as long as her main characters are not used in the stories. So Misty's attitude on this point seems a little paranoid to me. She's at least as successful as any of those authors, and I doubt any of them will be lacking cash any time in the future. I hadn't known about Di dying (agh! Unintentional alliteration!). And remembering Talia's birthday sprang to mind instantly, but I couldn't exactly remember any others. Maybe birthdays aren't considered as important on Velgarth as they are here. As an aside, you rarely see a novel of a different world where the customs are more than slightly different than you see on earth, or would have seen if you lived in the time period. It can't be easy to write that, and it would no doubt take huge ammounts of explanation, but you'd think that it would crop up occasionally. Not radical, precisely, just really different would be nice to see on occasion. From Jean "New Vampire, (he came to me last night…and now I have these stupid puncture marks on my neck!!!)" I get those, too. Every 52 days. But s/he always bites me on the arm, and gives me cookies and punch afterward. "<> I know there's an example of that somewhere in Misty's work, but off the top of my head, I can't think of it." I think that Jadus, Talia's old, harp playing first friend, trained as a Bard, and then was chosen by his companion. Was that who you were thinking of? Also from typodragon, "In any case, everybody enjoy those pressure-cooker summer days. It's 85 degrees here by eight in the morning, and the fun's just starting. ;)" You poor thing. I'm lucky I live in S. Oregon. It hasn't gotten above 85 very often, and it still seems warm to me. And to the question currently making the rounds. I wouldn't want to be a character in a book, because every single one is under the direct control of the author. I happen to like my free will. Now, if I were to suddenly find myself in a world that correlated with a set of books, I'd love to be in Velgarth-on the condition that I get chosen. I dream far too often about being a Herald. I could go on for hours about it, and I seems to fit every characteristic for the job, except that I'm past the usual age to get Chosen by three or four years, but I'd just depress myself. I'd love to be in a situation where you are trained, required, and ABLE to help in a significant way, without putting up with enormous amounts of beaurocracy.
