Message-ID: <19980706093113.24125.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> Hello, i'm new. I enjoy reading fantasy stories... like Mercedes Lackey stories, David Eddings, Tamora Pierce and Piers Anthony, my favorites. I also seem to use the "three dots" a lot... Generally, i''m a boring person, totally mundane... (Hey, you there! WAKE UP! "zzzz") I absolutely lloovvee Vanyel, Savil, Tayledras HawkBrothers and the Shin'a'in, and my favorite Valdemar series is The Last Herald-mage. Now, for my welcome speech! "Blablabla, blabla, blablabla..." And in conclusion, I would just like to say "Zhai`Helleva" to the people who resisted the spell of boredom and read this. 'Twas terrific work. :) Royce and Tracy [happily married--to each other--for some years now, btw] aren't on the list anymore, but when I tracked him down, he replied the following: Thankyouverymuch! As I'm sure Jerrie has passed along to you, our stories are long out of print, but if someone needs copies, I can pass along photocopies of the original 'zines. The Totally Complete Works o' Royce and Tracy are as follows: "Herald's Blues" - Dugal finds that Whites fit better than blues. "Brother Love" - Kieth Windgaar avenges the death of his brother. "Family" - Dugal meets Kieth, and finds his Da isn't real thrilled about him becoming a Herald. "Haven" - Dugal and Kieth go back to Haven. Unfortunately Kieth suffers an attack of doubts, and Dugal an attack of runaway Gifts. And they both discover that females _are_ the more dangerous half of the human species. _The Sum of Duty_ - A one shot publication of two Dugal stories, "The Accounting" and "The Aftermath." In "The Accounting" Dugal goes over the border into Rethwellan, and finds himself at the mercy of a desperate and dangerous noble. "Aftermath" deals with the consequences of the previous story, as Dugal wrestles with his doubts, and his feelings towards one of his fellow Heralds. _Valdemarred_ - A completed, but never published novella. Dugal is on his way back to Haven after completing a routine Circuit. Unfortunately things become much less than routine after a strange lightning storm leaves him stranded in a parallel world that is a twisted mockery of his own. Note: "Haven", _The Sum of Duty_, and _Valdemarred_ should all be considered PG-13 for scenes of sex, violence, and implied torture. -Royce Day, AKA Herald-Accountant Dugal Andersonn ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Jul 1998 07:58:50 -0700 (PDT) From: cdelker-+AT+-earthlink.net To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Other Misty books Message-ID: <199807061458.HAA07047-+AT+-ireland.it.earthlink.net> I think I've read almost all of Mercedes' books. The ones I would recomend are as follows. Deffently 'The Lark & The Wren'. The story is one of my favorite books. I put it into a group of 'training' books. Where my favorite part of the story is the details and struggle of her going threw training. Just the daily routine of trying to live. (Not saying it doesn't have a story, but I like the depth to which certain stories cover things.) A book that it's simliuar to maybe... 'DragonSong' by Anne McCaffery. I also liked the book because there is parts that just make you feel good. (However I didn't like the rest of the series as much. I wanted to know more about the Lark & the Wren.) I believe Summon To Tourney was my favorite Urban Fantasy/serrated edge book. It's the one of Elves in L.A. Which is where I am from. So if your from the area or know the area, it's rather enjoyable, as Lackey throws in little bits that only those in the area might catch. (Which I'll tell of here, just for those who don't know.) The main one is that she has the elves at the Ren. Faire, which I actually work at. Well she has some details there, but the interesting thing I think is the Race Car Company that is suppose to be in the area is called Serria, which is the road one takes to go to Ren. Faire. I've looked, but haven't found a race car company in the fair area, but it's that extra hint of realiziam. The Diana Trengard series is okay. I've read all the problems Lackey has had with the series. (Mainly because people take the books to seriously, and believe that Lackey IS Diana Trengard and all that.) The Jinx high story is my choice for the one to start off with. Expecially if you don't know metaphysics (AKA. Magic). As for the collaberations. Elven Bane was very good. Borrow the book from the library. If you like the first chapter you'll injoy the book, if you don't, do bother reading more then. (However I didn't like Elven blood as much.) Ship Who Searched. I liked this one as well. However I did get sick of the whole series of the Ship Who. The rest of the series is writen by other authors, so it's a way to start with a familur author and then read other authers basing on the same universe. (Ship who Sang by Anne McCaffery is wonderful, however I hated The City Who Fought.) I was VERY disappointed by the ending. It seemed as if they were reaching the end of the number of pages they were supposed to write and just tied it all off. Anyone else feel that way? I also hated that Ysane died!! Does anyone know if Vanyelcould whistle? Or Firesong? I don't remember any of them whistling, but music was an important part of Darwind and Elspeth's music. They meshed her music and his dancing together. anyone else found the ending of Elvenblood to be very unsatisfying. Yes. Alot like Rediscovery. It just seemed as if they were building some great storylines and them didn't let them develop. Maybe someone was afraid of becoming Wheel of Time-ish? Actually, the organization is called SERRA, for South Eastern Road Racing Association (I think). It isn't really a company, just a group that exists for competition, like the NBA or the NFL (basketball and football leagues, respectively, for non-Yanks). The company is Fairgrove. But I like the bit about the road to Ren Faire being called Serria. Yay! The modem is working again! Too bad I couldn't read all 423 messages that were waiting for me! I sorta glanced over a bunch, and then deleted the rest, so sorry if I'm a bit out of it. Long, long, ago (in a galaxy not so far away) The Fishers asked about the Maryland Renaissace Festival. I've gone there for many years, and had a great time. If you have any questions, just ask! Oh, and if you go, don't miss Hack&Slash! Not so long ago, people were griping about Elvenbane's sequel, Elvenblood. And NO, my name does not have anything to do with the main character in those books. Anyway, I loved the first one, was sort of dissapointed by the third, but still believe that everything will be resolved in a final book. There has to be a final book. THERE MUST BE A FINAL BOOK!!! (whew) Sorry, sorry, just needed to get that out of my system! To comment on another conversation, I loved the Ship Who Searched, As well as the City Who Fought, but aside from that, I didn't really like the Ship Who... series. Okay, so I'm going out of town on Saturday for a month (I think I'm gonna have to unsubscribe that morning... :( sniff) what do I take to read? I was thinking about starting some series' that I had never read before. Any suggestions (If so, please give me the title of the first book)? Also, does anyone know what the first Pern book is called? How about the first Darkover book, assuming that series HAS to be read in order. Will someone please let me know? Thanx in advance. I walk into my favorite public library to try and find some SERRAted Edge and Di Tregarde books (I've never read either series), and I look on the shelf, and none are there! Okay, I say to myself, someone else just had the same idea and checked them out already. But then I notice that there are very few Misty books on the shelf at all! Again, I assume that someones checked them all out. On my way to the checkout line, I pass the Childrens/Young Adults SF section. There they are! Some of my favorite books in the world (the Velgarth books) have been taken out of the adult section! I asked the librarian what that was about, but she said she didn't know. Hmm. Color me confused! My choice of author's tie between one of Anne McCaffrey's world's (either a brawn, a dragonrider, or a healer), and Misty's Velgarth (probably a Hawkbrother Healer-Adept). The WitchWorld would not be to bad either, though I wouldn't want to be from Karsten or a Hound. Two author's whose character I would not want to be are Janny Wurts or Michelle West. They are both very good writers, but their characters always seem to have to go through some serious heartache (i.e. Hunter's Death or Stormwarden). As for characters who knew they were, whoever mentioned "The Neverending Story", the boy started out reading the book, entered Fantasia and then saw himself reading the book through the mirror at the Oracle. The whole idea was that Fantasia only exists due to our imagination, so he was both reading and writing the story at the same time. ******************************************************************************* Elspeth and Darkwind - Now that I think on it some more, I recall that when Firesong was lamenting not having a lifebonded, he brooded over those who had lifebonds. King Valdemar asked for help to all the goods he knew, but it seemed to me that some of the forces working against Evil (the Guardian Spirits) choose to associate themselves with Valdemarans. One thing that seem to support this is the reactions of all mages that recognize Companions as something different from horses. They see that Companions do not belong to this plane of existence, but they don't classify them as "divine messengers". I think that the Choosing is closer to a deliberate life-bond, that is impossible to break once established and must be accepted (even at unconscious level) by both parties. A this point, I think I will throw a stone in the pond and see what happen: Do you think there could be a life-bond where the parts are not in love? >From the descriptions, a life-bond is a kind of empathic link, but I am not sure this is the same as being in love Opinions? I am still looking for him, somewhere in cyberspace As a last point, about the Van mythos. I think that the archetype of "sacrificed hero" is one of the things that make Van the most popular character in all the Velgarth series. Most of the "complaints" I have heard/read about other characters is that they did not suffer o sacrificed enough. This is the MAIN reason I would not like to be a character in any book I really love. Most of them have tragic heroes, and the logical setting for tragic heroes are messed up situations, like wars, end-of-the world scenarios and other assorted dangers.
