First of all I'd like to thank Seasong for the towel (it did rain here), and the ring. Thanks also to Karen (for writing), Kiarrith, Catling, MUSE, KiT, Kat, Elijaran, and Bai Kai Ling. It was really interesting. Then I would like to say hello to my fellow listsibs who are also new to the list. Heyla! to May/Starwolf/Skysong (whichever you prefer) and Brynn. Lastly, I have a question: In the magewars, Ma'ar had a lot of mercenary troops. Well, how did Ma'ar come to his power? I have read the magewars, but I don't have a personal copy so I really don't remember. Thanks, wind to thy wings! I believe the Pendragon books by Stephen R. Lawhead features Merlin (or Myrddin) as an eternal youth (always looks about 30 something). And the book by Nancy MacKenzie (sp?) -- The Child Queen and The High Queen, shows Merlyn as a young man, only growing "old" cos he was poisoned by someone... Morgaine? I can't remember. It's been six months! If I remember correctly, MZB said something like that too. So far, the Stephen R. Lawhead books are the greatest. Myrddin is the narrator of the story. Unfortunately, the books are also severely...independant. Lancelot dies defending the queen, they were never lovers. Myrddin also happens to be a King, and a Prince from Atlantis.. .so.... ;) sorry if i was not much help. No, no, no! The Shannara books are wonderful! Well, the first one is. The second and third are merely good. The ones after that.... don't bother. The Sword of Shannara, book one, is marvelous. Slightly slow beginning, but only slightly. Once it gets going, it REALLY gets going. The Eye of the World (by Jordan, and, IMHO, his best book) reminded me of it, but Sword has much better battle scenes. Definitely give this one a try. Preordained" Choosing is exactly what it says: choice. In Magic's Price, Yfandes tells Vanyel that she knew when she chose him that she would die but did it anyway. She didn't have to, but she wanted to. Of course, if the powers that be knew that she would, then you can call it preordained, but the fact remains that she essentially had free will. Refering to Raven's question about Ma'ar coming to power: it says in the Storms (I think that Silverfox says it when he's giving Firesong therapy--or maybe An'desha said it...) that he was a tribal shaman or mage and he became their leader. He originally inteneded to consolidate the tribes to protect them from outside inveaders, but as we all know, he became a power hungry madman, by the time he was Leareth and Falconsbane. Also note that he originally justified ALL of his atrocities by telling himself that they were for the protection of his people. His people loved him, and he was a relatively good leader. And now for Merlyn: I don't have much to say (its all goin to be said) so I'll keep it short. In The Once and Future King by T H White, Merlyn gets younger as time progresses. I think he's living backwards. In M. Z. Bradley's The Mists of Avalon, "Merlin" is a title for the leader of the Druids, not a person, and there are more than one in the course of the book (two or three...I don't remember). It starts with Merlin as a 6-year old boy living in his grandfather's household and goes all the way to the old man part. They're really good books. The first one is called The Crystal Cave, the second one is The Hollow Hills, and the third one is The Last Enchantment. They don't stay exactly to legend. Mary Stewart tried to write them how she thinks they would have really happened and there's appendixes in the back with background on the legend and the history of the time if you like that kind of stuff. Ob-Misty: Has anyone ever really looked at the timelines in the front of the books? I think there's something funny about the years at the time of Vows and Honor. Tarma and Kethry start their work during the reigns of Arden and Leesa, but they're both still around during selenay's reign. (Remember, it was after Thanel was killed that Tarma sent Daren home, so she was still teaching at that point.) Anyway, if I did the math right, that makes Tarma and Kethry over a hundred years old. It's the second book of the second sub-series, which makes it fifth overall. I really liked that book. (... mild spoilers ...) This also ties in with another thread on this list about Christ figures: one of the main characters in this book is clearly based on Christ, and another Judas, and if you've read the Christian "gospel" you'll recognize the main theme once you get to the end of the book. (... end spoilers ...) ObMisty: I don't see Vanyel as a Christ figure at all. It just doesn't fit. I can *almost* buy Lancelot, but it's a stretch. OK, there are prolly people on the list who are better suited to answer this but in order to have a Herald persona pertaining to Misty's world you need to contact Queen's Own and go through some process of creating the persona and having it "approved". The same applies for any persona based on Misty's world, such as bards and healers and hawkbrothers, IIRC. I know some listsibs here are members of Queen's Own, so perhaps one of you could provide the info? Something else I have been meaning to post to the list: there have been some new additions to the Council of Mist, so I thought I'd add the updated list so that everyone knows who the Council members are so that you can email us if you need help, have problems, etc. If you want the general information on what the Council of Mist does, the explanation can be found on the Newbie Fest at: http://www.ling.udel.edu/hyde/pers/misty/newbiefest.html For those newbies who have not announced themselves on list, the above link contains information that we strongly believe will help you fit in and better enjoy the list (not to mention help you stay out of trouble ). Hmmm...ok, on the companion's preordained choices or not... What about Alberich's choosing? I have not read that short story for a long time, but the poor companion appears behind Karsite lines to choose Alberich, whom we all know becomes instrumental in Valdemar's defense. This isn't meant as an insult, so don't take offense.....but I can tell you probably aren't majoring in Literature or Psychology. Anyway, haven't you ever noticed that everything that teachers tell you about hidden meanings isn't intentional? It's all based on the Jungian theory about the collective subconscious. The theory is that we have have these racial memories, and archetypes (ie Christ and Lancelot) stuck in there, and writers remember that stuff. When you write, everything you've ever read or heard or saw is influencing you, so if you were really affected by a myth, you might put a little of it into the story unconsciously. It happens, trust me. And a lot of it is coincidence too. But you can't deny that it is there. About Tarma and Kethry not dynig: Karal met Tarma, as a Veiled One. She died. And Kethry was OLD when Karowyn was around...arthritis and all. Tarma had it too for that matter. I think that people live longer because they are healthier.
