Message-ID: Heyla, y'all! With regards to T&K's long lifetimes, well, Misty doesn't say *precisely* when they die, or in what order, but during BTS, when Kero's talking to Eldan just before the battle where Daren meets Selenay, she definitely refers to the pair in *past* tense, with regards to how they were plagued by minstrels during their lives. In addition, one of the kal'enedral (sp?) Elspeth meets later on in *her* story cycle refers to the ex-Brat as 'student of my student' - which identifies that particular spirit warrior as Tarma. As to their ages when they died, they probably *were* around a hundred or so. In other Velgarthan stories, Misty comes out and says that magic can have the effect of extending a magic-user's life, and implies that Need's long association with Kethry kept our favorite green-eyed mage in much better physical shape than might have been otherwise expected. Need didn't obviate the effects of old age, but seemed to moderate the symptoms. So I wasn't surprised that our gleesome threesome managed to get rather long in the tooth before passing over. IIRC, and please correct me if I'm wrong, didn't Warrl think he'd get taken by the Star-Eyed when She took Tarma? Does anyone think that there's also a kal'enedral kyree running around, poking his cold nose into whatever he can? I'll try to cut down.) Taliesin had lived before, yes. But so had most of the other people in Mists. (Igraine's dream-vision of knowing Uther on Atlantis, etc.) "The Merlin" was the title given to the man who led the Druids and was an equal of the Lady of the Lake, and generally an advisor to the King. (Somewhat like Monarch's Own, actually... okay, that's a pathetic attempt at an ObMisty, but I had to try.) Remember, after Taliesin died, Kevin became the Merlin of All Britain. ObMisty: Yes, I do have one. There's definitely a whole lot of reincarnation in Misty's books, esp. Velgarth series. By the third section, Kerowyn's a captain with years of experience. It's clearly been at least two decades since her training with Tarma. 20 years is a long time, plenty of time for these ladies to die with quiet dignity offstage somewhere and for Kerowyn to have gotten on with her life. Tarma and Kethry are such great characters, it's only natural that Misty wouldn't want to dwell too much on their deaths, especially when she had so much else going on in the main storyline of BTS. Most Heralds get to come back as Heralds or Companions, or rest in the Havens. He got the Sorrows thing because there was still work to do, and being a Herald, he couldn't say no. Florian came back as a Herald (presumably), and one of the Companions mentions "how many times you've been around". This is cryptic, but I think it referrs to how many times you've been a Herald or Companion. I'd like to add a theory: in the begginning, there were only grove born, but eventually there were others born naturally. Perhaps because by that point there were Heralds that had died and they no longer needed them all to be Grove-born? And as for the Companions repudiating Heralds, I suspect that the Arrows were referring to Vanyel. After all, how many times will the gods make the same mistake? It was not like he was moving around >and happened to choose him? It looks like he knew somehow that a certain >karsite needed to be chosen.... > Ooh, ooh, one I can answer (finally). Misty wrote "Stolen Silver" (the first short story) in the compilation called _Horse Fantastic_. "Silver" was a "gift" from the Voice when Alberich reached the rank of Captain at a young age in Karse. Supposedly he had been selected from a line of horses "liberated" from the enemies. Alberich thinks some thoughts to himself about the unlucky color of his horse and how like the witch-horses from Valdemar he looked. Alberich was rising fast in the line of military because he could see what was going to happen in the future, so he acted on it and planned for it. After saving a village, a Voice comes and removes Alberich's Captaincy and demands his death. The ending only explains that somehow, the Companion insinuated himself across the border. Probably a mental nudge here and there landed "Silver" in the right hands. :) Also, I must apologize if my message is in HTML. I've been trying for months to fix it. People are no longer complaining of it on other lists, but this one still seems to get funky stuff with my messages. Both Vitkeren and Urtho allowed themselves fun moments, even though war was going on. This might also meant that they were more imaginative, rather than more powerful. If you recall, in one of the later books (I believe a winds one), it was mentioned that one of the best mages that the character knew wasn't the strongest, but the one that knew how to use his spells the most efficiently. Perhaps when the war was over (speaking of Vikteren here), those that knew how to handle magic better were given the upper hand. As we find out in the Storm series, the mage-storm affects the minds of those who can use magical energy. Perhaps the original storm had affects that were similar. --- Question for any who may be interested. Let's say that a Herald (or Companion) dies, and decides to go on to the Havens and take their little siesta. In your opinion, would they want to be reborn, and what happens after that? We know that a certain magess is reincarnated as a Companion several hundreds of years later. Perhaps she took a rest, and then came back? --- Rhiannon wrote: >>in the begginning, there were only grove born, but eventually there were others born naturally. Perhaps because by that point there were Heralds that had died and they no longer needed them all to be Grove-born?<< IMO, you're on the right track, but not quite there. We're told that GB are ~quite~ fertile (as evidenced to Skif's surprise). Perhaps at first, you needed some GB to begin with (like Adam and Eve), but then they had fun and made their own children. Say that it takes about 15 yrs (guessing, since I don't recall right now) for a Companion to become of age to Choose. In that case, you have 15 yrs since the first GB appeared (no one says that they were all male). In that time, more people are able to become Heralds than there is a supply of Companions, so a few more GB's pop out into the Grove. Soon, there is a healthy balance, and the supply of Earth (well, Velgarth)-born is established enough to support the demand of Heralds. Question. Do you suppose that during those first few years there was a prejudice against VB as being inferior to GB (in the people's eyes), as was the case with Gifted and non-Gifted Heralds after Van died? I wasn't asking *about* the Ren Fest... I've been going to it since it was a tiny little thing in Columbia, and I worked it for three years a while back. Yes, Hack&Slash are really cool. (Do you know they live in a converted school bus?) Any-hoo, I was asking if anyone else from the list was going, and if they wanted to meet up there? A bunch of us from Queen's Own did that one year, and it was a lot of fun... impromptu filk-sings and all that... For all the newbies who missed the first post, we're talking about the Maryland Renaissance Festival in Crownsville. (East Coast United States) I think it's the biggest one on the east coast, so a lot of people come from all over. Speaking of Ren Fest, I just re-read Knight of Ghosts and Shadows, and Summoned to Tourney. Probably my two favorite non-Velgarth, Misty books. I highly recommend them to anyone who hasn't read them yet! (I wish I could join the Kory, Beth, and Eric Mutual Appreciation Society, but I hear it's kind-of exclusive! hee, hee) o.b. Misty: Did anyone else notice the discrepancy in Beth's *real* name, and nick-name between the two books? textev: KoGaS pg 336: (after the battle and the moving of the nexus, a police officer asks) "You're Eliza Kentraine?" "Yes" Beth replied carefully, "But..." (he then proceeds to read her her rights) Eliza seems to imply that Beth is short for Elizabeth, but... StT pg 78: "What's you're friend's name?" she asked, consulting a printed list. Now he was getting somewhere. "Beth. Bethany Margaret Kentraine." Neither book mentions the usage of an alias in those situations; though, when they were hiding from the Feds later she used Janice Lynn as an alias. Also, she was affectionately referred to as "Bethie" in the first book, and "Bethy" in the second. So was it Elizabeth/Bethie or Bethany/Bethy? Maybe Misty and Ellen had a slight communication problem on that, or they just forgot by the time they wrote the second book. :) To add to the confusion, the Healer's name was Elizabet, though she was referred to as Elizabeth at one point. I think, perhaps, *that* may have just been a typo! Okay, that's enough anal-retentiveness for tonight! I've been lurking lately because I was house-sitting, and only had time to swing by and read my messages. I'll have to do a longer braid later (if the threads are still there!) and maybe a wee bit 'o fluff! :No, no! Anything but that!: How about if I just tell you all about *my* sheep-dream? :Good-night, everybody...: Now, this was many years ago, but I still remember it... It took place on the Starship Enterprise (tm) TNG, and it was kind-of like the tribble episode, but with sheep. Except they could float, and transmigrate, dissapearing, and reappearing further away. It really drove Worf crazy, because they couldn't catch them, and not even a containment field worked. He finally got so mad, he declared them a security hazard, and was just going to beam them all out into space, when I woke up! Okay, I know it's weird, but it was no worse than the one about sitting in a tub full of water, completely clothed, with David Ducoveny, watching old film reels of Mr Magoo cartoons. I really should watch what I eat before bedtime... :No comment!: hee, hee! Wind to thy wings, Dester'tale the windborn hawk, her lovely if sarcastic Companion Khamsin, and Bob the wonder-horse! Has that changed? What is each person above "in charge of?" OK, let me explain a bit. We are each of us in charge of a day a week, and during that day we greet newbies who announce themselves, deal with netiquette problems and so on and so forth. However, there are certain topics that one of us has researched more than the rest, so in general, for example, when it comes to a copyright issue, Cen is the one to handle it, and usually does so on the list, since it is the kind of subject that needs to be made clear to everyone (since being Mel's guests we want to do our best not to jeopardise her business). > As I recall, Cennydd was in charge of keeping general order (and flaming >on occaision), someone else was the official wecomer, and I can't remember >the rest. Well, Cen was originally (before the Council was formed) the one who took care of netiquette in general, by using his wonderful patented semihumorous "flames". But these days, welcoming and and netiquette in general and such are shared among the council members. However, from time to time, we still ask the mage (or he volunteers) to initiate another listsib into the "Drifting Ashes". >Also, since I have been on this list, there have been several >changes to the list of Councilors. How does one become a Councilor? I'm >not interested, I'm just curious. OK, originally, the Council was kind of an idea that took shape on IRC, in order to help Auntie Mel deal with netiquette on the list, and the original members were people who had basically been doing that kind of stuff on their own. These days, the council invites new members when others leave/become swamped/ask for leave, and the general idea is the same. But, with the > exception of Tylendel/Stefen, do we ever see reincarnation as humans? Or > does reincarnation always mean coming back as an animal-shaped Guardian > Spirit? Ok, I was just recently reading the part of "Winds of Fury" where Elspeth and Co. are gated to the Forest of Sorrows by Van. Stef takes Skif and Nyara off to talk. Skif and Stefen are talking and it says...('he' being Skif) "For that matter, there was also a feeling of familiarity about Stefen, as if he and the Bard had been old friends of the kind that can say anything to each other, and forgive anything...." This made me think...could Skif be the reincarnation of Medren, Van's nephew? Then I decided that I was just seeing things that weren't there and decided not to mention it, until now.... What do you all think? Am I crazy? Btw, that passage is from pg 120 of the paperback version. -- Skirzar ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 1647 **********************************
