Soon, there is a healthy balance, and the supply of Earth (well, Velgarth)-born is established enough to support the demand of Heralds. > Question. Do you suppose that during those first few years there was a prejudice against VB as being inferior to GB (in the people's eyes), as was the case with Gifted and non-Gifted Heralds after Van died? ~~~~~~~~ Well in my opinion there would have been some predjudicial thoughts about the GB and VB companians. The reason I think this is because Misty tries very hard to remind us that Heralds are only human. Just because their jobs demand a certain quality from each of them they are still PEOPLE. But, it seems to me that as time went on there was less prejudice for Grove Born companions because the VBorn ones would have more experience and therefore be better. I am not saying that this was a conscience shift in opinion. I am just saying that over time as GB lessened and people relied more and more on their re-incarnated companions attitudes changed. And I have a question myself. Maybe I missed it but does Firesong's firebird ever set anything on fire when she is upset? I was just reading a T&K short story and a shaman is killed because firebirds electrocuted him to death. All I can remember about Firesong's bird was that it was unusual to have one as a bond bird and that she was very beautiful --- not scary?? For example, I have taken responsibility for fielding copyright related issues. I am not, for example, the official "flamer" ("Don't even go there, Miss Thing! I'm not a flamer, I'm just colorful! *snap*"). I just happen to be the one that has been chosen to induct people into the Drifting Ashes club. =) Generally, each Councilor "stands watch" one day a week and deals with general issues that arise on their day: greeting new members, reminding people to snip and/or braid, asking people to tone down conversations that are getting acrimonious, etc. Occasionally, if one Councilor feels that another member of the Council would be better able to deal with the issue, they will ask for help (for example, if a Councilor feels they are losing their temper, they might ask another Councilor to deal with the issue in question, rather than say something harsh that they might regret). We also try to have one Councilor who "floats" (doesn't have a specific day) to take up the slack when someone needs a break or has to go off-duty for a while. > Also, since I have been on this list, there have been several changes to > the list of Councilors. How does one become a Councilor? I'm not > interested, I'm just curious. Basically, membership is by invitation. When someone leaves the Council, the remaining members discuss who they think would make a good addition (usually based on criteria such as how helpful they already are on the list, how even-tempered and friendly they are, what kind of commitment they seem to have made to the list, do they respect Mel and the rules on the list, etc.) All the Council members discuss the candidates and then vote on who should be invited. Finally, the invitees are approached and invited and, if they accept, are paired up with a mentor and trained. Finally, they are assigned a watch. I haven't responded to anything on the list in ages! Last month I was on vacation for a week, and when I got back I had 143 messages to read! I know, I should have just skimmed through all of them, but I can't bear to leave anything unread! So it took me a loooooong time to get through all that. But now that I have some free time again, I can finally respond to some stuff. I'm sorry if some of it is a little outdated. First of all, there was some talk of birthdays and their significance in Valdemar. I still haven't read the whole Arrows series, but in Owlflight (p. 64 in the hardcover) there is a reference to birthdays: "The most coveted item among the village children at the moment was a tooled leather vest like Darian wore; that was what virtually all of them, of both sexes, had requested as birthing-day presents." So at least the people of Errold's Grove in northwest Valdemar do celebrate birthdays. Also in Owlflight (p. 208), Snowfire lists the choices that a Herald has when he or she dies (Yes, I love textevd!): "One is that he may return as a Herald- to-be, the second that he return as a Companion, and the third is that he may have some time in a place where all his desires are granted." I was wondering: does this apply to non-Heralds too? Snowfire seemed to think it does, but I don't know if he's a completely reliable source since he's a Hawkbrother and not a Valdemaran. Non-Misty stuff: A while back Skywolf asked for anime recommendations. Personally, I really like the Ruin Explorers series. It's funny, and I like the main characters a lot. If you want to, you can get some info about it here: http://www2.hawaii.edu/~bcheng/FI/fi.html Okay, that's all I have time for now. Coming soon: Some long-overdue fluff! Who knows? < I didn't mean to step on anyone's toes especially since I am a christian.>> Why is it that people think I'm offended when I'm not? I'm not, btw. I wasn't even offended when I was fla-- er, inducted into the Order of Drifting Ashes. I was pzzled by the "you've been warned numerous times" thing, because I guess I didn't pick up on that. Guys, if you're trying to get the message across to me in particular, you can't afford to be subtle. I'm a little slow on the uptake with that sort of thing. You'd think I'd notice, since I'm so paranoid, but nope. I mean seriously slow. People have to explain jokes to me, or I won't get the punchline for like 10 minutes. I'll shut up now. <> *bangs head against keyboard* hnbgyyhuj Please use spoiler spaces or give a warning in your subject line (for example "Rediscovery(SPOILER!!!)") that you are going to be talking about the content and/or ending of any given book other than those you've seen freely discussed on list. << Two words. Tad Williams. Very good. Take slowly. Enjoy much. Book title: The Dragonbone Chair.>> I probably should have read that first, instead of starting with Green Angel Tower. Where were you three years ago? I still haven't finished it!! <> It took him like three days to bring Talia back. And I remember someone saying had searched in different directions, so that indicates that he DIDN'T head straight for Talia. <> *confused silence, then:* I thought that was Need. In fact, in one of the mage storm books, it gives the name of Vkandis's consort, and I think it's really similar to Kal'en'el(sp?) >Would that mean that the Star-eyed-One's male counterpart is Vkandis? >Zhai'helleva >Becky > Well, you're right. In Storm Warning, Karal is thinking about the two, and I noticed that V'kandis' consort's name is about one letter different then the Shin'a'in goddess. Also, he thinks about how V'kandis' consort vanished about the same time as some large event in Shin'a'in and Taledras history, possibly during or a bit after the end of the Mage Wars. I can't give you pages, because my book is packed away somewhere (I hate moving!), but it's there, I know it is! Somewhere near the middle, I think. Anyways, all for now! 32 mint chocolate chip sheep to all! Zhai'helleva! Winterstar K'sheyna (sorry about this sig., but this little quote struck a chord in me) "Look back at our struggle for freedom, Trace our present day's strength to it's source, And you'll find that Man's pathway to glory, Is strewn with the bones of a horse."
