Message-ID: <98f1f1cc.35a62693-+AT+-aol.com> Heyla, all! I'll try to hit all the subjects that I remembered about, but since I hadn't posted in three days, I've forgotten a lot of what was said. I'm not sure about Vanyel whistling. It seems far too...carefree. That isn't a word I'd use to describe Vanyel. And Firesong? Well, whistling isn't exactly...dignified. Being a bit of a snob, I don't see him as whistling, either. Now, Dirk-Dirk would whistle. Yep. Going brain dead already. Somebody recently said that it took Rolan "like 3 days" to bring Talia back. It has to be more than that, because one of the lady guardsmen (guardsladies?) she meets say something to the effect of "You've been living for a week on that horsecrap from the waystations?!" It took two days before she reached the first town, about 4 days (not quite a week) to the quoted guardswoman, and maybe another four from then to Haven. I think that Rolan had been starting off in different directions, and then on one trip, he was close enough that he could sense Talia and head straight for her. And now, two questions, just to create even MORE joyous discussion. One: Does anyone think that reincarnation might be too easy for Heralds? Knowing the mindset required to be a Herald, many of them would feel required to come back. And then, any new blood wouldn't get a chance. And, Two: Who on the list would, given the choice, choose to be a Herald? (A beautiful white, blue eyed, intelligent looking horse just walked into your living room. What do you do?) Assuming you could come home for the occasional holiday visit. Anyway, I'm off on a trip to the Oregon Country Fair (The closest thing to a Renaissance Faire I can get to. And then I go on a hundred mile bike trip to meet my family at the coast, so I'll be absent for the week. So, Mhai'hellava (wind to MY wings, I'll need it.), everyone. Just *had* to de-lurk for these... re mages whistling: I *can* see Vanyel whistling - undercover - as part of a musicker persona he'd've assumed while on an assignment, but aside from that, well, he could probably give Mulder angst lessons... There's *is* a nice little picture playing itself through my 'puter-addled brain though: It's a nice mild spring day. The road's just right - not wet enough that mud's getting caught up on the Companion's hooves, but moist enough that there's no dust. The flowering trees on either side are alive with scent and sound, and Vanyel's playing softly on his lute as they travel along, for his favorite audience... =) I agree about Dirk being a whistler, and Skif's probably a virtuoso, especially at the little aimless tunes that he uses to try and convince you he's really *quite* harmless... Firesong whistling? Nah, can't see it. Joel asked: > And now, two questions, just to create even MORE joyous discussion. One: >Does anyone think that reincarnation might be too easy for Heralds? Assuming you could come home for the occasional holiday visit. Reincarnation *easy* for Heralds? I don't think so...If they come back as a Companion, they apparently retain access to their previous live's experiences and memories (and fears and traumas), but if they come back as a human, they're cut off from that knowledge base on a conscious level. And I haven't seen anything in the Collegium curriculum that mentions meditation techniques that might permit past-life regression. Another case of Companion-meddling? Am I correct in not seeing such mindwork techniques? Given the choice, would I choose to be Chosen? You betcha! In a heartbeat, no looking back, no questions asked... Scared? That too, but only that I wouldn't be able to work well enough with my new four-legged partner... And even if I couldn't get home for the occasional family visit, there's my new family of Heralds, and all the people I meet while on circuit. I can just see the this-Earth equivalent: A KITT-car with a white Mustang body matched up with a compatible driver after several years' training on both sides, getting assignments from an international organization that posts the pairs in different locations all over the world, with broad discretionary powers to handle problems they come across... Ah well, back to the old grindstone... In Arrows Fall, Dirk tears himself up with guilt that he hadn't told Christa that it was possible to Fetch yourself for short distances. I think that it is only possible to Fetch yourself or anything else that is alive if you have a really strong gift because Dirk also mentions that it's possible to smother someone or twist them up if you're not careful. Also...in Arrows Fall, Talia is surprised when she passes her internship. Are there ever Trainees who do not pass their internship or make it through the Collegium? If so, what happens to them? ALSO...The nature of the training of Heralds seems to have changed since Vanyel's time. In his time, the new Heralds seemed to be trained in more of a one on one way. The Herald-Mages trained with a more experienced Herald-Mage, and it seems I remember Herald Lores mentioning he had a mentor. Did they have the Collegium during Vanyel's time, or is it a more recent development? Or is that just me? IIRC, doesn't it say in one of the Storm books that the Shin'a'in goddess is a just the female aspect of Vkandis? Maybe it doesn't come right out and say it in the story but their are some pretty strong suggestions. The goddess seemed to know quite a bit (as in intimately) about Vkandis and how his religion works. OTOH maybe she just knows all that because she is after all a goddess.
