I was going to add my .02 cents worth on the Van/'Lendel debate, but I think Wintershard and Reighvyn pretty much covered my veiw! I can't blame Tylendel for reacting the way he did at the loss of his brother. He was a rather unstable person for all that he appeared otherwise, elsewise, why the triple bond? I do think that if Savil was thinking clearly at the time, she would have kept a much closer eye on him. Or Gwena should have been a little more alarmed at his shutting her out. Sometimes it can be hard to see the warning signs right under your nose though... even if you know (or think you know) someone really well... *Sigh.* Okay...Subject change... On the subject of being Chosen: If?? You mean you don't have a Companion? Uh... Khamsin? :Sorry dearest. Apparently you're the only one here who hears voices in her head.: Oh dear. Maybe I should start taking my medication again? :But what if you couldn't hear me anymore?: Hhhmmm... good point. What do psychologists know anyway. Two other things to add...I can't remember now who brought up either subject, but: 1)About being able to Fetch yourself, that's what the Companions do to travel as fast as they do. They Fetch themselves (and their riders) in leaps as they run. 2)Treesa's slight Empathy that was similar to 'Fandes (like "a melting icicle is to a waterfall") was basically a "mother's instinct" about her children. At least, acording to Radeval. Since we seem to have lost our Jeopardy, 500 chocolate sheep points to whoever can name 'Fandes' two foals! (And what sex they are.) This is the first time that I have been able to actually contact the list. All I had before was a library computer with no e-mail capabilities. I am not all that familiar with e-mail so please forgive any blunders. I have been reading the archives that are available and I have been dying to respond to some of the conversations. Anyway I feel it is fitting that I introduce myself. I'm from Hutchinson Kansas the land of cows, grain elevators and lately heat. I just completed my bachelors from Wichita State University and I am in the process of going for a masters in history. I am obviously a big Lackey fan. I also like Laurell K Hamilton, Judith Tarr, Anne McCaffrey and to many others to name. I seem to collect animals having 3 cats, 3 dogs, 3 ferrets and a horse named Chilly. I hope this gives everyone a little bit of info about me. On the subject of Van and Lendel and If I remember correctly Lendel owed Van because he had not loved him enough. It was fine that Van loved him and that the life bond existed, but Van's total dependency on Lendel was unexceptable. Lendel knew Van was dependent but he really did nothing to eliminate that bond. When his twin was killed he did not hesitate in using that bond for vengence. This is just my opinion but that might have been enough for Galla to have repudiated him. It was a totally vicious and selfish act because even in his deranged state, as a herald trainee, he should have been aware of the damage that would do to his lifebond. That is what he owed Van, he used him because he knew that he could if that bond of dependency had been broken Van might have had the strength of will to deny Lendel his request, despite his love for him. In hindsight and restored to sanity after death, Lendel knew that he had done an unforgiveable thing and that he had to make it right. Sorry for such a long first post, I'll try to make them shorter in the future. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Jul 1998 18:52:45 -0700 (PDT) From: Hlynna Shadowsinger To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: I still exist; recent acquisitions; non-misty stuff Message-ID: <19980718015245.13024.rocketmail-+AT+-send1b.yahoomail.com> I have been regrettably away from a computer for a while and have just caught up. There seems to be an interesting discussion (seems to be, is) about Lendel and Van. Unfortunately, I don't have anything to say. :) Anyway, I still exist, kind of. I recently bought Owlflight, but am saving it, along with other books that I have gotten this summer, for when my roomie leaves with her enormous library next month. I won't miss her, but I'll miss her books. I also found Tuger Burning Bright and on;y paid 80 cents!!!!! non-misty stuff: Has anyone read the Pern books? Am I crazy fro starting with Dragonflight (1968), Dragonquest (1971), and White Dragon (1978)? Or should I have begun with Dragonsdawn? Any advice appreciated, including where to go after White Dragon... obMisty: Has anyone else read the Fire Rose? I really enjoyed it...It was my first non-Velgarth. I think I'll reread it, cuz I like the idea of elemental magik. I also waonder if I may join the OOUH...I think I have a character to champion in Joe from the Serrated Edge. Lemme know? Thanks. So if you look in the archives (this list has archives, doesn't it?) in March/April, you could probably find one. I also thought there was one on the web somewhere. Firstly please excuse this bit of fluff... -To all of you who are complaining about hot weather, Does anyone want to trade places...pppllleeeaaassseee!!!!!!!! I'm here in Australia freezing my little tooshy off wishing summer would hurry up and get its lazy bum off the north and down to here so I can stop being bothered with a cold nose, freezing fingers and toes and not feeling my ears (and so I don't freeze when I go swimming..) and you are all making me think of snow and icy water but anyway, I'll probably be wishing it was cool too in a few months so I'll shut my ever so uncontrollable mouth and get on with the real things I wanted to ask. Here is my first question. Could somebody please tell me if, in the time line of the Velgrath book, are there any that come after the Storm series because I severly want to know what the fates of Valdemar, the empire, the other place....the one with king Tremane (Don't singe me!!!!!!!!!! Please, I have a bad memory and haven't read those for quite a while (I'm in the middle of "Silver Gryphon")...yes I know what you're going to say so please don't bother)... and the rest of the known Velgrath world...I got it!!!! It's Hardorn an I didn't even have to look!!...Please tell me it is Hardorn and that Hardorn isn't that one further south...no, thats Rethwellan..isn't it? -Ky ducks invoulanterily as she foresees a rather large lightening bolt flying towards her head and when realises that she hasn't been hit and nothing has changed..much..wonders if her imaginative bonded is playing trick with her mind again- Anyway, and my second question is...Could someone please privately or otherwise e-mail me a full and up to date list of Misty's works? All her works if possible (including music etc.) . Yes, Adrienne, before you lurch at me for apparently not listening to your important input on this very subject, I was listening and don't particularly want to delve into the archives because 1) I may never come out alive and 2) all that dust gives me sinus probs.... oh and while I'm here could someone please explain to me what year-wives and year-children are (from "White Gryphon" ) for me? And could someone teach me how to braid?!?!?! I'm not exactly sure what it is and I have the funniest feeling that it may be important in some minute way so a private e-mail would be very helpful. Most of the books say something to the effect of these books should be read in the order stated to get the effect the author wanted. As far as non Velgarth novels go, the Serrated Edge series is pretty good as well as the Diana Tregarde (sp) series if you like occult mysteries/horror. In that vein there is also Sacred Ground. Remember, in _MPrice_, when Van sees 'Lendel in his dream [or vision, or whatever it is], 'Lendel says he has lots to make up to Van and really owes him for not putting him [Van] first. 'Lendel and Staven had really messed up some of the opportunities their twin bond had given them. Staven had tried to use 'Lendel's status as Herald to manipulate and lobby at the court in highly appropriate ways. When dying, Staven, if incapable of asking 'Lendel to seek a peaceful solution, possibly could've drawn on his bond with 'Lendel to channel magic and take out his enemy in a final strike, not putting the onus on his twin, whom Staven seemed to view as an extension of himself [natural enough, given the {excessive} strength of their bond; any bond that confuses identity is excessive]. To make it up to Van, 'Lendel was reborn into a life where he could put Van first, with no conflicting duties [either twin or companion bonds]. I strongly suspect he and his former twin still shared a close bond [there being reasons behind these things]. Then behold Medren, whom we see using his gifts to manipulate people [his "pity me" stunt, where he tries to get Van to get him out of arms practice], who shares with Stefen the strong bond of music and who becomes his best friend, even trying to matchmake. He was about the same age as Stefen, so it's reasonable to assume that he was born after the twins' deaths. Based on this, I think Medren may well be Staven reincarnated. I suspect he may well have some making-up to do on his own account; being Medren gave him the chance to be Stefen's friend, without taxing him beyond the breaking-point [as had been done to poor 'Lendel--caught between a rock and a hard place: squish]. As Medren, Staven learned a bit about thinking about others, not being so selfish or manipulating so much. Then, if this same soul were reborn as *Skif*, it would explain the passage about the feeling of familiarity of 'Lendel/Stef "being able to say or forgive anything", etc. It would also mean he had learned enough and progressed enough to be worthy of being a Herald. Skif still had some rough spots, but it this is indeed the same soul, he's come a long way. I think 'Lendel would've liked to be reassured about his former twin and would've felt better about and readier for going on to the next thing, whatever that might be. ["Bermuda" seems indicated, in this case.] Is this possible? What does everyone else think? ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 1657 **********************************
