We all base our feelings upon our personal circumstances and experiences. Yes, there are people dying because of the heat and that is a horrible, tragic thing. Does that mean, then, that only 120 or so people, (the approximate number of people who have died so far) are qualified to complain about the heat? No. It's kind of like saying that a person with the flu shouldn't complain because there are people out there who have AIDS. We are all suffering in our own ways and don't need to be discounted because somebody, somewhere, is suffering a little bit more. John E. The one who died is gone and we don't know how much pain and loss s/he is suffering. If you ever lost somebody you loved you know how it feels. Long time ago I read something that touched me very much: "When we are both very old I want you to die shortly before me, so that I am the one who has to face the lonely walk to our house and our empty home." Some OBMisty: err, lessee. I am reading "The Bard's Tale" books at the moment. Did anybody like them? They weren't that bad but I cannot "become friends" with the characters. They are too flat for my liking. I liked Lendel, I just did not like some of his actions even before he lost his brother. Savil had warned him that she felt that Vanyel was becoming to dependent, she just did not know how much until it was too late. I like Lendel because he managed to bring Van out of that deadly shell that he had built around himself and he gave Van back his music. Still, he knew that Van was getting to dependent, but I think he was afraid to do anything that might have hurt Van's feelings. Vanyel was the one person who loved Lendel totally and did not try to use him. This cannot be said of Staven because he was trying to use Lendel's position as a herald in training to advance their family. I have to say that Savil was also at fault for Lendel's actions after his brothers death. In my opinion, she knew the nature of Lendel's family and their tendency to feud and avenge insults. She had been trying to ween that tendency out of Lendel, but she had not had much success. Knowing that she should of had a round the clock watch on him. But if that had happened then there would not have been a story, The Last Herald mage is my favorite series and in reality I would not change anything. Any way I can't complain about the heat anymore, now I get to complain about the rain. Wish I could send it down to Texas where it is really needed. Oooh, I like this category. I like this category a lot. So many of the characters I like the best make brief appearances -- let's see -- What's-his-face, Tannim's dragon mentor; Dave, in Children of the Night; 'Lendel; Jadus; Darkwind's brother; what's-his-name, the Irish-born engineer recruited in Born to Run -- this list could get long. I wonder why this is -- any theories? Dave is possibly one of my most-liked characters ever, but Di I don't care for as much. Another note, and one that's rather off-topic -- has anyone out there read GGK's Tigana? I just finished it a couple days ago, and I'm still playing with that ending in my mind. (I mean the very end of the epilogue -- the "three men see a riselka" bit.) If anybody has opinions on this they wouldn't mind discussing, please email me privately, 'cause I'd really like to talk about it with someone, and nobody I know here has read it. I was wondering why doesn't the mage gifted's powers manisfest itself during the period after Vanyel's death and until Elspeth's time ? Starwind said something about that if you don't master a mage gift it will master you. Yes, but that was only after they had been oped up. If there was no training available, the gift would wake up by itself very rarely. The new non0-herlad mages would almost surely either ignore the strange things going on around them, or possibly flee the country, where they wouldn't feel "watched". As for the Heralds, between the Companions, who Surely _knew_ what was going on, and all their other training, they probably kept it shielded within themselves without even realizing it. I forget exactly which book of the Winds trilogy discusses this, but I seem to remember someone saying that most mage-gifted youngsters were Chosen and their gifts trained as if they were a part of the Fetching family. I guess the others eventually blew themselves up, or some such. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Jul 1998 20:52:16 -0700 From: "Rhiannon" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Kris/Wet Wings/Mage Gift Message-ID: >Yep. If Wet Wings is the story I'm thinking of, then I liked it. Actually the first time I read it I think I missed the point, but the second time I read it I got it. I thought it was so sad. Are those other stories from the same anthology? I don't remember them. >I was wondering why doesn't the mage gifted's >powers manisfest itself >during the period after Vanyel's death and until >Elspeth's time ? >Starwind said something about that if you don't >master a mage gift it >will master you. > I think maybe the spell Vanyel set had something to do with it. But here's another thought. Mage power runs in families right? Well, by the end of LHM, all of the powerful mages in Valdemar had been killed. So there were no children being born with Master and Adept potential for many years. Maybe the royal family had it all in potential, and because the Gifts apear as they are needed, the mage gift manifested itself around Elspeth's time because it was definitely needed. Just a thought! When she turns to face the occupants of the hall you are able to see her blue and green streaked white blonde hair, and blue and green eyes that seem to glow impossibly bright. Smiling softly her milky white skin seems to have a slight golden glow to it. Taking a deep breath for courage she smooths her green blouse with a black bodice, and short silver skirt over her rainbow tights. Tapping her feet, which are encased in silver high heeled mary janes, she moves towards the center of the room to adress everyone at the same time. As her soft, shy words flow, you are able to hint the melodious tinkle of magic:: Heyla, my name is Ayngel Kyriana.
