I think that the birds are getting progressively more intellegent (a faster evolution from being so near magic?) because people (Darkwind was by Vree, and wossname from Owlflight--sorry, its been a while) are constantly surprised by stuff the birds do. The intelligence level isn't static, because if it was people wouldn't be surprised. I've had this problem since I was a toddler. I'm just naturally somewhat antisocial (could it be because the only person in my town besides me and my closest friends who reads Misty is a disgusting fiend who literally gave me a rash when he touched me? nah) I just don't get along with "real people". My solution to that prob is to say "but Mom, they ARE real people..what, did you thihnk they were made up?" So - I'll try again. Rember how Gwena tells us that all the Companions use mage energies to extend endurance and such? Darkwind also commented on that being the reason that Companions were that white with blue eyes. (I can't find my WoChange!) Remember, when Elspeth was with the Tayledras, I can't remember when, but she figured out that Companions had white coats and blue eyes, not to mention more endurance, because of their ability to tap into nodes and ley lines. Not to mention, they have become a symbol of justice, and Companions can be just as vain as their humans sometimes, so the image would be fun to keep up for them. The Plains that he returned to were not the same as the ones that he had fled so long ago. For one thing, magic was not forbidden anymore, so there was no problem with him being a mage. Also, I kind of got the feeling that An'desha had not gotten any support from his shaman and when he met Lo'isha and found a shaman who actually was giving him counsel. Then he met the Scrollsworn and found a place where he fit. He wasn't given that option before.
