The things you brought up were all true, there were, of course, many similarities, being the Stef was a reinc of Tylendel. But there were also quite a few dissimilarities, showing that upbringing can make a difference as well. After all, Tylendel was a noble, pre Choosing, Stef was a street rat. Tylendel also had a lot more Power at his disposal than Stef. Things things influenced them both. Tylendel tended to be much more sure of himself, not as tenative as Stef. After all, Tylendel is the one that Savil called "demon-child" on more than one occaision. Stef had the slight standoffishness that comes with always worrying about whether or not someone was going to abuse you. Not that he wasn't outgoing, so was Skiff (who also grew up that way), but his outgoingness tended to be "Bardic" outgoingness, a put on performance, when it came to dealing with true emotions he was much shyer. It all boils down to Tylendel was a "Dax" without a strong enough "Owner", when Stef came back, he was in the appropriate place, being younger then, and less sure of himself. But he returned as a "Justin" (I know, I haven't discussed Justins before, they are a type of proto-Dax, when they grow up, they'll be a Dax.) A Dax would never have left Vanyel at the pass alone, no matter how little personal power thy had. A Dax would have suggested that Vanyel and 'Fandes boost each other and contact the guard at the border, instead of running all the way back. Justins though, do what they're told (mostly). Stef didn't become a Dax until after Vanyel died. **************************** Me: <> Elsa: >I just like elves in general. I, of course, love elves. *grin* I am also not as happy with the way the Drizzt books are going and haven't read the last two. Cool Character Killing (tm) really annoys me. (Due to the order that I read Misty's works, it seemed that she killed off a Cool Character in every book!) Anywho, I guess you have to know a bit about the background of the Drow, before they make much sense. The whole race is like Falconsbane, they CHOSE to be evil. (Ha! tied it in *grin*) And they work hard to make sure that everyone stays that way. In fact, Falconsbane could have taken a lesson or two in how to run a household from the Drow. Another good Drow book is "Daughter of the Drow", which also has a sequal and a short story, all by Ellen Cunningham. It deals with a fem Drow, who realizes that she doesn't want to be evil anymore. Yay! Also, on the subject, I got to see Tempest in concert! It was outdoors, 95 degrees, and I danced for the whole show. Whew! Hot weather, but great music. Another CD to buy "when I get the money." >Does Misty have any stories written where the societies are Matrimonies? >Other than the Free Amozons which are MZB's? Well, assuming you meant matriarchies, which means the society is governed by women, (matrimonies is another word for marriages) I don't think she does. Maybe some of the Hertasi societies are, they ARE always cleaning things...sorry, couldn't resist =). But I can't remeber any human societies that are run only by women. Maybe if you really stretched the definition, Valdemar under Elspeth, Selenay, and Elspeth, (sounds like a law firm) could be considered a matriarchy, but most would just call it a monarchy. I also agree that it would have been much more fun to have a fun hack and slash cliffhanging adventure for when Keth recieved need, but you can always do what I do when I read something that should really be changed and mentally rewrite it. Bard's Tale was the first work of Lackey's that I ever read, and I thought it was good enough to encourage me to find the rest. Now that I've read the rest, I'm amazed that I ever thought it was more than slightly entertaining. I might have read Arrows of the queen first, but I was really quite turned off by the hideous pink and purple cover of the paperback version. (Oh, look. Another girly horse book.) Yeah, they say never judge a book by its cover, but I've never wholly followed that. If it's got lots of bare skin and swirling scarves, it's not likely to be a high work of literature. (It was >co-written with Piers Anthony.) Weren't the women in charge, and most >men slaves? (and the status of women was determined by the strength of >their magic and the number of slaves they owned.) Yes, she did. I've heard a lot of people say they didn't like this book, but I LOVED it! I've read it several times since buying it. I guess the part I liked the most was the first half or so, when the heroine (can't remember her name) was struggling to fit into the society while making changes. I guess the idea of being able to conjure up one's surroundings to fit one's mood is appealing, also. >OOH! I can't remember who mentioned Tigana, but I read a long time ago >and I loved it. Yeah, that was a great one. We should all feel lucky that GGK has come to the notice of the American reader - My priest introduced me to the Fionavar Tapestry. She wound up having to order the third book from British publishing house because initial American audiences didn't bu enough copies of the first two books to warrant the publication of the third. >I've been trying to draw Mornlithe Falconsbane, and I can't remember if >he had a goatee. Falconsbane just had fur all over his face. If I remember, he was described as lynx-like in appearance. >Definitely! Loreena McKennitt has a talent for setting classic poetry to >music--as well as The Highwayman, she's done The Lady of Shallot and, I >believe, The Two Trees or something to that effect. Another good song on >The Book of Secrets is Dante's Prayer... Who is this McKennitt person and can I find her albums in regular music stores? What little I've heard makes me think that I will like her, but living in an ordinary small city in Georgia, we don't have much of anything in the way of small-label record stores. Little Fluff.... >Ellen shena Liha'irden walks over to John E. Morris and places a gold, >platinum and silver ring in his hand. "I do not regret anything I have >said, but I also do not like to argue. I offer this ring as a token of >peace and a symbol of friendship." Aw.. me?? .I'm overwhelmed. Though It may not seem like it sometimes, I also do not really like to argue and accept this ring in the hopes that I will never again become overbearing and insulting. (I look GOOD in gold, silver and platinum ) No mo' Fluff. Ok y'all, I'm off for the weekend to (how's this for a picturesque, fantasy-like locale name) Blood Mountain. My ever-generous sister has rented the whole clan cabins and were just going to relax. I do have to admit that I'm NOT taking a Misty book for the obligatory "going to the mountains" reading material, but am taking John Irving's new novel "A Widow for a Year" Of course, sometimes I think, with his characters and situations, that Irving would have made a great fantasy writer. Y'all have a great weekend! John E. Morris New ICQ member (#16410759) I'm so excited!!! Love the Highwayman, ADORE All Soul's Night, and have finally figured out what a mummer is and why they dance. :) >Although I >do have a copy of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy that many, many people >have mistaken for a bible. Ha ha! I get that too. Humility Garden and Delta City by Felicity Savage are always thought of as romance novels (they're about, to put it bluntly, murderers and political manuvering). Message-ID: <19980731074253.15563.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> Heyla All!!! I know its been a few days but I'm back now so here goes my first attempt at braiding- not that I have much to braid with but anyway:o) >I'm guessing that companion's color is just heritary now. After all, newly >born companions are white, and they don't have a chance to even to be exposed >to node energy! Okay, this is just a wild guess while stabbing furiously at a mysterious patch of darkness but is it possible that the bleaching/ white colouring of the newly born companion is in some part due to the magical use of their mother? And also I seem to remember a snippit about the very first companions being white with blue eyes anyway and even though they were grove born there isn't much if anything that could vary the colouring since they're all white and they don't go with normal horses. It was just a thought....It's gone now. >How do you think that the companions continued to >effectively work after the storms? Okay, I have a few theories for this, firstly I've seemed to pick up that before the cataclysm (BG) the magic was stronger than after and I've develpoed a thought that the storms were sending all the magics back to as they were before the cataclysm so the magic wasn't actually disappearing but more returning to normal or rejuvinating (SP?!?!) Then my second thoughts are that maybe the companions are able to store more energy within themselves and/or that they also generate more natural magic that humans/ other magical beings. Well anyway. >Does anyone else hope that Misty plans to use the character >of Andesha again? Um, I'm not actually sure since I found him quite annoying because he was so very reserved but kinda radiated this aura of maturity and authority even though it wasn't there. I don't know, my brains doing to many cartwheels, but I would like to know more about the path that he was deciding to follow so maybe that could be a way to bring him in again. What I do know is that I would really love to know what actually happened after the last storm (SBreaking). I haven't actually read them but I've gathered that the Owl books were from about the Ancar war time not after the storms. I would also like to know how Karal and Natoli go. I don't necessarily mean like 'together' but I found them both very interesting characters and very likeable. I could relate to both of them quite a lot. So here's the last of it. It's actually a previous post from me but I wasn't sure whether it got through seeing as my computer had the hiccups at the time that I sent it. Heyla list sibs!!! Firstly please excuse this bit of fluff... -To all of you who are complaining about hot weather, Does anyone want to trade places...pppllleeeaaassseee!!!!!!!! I'm here in Australia freezing my little tooshy off wishing summer would hurry up and get its lazy bum off the north and down to here so I can stop being bothered with a cold nose, freezing fingers and toes and not feeling my ears (and so I don't freeze when I go swimming..) and you are all making me think of snow and icy water but anyway, I'll probably be wishing it was cool too in a few months so I'll shut my ever so uncontrollable mouth and get on with the real things I wanted to ask. Here is my first question. Could somebody please tell me if, in the time line of the Velgrath book, are there any that come after the Storm series because I severly want to know what the fates of Valdemar, the empire, the other place....the one with king Tremane (Don't singe me!!!!!!!!!! Please, I have a bad memory and haven't read those for quite a while (I'm in the middle of "Silver Gryphon")...yes I know what you're going to say so please don't bother)... and the rest of the known Velgrath world...I got it!!!! It's Hardorn an I didn't even have to look!!...Please tell me it is Hardorn and that Hardorn isn't that one further south...no, thats Rethwellan..isn't it? -Ky ducks invoulanterily as she foresees a rather large lightening bolt flying towards her head and when realises that she hasn't been hit and nothing has changed..much..wonders if her imaginative bonded is playing trick with her mind again- Anyway, and my second question is...Could someone please privately or otherwise e-mail me a full and up to date list of Misty's works? All her works if possible (including music etc.) . Yes, Adrienne, before you lurch at me for apparently not listening to your important input on this very subject, I was listening and don't particularly want to delve into the archives because 1) I may never come out alive and 2) all that dust gives me sinus probs.... oh and while I'm here could someone please explain to me what year-wives and year-children are (from "White Gryphon" ) for me? And could someone teach me how to braid?!?!?! I'm not exactly sure what it is and I have the funniest feeling that it may be important in some minute way so a private e-mail would be very helpful. Anyhoo, popsicle sheep to all of you who are feeling a bit hot and nice warm electric sheep to everyone for the cold... or when it gets cold to some people... Zhai ' helleva and bright smiles to all, Kyblade Priestess of Caiseal Morh, Goddess of Earth, Fire, Water, Air and Creation. Bonded to Trian her beloved companion and no longer Kestra'chern in training. (Actually no longer Kestra'chern at all since I have no hope of legally using that title since I don't know how to make it legal and I don't particularly want to be dragged off to a dark cold cell in the depths of the law service dungeons..even though I could easily gate myself out : ) but that might get me into more trouble and I'm not exactly sure that wiping the actual memory from the minds of all would be the best ideas because it could cau...Okay, I'll be quiet now -bows head in shame for a moment that pops head back up with a bright smile for all to see- Smiles to all, Kyblade -Kyblade and Trian quickly exit the hall to frollick in the bright sun of their dreams...- ANYway, that's it.
