I have to agree with you here. I think that really only Ther Heralds of Valdemar and LHM really have that sense that the main characters have been to Hell and back before the series is over. Don't get me wrong, I like the other books, too, and I'm not belittling anything the other characters went through. It's just that I think only Vanyel and Talia really went though all that emotional pain that potentially could have bee crippling in a weaker person. That they overcame it is part of what made the stories. I also don't like Storms or Owlflight as much b/c it doesn't concentrate on the Heralds as much (but I don't have that problem with V&H or BTS). Oh well, I've rambled enough for one morning! I would still appreciate feedback on my personal email, we could trade favorite authors. Second, "Black Caldron"! Waii! (Japanese for huray!) Happy happy bounce bounce. Third, get ahold of Best of MZB's FM vol II, story in there called 'Satanic Versus' by Misty. Its hillarious. Its a Diane Tregarde story, I didn't think there were any after the books. (Read essay "The Last Straw". If you don't have it I can send it to you.) Also I'm looking for the Misty story 'Wet Wings' with appeared in an anthology. I think it was one of the Sisters in Fantasy anthologies but I'm not sure. Thats also a good one, gives you some insight into what it would be like to be a fantasy author in a totally PC society. I don't think anyone of that nature subscribes to this list, but please, no wierd posts about the Di Tregarde novels and Misty being some great magical guru. She's a talented author with a vision (hopefully 20/20) not a coven leader. (My parents would disagree, but that is based on the amount of money I spend when I go to Barnes and Noble =) ) Hmm... if anyone doesn't like MZB, I'd say they weren't introduced to her properly. I really liked most of Tiger Tiger, despite the fact that I don't really like Andre Norton's writing. Don't dicuss it with me please--my father is an Andre-addict, and I get enough crap at home. I'd recommend it, but I wouldn't put any pressure...I am admittedly biased because of my dad's pressure.... Kalistia mentioned destroying To Sir With Love...I'll have you know that at a friend's (Miranda's) birthday party she sat up all night trying to finish Magic's Pawn, and when Savil died she grabbed Miranda's book (which belongs to Ball High, btw) and gnawed it. That was bizarre...all I did was throw stuff when I read it. Chewing something that doesn't belong to you is weird. But that's ok, Kalistia....I love you anyway...I think.... ObMisty...sort of..... Just a note to anyone in the Galveston area: The Galveston Book store (on 23rd st) is finally organized after their hectic move. Their books aren't entirely in order, so you may hafta search a little, but they have many Misty books. That's a hard question to answer. I relate to parts of almost all of the main characters. If I had to choose one...hmm... I would say our beloved Vanyel. First, because I tend to let people into my heart only so far in order to protect myself from being hurt and to keep from hurting them. Second, because I may look like I have things together on the outside but I'm full of self-doubt inside. I am Lady Laurel. In search of a Valdemar fanfic list, I found this one. So I just wanted to say a few things. Misty's work has touched my like no other. I think a few of the reasons were: it was my first fantasy (Arrows) and I was a tender age (12) and I was going through some rough times in my life. So I have to say that her books were a salvation, another world to escape in. And even though that was ten years ago, I can pick up my same worn, beaten copies of Arrows and Last Herald Mage, and be comforted by old friends. They are still very dear and close to me. However, I think that after a certain amount of time, her work deteriorated, and it seemed to lack a certain element. It was touched on in the list earlier, that her characters don't seem to have to suffer as much. It is true. She doesn't establish a connection, empathy or even sympathy between the reader and her character. Talia and Vanyel have to go through so much in their stories, that you just can't help feeling for them. This is was not established for me with Elspeth, or the gryphon. See, this is my point exactly. I could never forget Talia, Skif, Kris, Tylendel, Savil, Stefen, Keren, Sheril, and even Selenay. But the main characters in peripheral series failed to make an impression on me. I was completely paralyzed by Tylendel's death, and then by Vanyel's. None of the other stories (Mage winds, the gryphon, and then her current trilogy) captured me as the first two did. I do like the Oathbound series, but it was not in Valdemar, so it did not interest me as much. However, her writing is still excellent in this series. But I do not see the quality in later work. Does any one else have anything to say about this? ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Aug 1998 03:39:25 -0600 From: florian-+AT+-gulf.net (Florian) To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re:Introduction and Opinion Message-ID: > Lady Laurel. > > In search of a Valdemar fanfic list, I found this one. ---- Misty won't let us write fanfic . But I do not see the quality in later work. Does any one else > have anything to say about this? > I think the same thing, and I think I know the reason why she has strayed a lot from the dark element of her work. She's been through a tough time over some of her work (Read "The Last Straw" -- I'm willing to send it to you) and she's seen some of her good friends get hurt. I don't think she wants to dwell on the darker side of life, but rather show people the wonder of being alive. I can understand. However, its affecting the quality of her work. Valdemar isn't a capital of heroes anymore, recently its become home of the goodie goodies. I have a hard time identifying with a lot of her newer characters because they don't seem to suffer. Heck, I'm not even stricken by any of the wars Valdemar has been through since the Karsite war. I can't remember when I cried over anything as much as Tylendal's death. I still put down the last book of 'Mage with teary eyes. What I'm worried about is this: Valdemar is heading towards a period of industrial revolution, and if anyone has studied any history you know what a mixed blessing this was for England, US, ect. Is Misty going to bring back the realisim of her earlier work to show people struggling through hardships to overcome them? Is she going to just sail blithely (sp?) through this change without batting an eye? What do you think? Florian (rant rant rant, thats all I ever do. I'm not this bad in person, really) ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 1672 **********************************
