I don't remember seeing it. Here on earth, when the crossbow was developed, it was regarded with horror as the ultimate killing device, the one which would change our lives forever, etc. -- kind of like your view on guns. We already know from the Storms books that Valdemar is working on developing alternative forms of communication (one based on the device found in Urtho's Tower, at least, and possibly the signaling mirrors from Hardorn, in addition to "plain old" mind-speech). If Heralds ever become Gunslingers (which is *not* something I'd like to see) I'm sure they'll still have some way of communicating with each other in emergencies. More to the point, I think, is how the development of a railroad would affect the role of the Companions. -- "Daddy, why do those people have to | Greg Wooledge use Microsoft Windows?" | wooledge-+AT+-kellnet.com "Don't stare, son; it's not polite." | http://www.kellnet.com/wooledge/ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 09 Aug 1998 12:04:36 -0500 From: Amy Trujillo To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Music Message-ID: <35CDD69B.5912-+AT+-southwind.net> For anyone wanting to hear music similar to that of the Renfests in Knight of Ghost and Shadows they should check out the Firebird catalog. I know that there is one CD that has some of the songs from the book including Drowsy Maggie, Boys of Ballisadare, Banish Misfortune and Sheebeg Sheemore on it. Heather Alexander also plays fiddle on it. It is Southwind by Glenn Morgan and it is traditional Celtic, non vocal but very good. For vocal, Solas is a very good band. For celtic rock Tempest and Old Lead are the two I like the best. ObMisty: The Valdemaran industrial revolution thread reminds me: a couple centuries before the industrial revolution on our world, we had the printing press. Does Valdemar have anything that could substitute for the printing press, or any plans in that direction? (It's quite possible that our own industrial revolution -- and the science which enabled it -- would not have occurred when it did without the ability to disseminate ideas rapidly and accurately through mass printing.) -- "Daddy, why do those people have to | Greg Wooledge use Microsoft Windows?" | wooledge-+AT+-kellnet.com "Don't stare, son; it's not polite." | http://www.kellnet.com/wooledge/ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 09 Aug 1998 14:55:36 -0500 From: Amy Trujillo To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Magic, technology and fluff Message-ID: <35CDFEB2.575E-+AT+-southwind.net> Sorry, Sorry, sheepish grins all around. I got cut off before I could finish my last post. i had wnted to say something about magic and technology. I do not think that Velgarth will ever have the extreme problems with technology that we do for one simple reason, the gods. As involved as Vkandis and Kal'enel are with their people, I doubt they would ever let serious harm be done. The Shin'a'in would be interested in advanced technology, IMHO they would view it with the same suspicion as magic. The Karsites are so bound up in their religion that if Vkandis wanted to limit technology it would not be a problem. All of the other countries had similar dieties/mystical beings protecting them from harm. I do believe in magic, even if it is just the everyday sort like empathy that can make people be extrodinarily kind upon occasion. The greater magics are more of a mystery to me but I hope they are out there, and that it is the right people who have it. ******************* After lurking outside for several weeks a short young woman with long brown hair enters the hall. She is wearing a rich green robe with a large multicolored sack hanging from her shoulder. Before she can say a word four noses poke out of the sack followed quickly by the bodies of three ferrets and one chipmunk as they make a made dash toward the people in the hall. Abadoning all dignity the girl scrambles after them, catching just before they dive into the crowd. Blushing furiously the girl says, "Sorry for the commotion but these rascals always want to meet new people." Still blushing the girl sinks onto the floor and puts her friends back in the sack leaving it open so they can see out. "Anyway tomorrow is my birthday so I wanted to give everyone here a gift." Without further notice she opens her palm and the room is suddenly filled with the sound of chocolate chip sheep falling to the ground all around the hall. With no more comment the girl retires to the back of the hall to calm down her friends who once again are trying to escape their sack. *********************** Until next time Amy Ferret Friend ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 09 Aug 1998 17:22:56 PDT From: "Rhiannon Shadowsong" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: magic/technology/fluff Message-ID: <19980810002257.2878.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> >More to the point, I think, is how the development of a railroad would >affect the role of the Companions. Shockingly, I have a mildly coherent response that has factual backup! Mark your calendars! When the train was first invented an ordinary horse was faster and beat it in a race. The engines were eventually improved, but the initial race was a flop. Companions are way faster than that, even under ordinary circumstances. And when they really want to move, they can probably go as fast as modern vehicles, thanks to that fetching trick. Not to mention that Companions don't need rails. The only real use for trains would be for the ordinary people. It could replace horses, but never Companions. Companions are better, no way around it. And that's not even taking into account that they are smarter than horses and are the Heralds' friends, not just transportation. >Firesong says his hair was white after 10 years right? I'm sorry but I have NO recollection of that. And I practically have TLHM memorized. But then, almost everyone does. And I do recall that some one mentioned that it takes 30 yrs or so somehwere else. Or at least not as much as we did and the others in Velgarth. I, though, would be disapointed if they did. One reason I read fantsy is because it is in a time with out a ton of tecnology. My $0.02 about magic in real life is I belive in it. Why not ? The brain is a big organ that we don't use much of. I also belive in elves, dragons, and most mythical creatures. Why would there be so many old tales about them if the hadn't existed. I think they still exist I just don't know where. Does anyone have any ideas of where they could be ? I know this tread is kind of old but I've been in a car for 16 hours straight and I started thinking about who I relate to. Someone might point out that I already choose Talia and I still agree with that. But I also think I relate to Vanyel because I find that I put up bericades (sp?) around myself and don't let many people in like Vanyel did. I thought he meant that his hair turned white when he was 10, not after 10 years. There was this passage about him working magic since he could toddle...
