Therefore, she must be fifteenish by the end of AFall, because it's after the year and a half Talia was out. In BTS she's assisting to Kerowyn as part of her internship, and therefore about 19+. Now, in SWarning, which I happen to be rereading now, Karal thinks Talia looks to be 30, but she comments that she's not VERY much older than he is. Between these, given Elspeth being four years younger than Talia, she's stuck at around 26 by the end of the Winds trilogy, ne? And, as Daine noted, "it says at the very beginning in Winds of Change something about having survived 1000 ceremonies in her 26 years." We've got a potential minor Misty-ake on our hands, I think. If Talia is, in fact, not more than 30 at the beginning of the Storms, then Elspeth romped through the entire Winds trilogy at the merry age of 26. Anybody have indicators on how long the trilogy took? ************ Amy asked who's the best villain. I think Orthallen's the best villain: he's the most human. With no materials other than sneaky avarice and malicious power-hunger, Misty created a venomous bad-guy. All the others, in Velgarth at least, IIRC, are ALSO MAGICALLY pretty powerful. So, I think Orthallen is the distillation of evil at a fundamental level. Anyone recall other Velgarth non-mage bogie-men? (and I don't think Relthorn(?) counts, since he was basically working for Leareth). ************* Greg wrote: "I do believe that's the first time I've *ever* heard Heinlein called a liberal! The Shrike is a pretty mythical figure, and the book is more cerebral than the techno-babble usually associated with hard scifi. (Note: I do have a fondness for technobabble) I actually like the fact that it's not self-consistant since the story is told from so many viewpoints. Someone mentioned somewhere that it had only been a few years, it might have been that the twins were still little, not more than four or five. Sorry, no textevd, the books are somewhere that I am not. On the villain thread, I think that Ma'ar was the best villain. He may have gone crazy and that put a bit of a damper on his evil, but he managed to do a lot over his years of exchanging bodies. He was the person responsible for the deaths of all the Herald-Mages during Vanyel's time, forcing Vanyel to make the web, and he killed Vanyel, who never had time to train new mages, leaving Valdemar unsafe because they had no Herald-Mages to combat evil mages. Also, Ma'ar was responsible for the creation of the Cataclysm (sp?) and even for the death of Urtho. I think he managed to cause the most damage of any evil mage in Misty's books. That's all, folks. There is a chat room on EFnet called #Valdemar which is the principle hang-out for people from this list and other related lists. I don't know that it is a "Misty" channel, since we mostly gather there to chat and catch up on news, rather than serious deep Misty discussions. Yes I know the second isn't really a villian any more but he was for a while and he managed to get the Son of the Sun very mad at him and in my opinon he drove Emperor Charliss insane. And he wasn't afraid to kill people to keep his own people safe. I think Tremane's just really cool. And Lereath is the coolest of Ma'ar's incarnations that I've seen. He killed Van and destroyed all the Herald-Mages. And *he* didn't go mad like Falconsbane did. Well, that's my take and now I hope I can get back to lurking, Ingrid Blythe, Canada for World Domination You didn't read that ;) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Aug 1998 11:29:24 -0400 From: efluharty-+AT+-juno.com (Ellen K Fluharty) To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Haven: A Mercedes Lackey Chat Room Message-ID: <19980819.112925.3846.0.efluharty-+AT+-juno.com> Well, I visited the chat room, wiped up the cobwebs, set about the place with a broom....but no one was there to admire my cleaning job.....oh well. Would it be possible to arrange a time to chat? I know that we are all in different time zones, but maybe we could still coordinate something....I dunno. It sounds like it could be fun. obMisty: I'm re-reading Winds of Change again.....I NEED NEW MISTY!!!!! ARGH!!!! (sniffle) I'm o.k., really I am..... I guest the best villian is Ma'ar, but afterall, with each reincarnation he got worse, and who could beat that? In my opinion, the best/worst villian is the one that starts out with good intentions, and spirals into evil....(that person is the most realistic....the easiest to understand.) It's the only Velgarth book I don't own and haven't read, and I'm DYING to get my hands on it! Also, if any of you have read "Elvenblood" and "Elvenbane", is there rumor of another book in the series? It was my opinion that "Elvenblood" ended rather abruptly and with quite a few loose ends.
