I think that, even if there are restrictions on carrying weapons on velgarth, which I rather doubt, Kero was allowed to keep her sword because, for one thing, it was Need, and even in her dormant state she may have taken measures to prevent herself from getting placed in the wrong hands. It's also possible that she was allowed to keep Need because she was working at that tavern as a person who broke up fights, and a sword might have been necessary in order to do this. And even if they didn't have laws preventing people from carrying weapons, they obviously did against *using* them on a member of the Guard. And a great shortsightedness it was, too, considering what that cretin did! Well, that's my $0.02 worth on this subject. Oh, and in no way Misty related, I was also wondering if anyone here knew of a David Eddings mailing list. I've searched for one, but in vain. If anyone would be so kind as to tell me if there one exits, please e-mail me. Something dragged me out of lurkerdom :) Gael's Gossamer Axe is one of her best books. It gives a whole new perspective on Elves, too. As for Robin McKinley, Blue Sword, Hero and The Crown, and many others are quite good. (did you like Outlaws?) And, for anyone who really wants a seriously difficult novel (but soo rewarding) to read, try 'Freedom and Necessity' by Steven Brust and Emma Bull. It is exceedingly good. Now where's my copy? /hunts around, ah! Time to reread it, methinks. :) And now to tackle the original question: Sometimes--especially if I don't like the way the plot is going--I'll write myself or a character that's partly me into the story I'm reading. And then, I'll let things readjust themselves. Or, I'll figure out how I might have dealt with certain situations, better--or differently--than the characters. ObMisty: Um, well, um... I haven't been reading much Misty recently... Sorry. Van's still my fave though. What have I been reading? The Virgin New Adventures, the New Doctor Who Adventures, and Regency romances... Message-ID: <060501bdced9$513e3ba0$0d7128c3-+AT+-i.casale> Hi everyone. I've had terible computer problems- my computer crashed, burned and died and I've only JUST got a new one from which I can send to the list. Hope everyone is well. Anyway, first a question/ beg: Does anyone have a copy of Summouned to Tourney that they would be willing to sell/ lend or know where I could buy one? ** FOR UK LISTSIBS ONLY** I have been collecting Misty books and I was considering- very vaguely, setting up a library because it's VERY hard to find a lot of the books in the UK. It would work as borrowers paying for sending and return p&p, but anyone borrowing a books would have to send in a cheque first to cover replacement of all books they were borrowing. The cheque would be returned when the book was, unless the book was damaged. It would have to work this way because otherwise a lot of books could simply go wandering and if one did get lost or damaged I'd have a real problem. The lending period would be three weeks, no renewals without book return or at very least a phone call. I've seen this working over the USA in other things and was just considering it, but I'm not making any promises- right now what I've collected is my pride and joy and I'd have to think out all the kinks carefully, but I would love to hear what everyone has to say, so please mail me privately at i.casale-+AT+-ukonline.co.uk If you think it's a dumb idea please say so with no greater elaboration on my mental capabilities or lack of. I also don't have all the books but if I did set this up I might invest to get what I could so that all borrowers would have access to whatever they wanted. WEll, I'd love to hear what you all think:) ** End For UK Listsibs Only** Well as to learning to love reading- sorry this is very out of date- I refused ( for my first year of school) to learn to read when I was young because I was dyslexic and my teachers only taught via whole word recognition which made no sense at all to read. I did learn very slowly after that and a fours years into school one teacher finally picked up on my disablity. I then had extensive training to help me deal with this and since then I never looked back about reading. I love it but it is quite hard work for me- the letters tend to rearrange themselves Sorry to put you through that long description but a lot of people don't understand the effects of unrecognised dyslexia- often the teachers will call a pupil with this disorder lazy or stupid= what could put you off reading more, especially when it isn't your fault? Characters I sympathize with... Well, Elspeth's: I don;t want to be pushed into this. Karal problem of not being listened to because he's young. Van's sense of isolation. Rune's passion for her art... bits of lots of characters, but not really any one in particular. Re: silvering hair- textevd. is in Winds of Change when Firesong first comes on the scene- I was ambiguous about the ten years and his hair going white. Re: mothers... Well I think Selanay is a good mother- most importantly she loves her daughter. I haven't read many of the books though I must say so I can't comment to much further. Re music and whoever mentioned Clannad: I love their music- the collection is the best CD of theirs- I wasn't too enamoured of the others- and that was has a song called 'two sisters' which is the song Rune is making a parody on. Re when reading: I also get very caught up in books- too caught up and there are somethings that ring bells with me that get me really upset, and yes I've been other characters/ main characters/ made up a story in the writer's universe... and am dead to the world when into my reading. Re villains: Well Tremane is under this heading and he's my favourite because he's the most realistic and human. Had-blahblah from White Gryphon was just nuts. Ancar/ falconsbane/ ma'ar/ leareth, well they were all too similar- and too sinister. They made such a point of being sinister that it really quite detracted from that side of the atmosphere about them. Ma'ar and Leareth ( so far as I've read ) I don't know enough about for them to be characters as much more of incarnations of pure evil so they're too one sided. Re newbies: welcome! I had only just delurked when my computer died so I'm fairly new again myself! Re gunpowder/atomic warefare/ environmental issues: I like velgarth the way it is- I mean the artificers were very interesting and I'd like to hear more about them but when they're at the beginnings atges- the discovery-invention stages and less at the industrialisation stage. Re Magic Sword-cartoon: I love cartoon- I'm such a baby! but they are so _nice_. There's not enough nice in the world and so sometimes when I'm feeling really down about things I like watching kids films... anyway... did anyone see this and what did they think of the gryphon in it? Re summer reading: misty!!!!!!!! ( and my acceptance letter to Cambridge university!) Also got 4 out or 5 of the pyrdian books Lloyd Alexander and 'The Last unicorn'. ALso... Forbidden planet and Hay-on-wye bookstores are good places to look for Misty books. Re ages: no clue Same to Elspeth;s fighting ability Re age: age discrimination is a really really annoying thing- and dangerous. Look at Karal for an example of adults saying 'I've got age and knowledge of stuff from reading over you're experience in ***** field, so I'm the expert and what you say is immature and unfounded'. Re mind to mind lying: probably just an oversight- is it a lie if you've forgotten you promised not to say something and later do? Is it only intentional lies that count? RE being a villain: if you don't get screwed up to become evil then, yes it's more fun- and even if you do- it's much more pleasant to take out rage on others as opposed to oneself- see Falconsbane V Van. Re weapons: Storm warning certainly has crossbows. WEapons laws- no clue- probably not possession laws but different assult laws if weapons involved wold be my guess. Re speed of mage bolts: no idea! Re to be a herald?: Well I'm actually often accused of being far to literal about everything but a romantic at heart- a lifebond, a companion/bondbird/familiar/even Need would be something that would make a big difference in my life. I've spent a lot of it being ill and am quite a solitary person now- I like people a lot but they tire me, and a bond of that sort would make me feel like I had all the company and the ability to love that I needed. Re pets: I adopted two kittens from the rescue centre. One was very damaged and while he was improving, he was still very feral and got killed hunting when crossing a road. I managed to teach him how to purr though first:) The other grew from a tiny, skinny, sick little terrified wretch into a six and a half kilo purring monster who is so contended that he will sleep on his back, paws splayed wide. He can charm anyone- even the vets who see hundreds of cats and is the most incredibly sweet natured animal- but he's hard work- they both were in terms of training and loving- Meg will cry if he isn't cuddled every hour at the very least! Re plot twists: when a character I love does something I hate I get very very angry and frustrated because I love the character but I'm pissed off with them doing something wrong! BG- well I love Skan's little asides WEll I don't think I can think of a single thing more to say! Do we feel like one of the main characters, or change the story like Talia did. . Just wanted to add my two coppers on this thread. I tend to change viewpoints depending on the situation. If the main character is thinking about something then I tend to become that character. If there is mostly dialogue or action then I'm like a vrondi suspended over the character's shoulder. Sometimes I'm in and out of the character's heads so much that it's dizzying. Someone asked what other books we read at the moment I am re-reading Bedlam's Bard and starting a couple of books by Ian McDonald. Trying to get in just a little more pleasure reading before school starts back up. Rhiannon Shadowsong said: Sorry about the Rant. I posted it before I read the request to end the discussion (sorrysorrysorrysorry) and I apologise if this irritated anyone. I'm finally going through the mail (this stuff really builds up and I've been busy for a solid week). You said many of the things that I wanted to say but didn't for fear of being in violation of the council's wishes. While that whole mess was going on, it was all I could do to keep from jumping in with all four feet and claws extended. While reading Bedlam's Bard I came upon Misty's cameo appearance in the book and I started pondering a question. If they did a Valdemar movie would Misty want to play one of the characters herself; and would she want to be a main character or merely make a cameo appearance? Another question is what character do you think Misty would want to play if she wanted to be in the movie?
