Well...I had been reading fantasy for about 4 years at that point, Tolkien, Fiest etc., and I was looking for a new author to read while on vacation in Colorado. I stopped in at a bookstore in a mall and I saw this really beautiful book cover. It was Magic's Pawn, I read the back, liked it and the rest is history. I devoured the novel and instantly went out and bought the rest of the trilogy. Since then I buy every Misty book I can lay my hands on and I have enjoyed them all. ************* A lady wearing a soft green robe with a multicolored bag on her shoulder walks toward the newbies, Heyla all hope you enjoy it here. From the bag pokes out the little noses of three ferrets and a chipmunk. My friends say hi too. They love stealing things so I would watch my belongings if I was you. Oh and newbies, really there is no reason to look behind you really, no one has a bucket. ;) With that the lady backs away clutching her sack, turns and flees to the other side of the hall to evade the deluge that is soon to come. Safely away she realizes that her bag weighs more than it should, she looks in and realizes that her friends have been at it again. Scolding them but unable to keep a smile off her face, she drags out her babies plunder. There is a griffon feather, a small purple towel, a ring, a sock and library card. Looking at the ring she realizes that it looks a great deal like the friendship ring. She looks around the hall, quietly gets up and puts the ring on a table that she has conjured along with everything else her ferrets have stolen. Quickly digging out a note pad she writes: TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: MY FERRETS STOLE THESE THINGS! APOLOGIES TO ALL WHO MAY HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THEM. With that she quickly retires to the back of the hall to see if anyone has noticed what she has done. It had to do with the > changing role of women in society and the lack of mothers was ment as an > excuse for the "male" (i.e. "competent") behaviour of the heroine. That's very interesting. Along the same lines, I took a class once (coincidentally while I was studying in Munich) that was a study of Women and Madness in American fiction and film. We studied mostly 20th century novels (and some films) in which the female characters who differed from the norm were either seen as crazy by those around them, or who went crazy trying to conform. _The Bell Jar_ by Sylvia Plath is an excellent example. The main character is basically shown the two stereotypical roles women are supposed to fit into: the traditional housewife materal figure and the hardnosed business female who has rejected all that is "womanly". She rejects both these roles and, as a consequence, slowly goes insane. I find it very encouraging that women have more options these days. ----- Date: Tue, 25 Aug 1998 22:05:56 +0100 (BST) From: Rhiannon Shadowsong >Someone wrote: >>Does anyone know why there >>isn't a fantasy\Scifi unit in Literature class? I and the other girl in my class who was also really into Scifi/Fantasy were so annoyed because we thought it was a rotten example of SF. Most academics still have a huge prejudice againt genre fiction, which is really an awful thing. But this goes back to the whole lit discussion, so I'll stop here. > I'd like to stick my book recommendations in here... I am currently > reading all my summer crud too... After a moment it dawned on me that you were talking about /book/ plots. :) When I'm reading a good book, especially right before I go to sleep, I often dream about alternate plots. The other thing I do, (and this sounds weird even to me) is that I dream that I'm physically reading the book. I'm often frustrated when I have difficulty turning the page to find out what happens next :) What's even more scary is that I used to do that when I was in college. I'd dream I was studying when I was asleep. Talk about overworking! > Plus, characters that don't have mothers are > tougher--not necessarily manlier, but moms take care of their children, > so a child that has to be self sufficient is going to be able to handle > being the heroine. Just my thoughts... Actually, what I found interesting about Ardath's comments was not that children who didn't have a conventional mother figure were self-sufficient, but that many self-sufficient characters had poor mother-figures (especially female characters). This implies that, according to these books, independence is usually created by a poor home life (this isn't true all the time, of course). A lot of this phenomenon can be explained away with "this is what makes an interesting character," rather than anything deeper, but the point remains an interesting one, nonetheless. ----- Someone wrote: > In Arrow's Fall, I think, [Elspeth] was already better than Talia, but > in the Winds trilogy everyone said she was only an indifferent fighter. > What happened? Actually, all this discussion about Elspeth reminded me to read the Winds trilogy again. I'm just about done with the second book. When is it mentioned that she is an indifferent fighter? It's clear that she's not as good as Kero or Alberich (which would be quite difficult), but I'm under the impression that she's still a top notch fighter and stategist. Text-evi alert! _Winds of Change_, Chapter 18: "Oh, I'm used to not being the best." Elspeth shook her hair back. 'Talia was better than me at classes, Jeri was better than me at swordsmanship, Mother is much prettier than me, Kero's better at strategy, Step-father at diplomacy, Skif at being sneaky--the only thing I was really good at was pottery, and I didn't deceive myself into thinking I was the best in the Kingdom.'" To me this doesn't imply that she's bad or indifferent at fighting, just not the very best. ----- Rhiannon wrote: >I've wondered too. It seems to me that while you can't directly lie mind-to-mind in Misty's world, you can be less than honest. Gwena, Elspeth's companion, is the perfect example of this. Of course, there's always the inconsistancy of when Gwena says at first that she's not a mage, and then later recants on that and admits that she is "mage-gifted." More text evidence! Chapter 8, _Winds of Change_: Elspeth: ":I don't suppose this means you're a mage, too--does it?: :Oh, no!: Gwena replied, her mind-voice bright with relief. :No, not at all! I can just tap into nodes, energy-lines, and fields." Then in chapter 12: Darkwind: "'So there are only four of us to work this seeking-spell.' :Five,: corrected a voice in his head. [...] 'Five?' he repeated. 'But lady, I did not know you were Mage-Gifted.'" [At this point Elspeth lays into Gwena about withholding information.] This appears to be a contradiction to me. Is being able to work spells different and being mage gifted different than being a Mage. Does anyone know of any convenient way to explain it away? The only thing I can think of is that Gwena is not able to initiate spells.. which requires a Mage, but that she is somehow able to work with them (more than just channeling energy which she already admitted to Elspeth) once they have been initiated. >::Rhiannon dances into the hall, her black silk dress swirling about her >legs. My mom got a book magazine called Chinaberry in the mail, and, as I had nothing better to do but shop for books *g*, I flipped through it. Never dreaming that I would find anything good in it because it seemed to be all children's books. Then I saw the Redwall series. I was already hooked on that, and it drew my eye. And right next to it on the page were these books called the Magic series... I read the little blurb about them, and I sweet-talked my mother into buying them for me. I had to lie about their content. If my grandma found out about those books, she'd drag me off to the nearest priest to have my head examined! So they came in the mail, I read them all in a day, and attacked my library for more. Since then I have bought everything with her name on it. I have the entire Valdemar series, both of the Knight of Ghost and Shadow books, most of the Bardic Choices and Voices books, and the Serrated Edge books. I have the Diana Tregarde books, and the Elvenblood series. The Sword and Sorceress books that the Tarma and Kethry stories appeared in. Tyger Burning Bright, Sacred Ground, Fiddler Fair. ALL OF THEM! *maniacal laughter* I buy so much that I keep the local Waldenbooks alive! So that's my story. Sad but true. A Misty virgin, maybe (I've only read the Mage Winds and Arrows of the Queen thus far. Don't kill me!!!!!) but a fanatic nevertheless. By the way, I'm a newbie. And I'm DRY! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! I think that's kind of interesting. I also think (yes, I know I haven't much to compare it to) it was one of the better written ones (I liked it a lot better than any of the Mage Winds books). So anyway, why you think so many of us like it or whatever the circumstances??? I think I just made no sense whatsoever.....but that's normal for me..sighhh.... And on 51-52 of MPromise, Van said to Randale, "...you'll have to buy us peace on one of our Borders with an alliance marriage - *exactly* hoe your grandmother bought us peace with Iftel." By the way, on page 177 of MPrice, did anyone else notice a lady Tayledras named Firesong? I was introduced when I got a gift certificate > to a bookstore I liked gryphons and the black gryphon caught my eye so i > bought it and loved it. Sometime in January, I was *dying* to find a new book to read, and one of my classmates let me borrow his copy of The Free Bards. I immediately fell madly in love with the books, and I've been reading everything I can get my hands on by Misty. Well, not Bard's Tale anymore, but that's 'cause I didn't like them as much. Someone else asked what made us keep reading Misty's books. I think it might have been that they made me feel more for the characters. Like, I might have cried over characters in books two or three times before, and gotten angry a few more, but, the way the Blues were treating Talia in AotQ did both, and I still get teary- eyed over 'Lendel's death and Van's attempted suicide. And the way the Bards broke Rune's arm made me furious. It's neat to read a book that makes you feel. Message-ID: <8161f1cb.35e39b73-+AT+-aol.com> Alright, I'll put my 2¢ into this now... Well, about four years ago, My ex-wife & I was in a book store looking for more books. I tend to devour books and needed a fix. There was a lady there that suggested all of Misty's books but only if I didn't mind homosexuality (sp???). I really had no problem with that so I told myself that I would buy the books eventually (I already had $50 worth of books in my hand by that point). But it took me 2 more years before I actually picked it up. At first, I couldn't figure out which book came first. Finally I bought the LHM series (I tend to by sets at a time) and was hooked from then. Next I bought BtS, & then the Arrows series. I loved the books so much, I have corrupted almost everyone I know into reading Misty hehe. I have most of the books now and I hope Misty never stops writing. I have a question for the list... Who was your favorite supporting character? Mine was Alberect (Sp???). I wish Misty would write a book just on his life. I think it would be great reading to see why he is the way he is. One more thing... I am a newbie to the list and well, I wanted to share other authors I like. Here goes... Robert Jordon... Joel Rosenberg... Raymond E. Feist... Tad Williams... David Eddings... Jennifer Robinson... Tanya Huff... The guy who wrote Tigiana (I don't remember his name right now)... Tracy Hickman & Margret Weis... Timothy Zann... R.A. Savatore (Sp???)... Ann McCaffrey... Tanith Lee... Michael Moorcock... Terry Brooks... Elizabeth Moon... and the list goes on and on... I have a hard time reading anything not fantasy based... could you tell? I have been reading as much fantasy and science fiction I could get my hands on since the tender age of nine, (boy was that a long time ago! *Brushes off cobwebs*) My world was largely an escapist one when I was young. Reality had a lot of screaming and yelling and put-downs and other such abuse in it, and I didn't care for it in the least. I lived in my head. And when I began to read Misty, not only did I find an author whose style I found, and still do find captivating, but I also found a kind of acceptance within myself that I could go on....I could survive.... Whew! Time to leave that line of thought...too many memories...... Welcome to all the newbies....don't worry, you might not all get soaked...afterall, I've been here a couple months and have yet to meet up with any magical water buckets... Do you mean the Di Tregarde books?  Those you should start with
Children of the Night and end with Jinx High.  I can't remember the
name of the middle book.  Help anyone?

There are so many things that I loved about that book, but here are
a few:    Talia is a wonderful character.  Many of us feel "different"
from every one else, left out, and wishing for a place to belong -
I know I did in High School.  So it is great to identify with a
character who doesn't fit in where she grew up, but found a
wonderful and accepting place to belong.

Hey for you "I want the books but I'm to broke types", have
you found ebay yet.  It is this auction site where people world-wide
can sell things.  There are usually several books by Misty that sell for
way less than cover price.
Just follow this link and enter Lackey into the search engine to see
what's there right now.  If you have any question, e-mail me privately.
