Its really NOT. Misty doesn't go into detail. She just mentions that it happened...and goes on. She's a ttaadd more explicit in LHM, but not very. To me its not very disturbing, and I am one of the most easily disgusted people you will ever meet. Also, keep in mind that rape always has been and always will be, the cheif way to break people. You can kill family and friends...but when you personally are violated....your personal self, your BODY.....it tends to wilt you. I know, I've seen it happen to a very very close and dear friend of mine. Anyways, she's not explict. It happens....and then the story goes on. But the characters take that with them throughout the rest of the story. -Kethryvis too many affiliations to list and too many forgotten. :) ---------- From: Rhiannon Shadowsong To: kethryvis-+AT+-reachme.net Subject: Re: Introduced to Misty Date: Wednesday, August 26, 1998 1:35 PM >By the way, I'm a newbie. So >anyway, >why you think so many of us like it or whatever the circumstances??? >I think I just made no sense whatsoever.....but that's normal for >me..sighhh.... That's normal for many of us around here. AotQ was Misty's first book, and I think that she did a great job. Her writi ng itself has improved, but her way of touching human feelingscouldn't improve much! The reason (IMHO) that so may of us love :HM or AotQ best, is because they really touch our emotions. Characters die, characters that we have come to love very much. While in the Winds, Storms and others, we aren't as attached to the ones that die, or the death isn't as emotional. See what I mean about not making sense? I think I repeated myself about six times, but I can't seem to clewan up the paragraph. Arg. >Do you mean the Di Tregarde books? Those you should start with >Children of the Night and end with Jinx High. I can't remember the >name of the middle book. Help anyone? Burnign Water I think. Not that I have it. I'm one of the always broke persons, and the local used bookstores rarely have Lackey. I can't decide if that is good or bad. I mean, if it isn't there, that means that there are Misty fans who refuse to sell their books. Or that there aren't any Misty fans in the area at all. One of the two. >I haven't read Arrows yet because as some people don't like erotica >etc, I don't like violent sex in books- I will read them eventually >but which pages should I be warned off will be nasty and in which >books? Misty really has a thing about non-consentual sex in her >books- in terms of realism that's her most jolting and disturbing >point most often brought up - IMHO. what do y'all think? I never really found it disturbing--but then, I have cable. Seriously, there really isn't anything to worry about in Arrows. Misty just kinda says it, on pg 183 (paperback) it just says what happened. A total of 2 sentences just saying that it was brutal. And as for the rape subject in general--well, like I said, I didn't find it disturbing. But I had a very un-sheltered childhood. Growig up in the ghetto, reality rears its ugly head pretty quick. Nothing ever happened to me, but I had friends who had it happen to them. Anyway, back to the subject--there isn't a whole lot of rape or anything, just in LHM and AotQ. I think. No incidents besides those stand out in my mind, at any rate. ><think so...if she wanted in in one volume, it would probably be in >one.>> It is. It's one book. Since she has it partitioned as Book One >and Book Two, I wondered if she meant for it to be published as two >seperate books. Sorry. I meant exactly the opposite of what I said. My brain must have been very fried last night. I meant that if she wanted it in *two*, it would be that way. And the Book Two thing isn't really enough of a break to make it 2 books. If you look at, say, Vows and Honor, those are rather distinct plots. They aren't even really hinged on each other as far as background goes. BtS on the other hand, requires reading the first part to really understand the second. So it should probably be one volume, just the way it is. I think that's it. You know, I realized I have to clarify stuff I said a lot. I need to edit my posts more often than I do. Or else I just don't make sense. ::Hands a towel to Daine:: My way of making up for the splooshing. Talia is raped but there's no violent description of it, seeing as how her torture wqas very bad in of itself. How I got into Misty: A week before xmas I raided the cellar looking for the books I knew my parents had hidden there. I found a Diversity of Dragons by Anne McCaffrey and from there proceded to some of the books that were mentioned. And thus I found Elevenbane, and then by mistake I picked up the first Arrows book at the library and since I've been addicted Why keep reading her stories? Well, this is rather strange but I've been diagnosed as a diabetic for 8 years now and my insulin shots still hurt from time to time. I really related to Talia's lonliness and wanted to immitate her bravery, and so suffered the pain without tears. That's one reason: her stories helped me to become who I am no in a roundabout way. Other books I like: Anne McCaffrey definitely :) And Tolkein, Misty (a given) and also lately the Ender's game series by Orson Scott Card ( I recommend this to all those out there who feel isolated or alone for any reason!). I bought Ship of Magic by Robin Hobb but haven't read it yet. Ok enough for now. Actually, the priesthood of what I assumed to be the Lord and Lady were mentioned in LHM when father leren was exposed and they searched the priesthood for other infiltrations. So we know that they did at least *have* one, even if they don't come into the story much. I think that the reason they seem less significant is because there are main characters closely related to the other religions: Tarma is sworn to the StarEyed, Karal is a priest of Vkandis, and it seems like there were some other characters mentioned more than once for other theologies. There just weren't any people in the books who would quote from whatever holy book they had, etc. ********** And as to how we were introduced to Misty, my aunt sent all three books in the HoV trilogy several years ago, and I read them and loved them. Then, later, I noticed that in the back it said that there was another series after it (the mage winds), and I searched far and wide until I found it. After that, of course, I was hooked for life.:) I do wish, though, that I had read them in the order that she wrote them. I think LHM would have been even better, if that's possible, if I hadn't read the storms books first and known some things about Van. I *know* BTS would have been better beacause I already knew Kero was chosen and everything, but I still loved all of them. =) Fluffy chocolate sheep to all. :) Zhai'helleva, Winddancer ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Living in a world others think is fantasy is not denying the existance of their reality; it's simply living in a reality of your own." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Visit my dwelling on the internet at http://members.tripod.com/~Windblade/index.html. Even if he did deserve what happened to him because of his vanity, I still felt really bad for him. Well, the point of this rambling paragraph is to say that I do empathize with most of Misty's characters, even in the more recent books. That's what has kept me reading her books for the past year. The characters are always to me so vivid, and I love the fact that the books are just as much character-based as action-based. And I really like the point-of-view changes that are more common in her recent books, because I like seeing what each character thinks about a certain situation as opposed to what another character thinks. Besides this, I just wanted to say hi to Aoife, because I live in north Texas, too. Just north of Dallas, to be more exact. The only things even mildly disturbing about the books are the facts that misty provides. You know, the ones found in "Burning Water"? right down to the grisly corn rituals. so that's the only one really horrifying about the books, since it is so obviously real. There was nothing really scary in either JH or CotN... (i really hated the covers, though... *G*) yeah, well enough rambling from me.. *slinks back to lurkdom with a few giggle bubbles trailing behind her.* ( ) Wind to thy Wings ) ( Shadowblade mindmate to Raul <==+==> Elven archer-mage of Fairgrove >>~~~~~> | | High Priestess of the Goddess of the Elves | | High Priestess of OOPS | | Grand Dame of the Order of the Namers | | Singer of Fire - Alto Section | | Member of the Order of Unsung Heroes (Eldan, Eric, and Terenil!) | | Member of the Mistic Circle | | Visit my Homepage ~> | | http://members.tripod.com/~Shadowblade \/ "I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it!" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Aug 1998 16:05:09 +0100 From: "Alexia/Sabrina" To: "misty" Subject: Up coming books Message-ID: <029c01bdd1cc$19d70f20$207228c3-+AT+-i.casale> On the andre norton page = http://andre-norton.org/ in the section of upcoming books there are two entries exactly as follows: ELVENBORN with Mercedes Lackey Sequel to Elvenblood. I just joined the list last night, so I thought I would tell you where I'm coming from. My name is Kara. I'm 23, from MD. My life is reading and puzzles. I raise budgerigars, and am working on a few writing projects. My first Lackey book was The Fire Rose, after which I became hooked. Now I'm in the middle of The Black Gryphon. I'm happy to meet all of you! Umm. I don't know if the Fairgrove (look > for FireWurm), Fairgrove!?!?! WOHOO! What more could you ask for? Tuatha de Danan and Fast Cars!!! Heheh. Now why do I like SERRATED Edge so much again?? Ok, Im looking for Firewurm!! If He/She sees me first (Im the big black rat wearing the red shawl) PLEEEEZE let me know how I join. Ill walk through the Mists blind-folded and wearing a "come eat me" magickal item if I have to!!! PS: Someone also asked where I got my sigs. Everywhere!!! Anything that strikes my fancy or I think makes an interesting commentary on this thing called life. Sometimes music hits me and Ill scramble to find the lyric that sent the "jee whilickers" down my back. BTW, the ALOOFF in my sig is an affliation from the ST Voyager mailing list. Not Misty. Though I accept any rat with open arms. ObMisty: Alright Ill tell ya how I got lost in Misty. You see a very very very long time ago, this very very very very dear friend of mine (she now shares part of a brain with me and all of my heart) practically shoved Vanyel Ashcevron (sp?!) down my throat with the polite encouragement of "Here read this. Youll like it." Now, this frightened me. This girl had, in a horrifically short span of time come to know me so well she was reading my mind rather well ( and I have excellent shields). She was responsible for turning me into a Trekker ( I think it took only her flashing the cover of an ST novel in my face.) So I opended the book with great trepidation. Sadly (yeah right!) I was hooked almost instantly. I was amazed at the description and feelings that this lady with the funny name could manage to smash into a tiny little paperback!! My God she was amazing!!! My dreams were haunted with an entire HAVEN of mindspeaking Horses for weeks afterward. I devoured the trilogy, licked my fingers and looked around for more. Ooooo, did I ever get more!! Just never fast enough. LOL She has managed to color my writing style and right now Id give anything to 'prentice with Larry Dixon!!! LOL So thats how I got into Misty, or rather Misty got into ME.
