That'ts not coldness...that's concern. Van is so loveable, I think, because he is so vulnerable. He loves his family and friends and is worried about them. He doesn't want anything to happen to them because of him. I think in a lot of ways he's feeling guilty for having the power that he has. He's too cold. ******* SPOILER FOR MAGIC's PRICE ***** I did not find him so.... He is very private, but in later books, especially Winds of Fury, you see him as a ghost, and he is very warm and open. Its just that while he was alive, he avoided letting people get too close.... his theory about those close to him getting hurt and all. Also, he is a classicly tragic character. If anyone here has studied Greek or Shakespearean drama, Magic's Price as the catharsis thingie. For those who don't know, catharsis is when your emotions build up and you think you're going to explode, but instead of a ragin flood, you end up with a gentle stream of purified emotion. Like when you think you can't take it any longer, Yfandes says she'll stand with Van, but instead of having a hysterical fit, you weep softly. The hystaerical fit comes later, when it's three AM and you're reading the songs in the back and see "Magic's Price" and it takes you an hour because your eyes are so blurred you can't read the page...nevermind. (And the other person I know that has done this can't be on the list...pity her) *************************************** OK, its safe now. Hmm...cover art... I love TLHM covers...all are very moving. I like the ones done by Jody LEe (heck, I like all her cover art, especially the one for Mickey Zucker Reichart's _Nightfall_) I don't like HoV covers. The make me cring. I especially hate it when I'm reading them and someone comes up to me and makes a snotty remark about romance novels just because the covers are pink and purple...and when my poor brother reads them at school... And he's a freshman. What a BAD combination, especially in my ghetto school. Just a note of trivia: If you go to a competition, everyone acts like you'r4e packing. Hee. And people that ask for directions get "Don't go there! Ohmigod! You're going to teach there? Wear a bullet proof vest! They have knives, and guns and..." Yeah. Whatever. There are times when I don't like BHS much, but i have never once been attacked with a weapon. I once had a knife at school, but that was an accident...I had put it in my back pack and forgotten to take it out. I'm sooo dangerous. Is it me or >does that seem like something Urtho would do to guide people? It is >harmless, but it really makes people think. As powerful as Urtho was a >spell he melded into a structure could have easily survived (example the >permanent gates) What do all of you think? This subject came up over at the Dominion some time ago. IIRC, we decided that it couldn't be, because the tower was in the wrong place for where Urtho's originally was supposed to be. IIRC, Urtho placed his first tower either to the west or to the north and Keth's tower is to the south of the Dorisha Plains As always, I could be extremely mistaken, and they took the post off of the Dominion BBoard because no one had posted to it in awhile, so I can't even go back and check that. Anyway, back to lurkerdom, work, and, oh, welcome all newbies! Amber, who is also known as Stasia _____________________________________________________________________ "What is a friend? [and yes, thank you, i HAVE been sploshed in my time!] i just seem to do more lurking than posting. especially since school has started again. The warrior makes herself comfortable before explaining the reason for her visit. i couldnt let this thread go by without taking at least one stab at it. there has been commentary along the lines of [yes i have a quick delete finger...but if i didnt i would never get through all the mail!] 'Misty uses alot of rape'. and yes, i suppose in one sense she does. tho i think she does a wonderful job in making it real without getting into all the gory details. i think that when she depicts the plights of children and ppl in this world [esp. teens] who have had hard upbringings or some such thing. esp. i see this in the SERRAted Edge series. she uses the urban fantasy setting to show the plight of many young ppl in this world and these days. Infact in some of the backs of the SERRAted Edge books she has put an Author's Note saying something to the effect of "If you are in trouble and need help, call..." and giving a hotline for that. i think some of that is one way in which her fans rlly get to see Misty's heart...even tho [as far as i know] she doesnt have children, she rlly has a heart for the kids who have gone through alot...including rape, abuse in other forms, and neglect. as unsavory as all of this is i think it was MEANT to be disturbing so that some ppl can have wake up calls about what rlly goes on in their cities, under their noses. again, this is JMHO and i dont mean to bother anyone. == God bless and keep you!!
