Young Adults section, looking for books to take on my vacation, when I saw a huge, new hardcover book with a beautiful picture of a girl on a glistening white horse on the front. It was Queen's Own, the compilation of the three AotQ novels. I took it on my vacation and could not put it down. I remember being in my room at two o'clock in the morning, reading the last pages of Arrow's Fall with tears pouring down my face. I finished it, closed the book, wiped my face, opened it, and started it all over again. Hey, did anyone know that they speak Spanish in Valdemar? Just kidding, but I found this interesting. In By the Sword, page 276 (DAW paperback edition), Eldan says to Ratha (yes, Textevd coming up!): ":Hola, hayburner!: :Yes, oh, hairless ape?: Ratha had seen an animal trainer..." But I fell in love with the whole Serrated Edge series and went into the series with Eric Banyon (Which I can't remember off of the top of my head...) I was, for some reason, very resistent to reading the Valdemar series (can some one explain why it is referred to as Velgarth unless this is a topic that everyone is tired of and is asked often in which case I'll stay in the dark) Yes I'm aware I'm rambling which only makes it worse, believe me. Also....I was just rereading BtS and Tarma said: (p.113) "This land is too rocky to make good farmland; the tenants barely managed to make ends meet." The Imperial ancestors were mercenaries (Storms) and it doesn't really matter which side they were on in that case, because they probably weren't considered a part of either. Ma'ar never bothered to figure out how, I don't think, because goodness knows he could have--he took most of Urtho's other stuff. Falconsbane seemed really excited to see one, though, so maybe he just couldn't. Also, whatever one can discover, others can. Belkram peered at him through the darkness. "No," he said, "you haven't turned into a Calishite, and I can't say I've noticed you oiling your hide and perfuming your gold coins these last few summers." Itharr sighed theatrically. "No? And we do. That's amazing! I doubt there's a single public school in the U.S. that's *that* liberal. We had some fairly strict clothing rules in my school (no shorts unless the temperature dictated otherwise, and then they had to be a certain number of inches from the knees; no sleeveless shirts; etc., etc., etc.) and that was 10 years ago. I've heard it's only gotten worse since then, with schools banning any shirts with words on them, and an increasing number of schools going with uniforms. I graduated in 1995. We were the first class EVER to have an interracial prom. EVERY year before the school had supported the prom as long as each race was in their OWN prom. My class banded together and changed it, made history in our little town. How pathetic eh? It took till the 90's for a small town in Tennessee to DeSegregate the Senior Prom? Perfect for the autumn. Now, that is a short answer. The Real Topics: I want to mention that I love Misty's ability to set the mood in a novel. Such as in Storm Warning, where Karal and Rubrik are sitting in the inn by the window listening to the fire crackle and the rain pattering on the roof. You can almost feel like you are there experiencing the moment. I really identified with Karal's mention of how much he loves a storm. When we have a storm I turn out all of the light and open the windows (well, at least to the screens, anyway). Then I light candles and breathe deeply of the wind. So I personally loved this moment of storm conversation. I felt suddenly cozy. BTW, Rubrik is a fascinating character, isn't he? I think if I were to cast him in a film, I would pick Rutger Hauer. A marvelous, sexy, mysterious actor with mesmerizing eyes. Don't anyone sploosh me, please, but I pictured Amberdrake in The Black Gryphon as being kind of Richard Gere-like. I personally don't like Richard Gere that much, but the drawing in the book looked very much like him. Well, I will sit back now and wait to be splooshed...or, at the very least, pelted with rocks and garbage. I know, I've seen it happen to a very very close and dear friend of mine. Okay, If you don't like that, then there's a lot you could miss. That is a big something that pops up again and again in all kinds of literature. I personally don't have a problem with reading it, but friends of mine do. I would reccomend that you stay away from Vows and Honor. It occours in both of those books. ***** Brynn wrote: Robin McKinnly? they both remind me of Misty, in different ways. i don't know why. i'm tired. don't ask. I LOVE Robin McKinnely!!!! Her book _The Blue Sword_ is my favorite! (Outside of Misty). I haven't read her book with the word 'Deer' in the title. Can anyone remind me what book that is? ***** Brynn wrote again: bout the "references to gods/esses", Tarma, as some have mentioned, refers to the Star-eyed, and *some times* to some of the other gods of that religion. remember, the "Star Eyed religion" *isn't* monotheistical (-sp?). so that means that there are refrences to multi-god/ess religions. I think (IMHO) that Misty gets a lot of her religious personages from Celtic Mythology. If anyone has read Katherine Kerr's novels about Deverry and the Westlands, then you would see a huge resemblance to the Goddess of the Moon in her world. That series is the most accurate Celtic series that I've come across. BTW...Can anyone pronounce those words? ***** Thea wrote: Bowing, Thea turns to everyone watching.
