I'm rather intrigued by the thought that Misty may have done some thinking about the mage wars even when she was writing _AFall_. After all, I don't even think she mentions the Dhorisha Shina'a until after HoV. Anybody recall an HoV reference to Dhorisha (which is the major physical manifestation of the wars). ******************* "Question time, In Black Gryphon, Amberdrake is considered to be a fairly powerful healer... But in Silver Gryphon, he does not seem to have much in the way of healing power." (said Amy) In _BG_ the reason Drake doesn't typically heal is that his empathy is so strong. There is discussion of him getting sick when he was away at school before Ma'ar came, remembering his teachers giving him treatments for illnesses he didn't have, because they didn't believe in empathic gifts. Also, in _AFall_ Talia mentions that bone healing can't be speeded. And, recall, Skan DID spend some time recuperating (he can't lie down properly until Tamsin and Cinnabar come in to do an additional healing) in the tent with dear old (stubborn, sly) Aubri. So, perhaps the ish is that what was needed in _SG_, which he couldn't provide, was bone healing. Whaddaya'all think? **************** Jennifer M. Shultz started a thread about why we love Vanyel. I've always responded to those moments when the vulnerable, emotional Van broke through the protective barriers of competant aloofness. I want to thank those of you who recommended the list and those who will be contributing. As for rarely discussed books, I wonder if anyone here enjoyed The Fire Rose? I was absolutely in love with it! And although the magic was different from what you normally see in her books, the plot was interesting. I liked the character of Rose. She had a lot of backbone, something you don't see a lot of in fiction when it comes to young, single women. Something that perplexed me about this book to the end was that Jason remained a hybrid even through the ending. He and Rose were apparently able to overcome this and to marry anyway. My best guess would be a mistake, because the healers aren't affected by the storms (the healers told Tremane that in the storms) because it isn't based on magical energy. The only way it would have is if he had a small gift and powered it the way that Van did...with node energy. Then it would be a possibility. Also i like > how Kethry got back at her "demon" It shows how strong women can be in > the face of something so terible. Soooo... I don find it disturbing. > even with my backround. I'm of two minds of the whole rape-in-Misty's-writing. She used rape as a literary tool a lot in her early writing (Arrows, LHM, and K+T stories), but has eased away from it in more recent writings (Mage and Storms). Winds referred to it as a major component of Falconsbane's torture methods, but didn't show it directly. When Misty has used rape, I think she's pretty much done it as tastefully as rape can be written, and has gone at least a little into the psychological pain which follows a rape victim long after the physical effects are gone. And so for that, she's done a very good job. It's also important that she pointed out in LHM that men are not always just the perpetrators of rape, but that they can also be the victims. However, I think there is a line between being informative about rape and its effects and using rape merely for shock value which only serves to desensitize people. For instance, I found the most disturbing part of the movie "Pulp Fiction" to be the male rape scene. The feeling of the scene was weird and surreal and even somehow funny, but the actual content is just sickening if you think about it. The rape was pretty much gratuitous and the movie wouldn't have suffered at all had the victims managed to escape before the rape. ---- Date: Sun, 30 Aug 1998 20:33:04 +0100 (BST) From: Rhiannon Shadowsong > I wish my schoool were that open minded. In fact, I think it's the best thing she's written in a really long time.. it was just so fresh and lively and a joy to read. And I did appreciate the fact that it wasn't a "perfect" ending. The hero didn't change back into a dashing handsome figure. However, I do have one question. I brought that up a while back, and I think the answer (that we agreed on, anyways) was that Jason's beastly nature would be calmed/supressed by not only Rose's calming influence but Master Pao's potions, but also at the end, it has Rose thinking that in the end, that Jason had a good heart was all that really mattered. And I loved the Fire Rose. Then again, I love most urban fantasy. Fav. books in that genre? 'War For the Oaks' by Emma Bull, (Hi Pooka!!) and 'Dreams Underfoot' by Charles de Lint (a Canuck, too!) Well, where I go weird socks are permitted; not only do I wear a pair with frogs on it, but my fav. pair are bright rainbow striped socks. ;P And while no one wears PJs, it would be acceptable here. Yes, I do live in Canada. Alberta, to be exact. In the capitol. The only things we aren't allowed to wear are tees with swears or such on them and skirts too short to sit down in. We have several ppl who have wild hair colors (I was thinking of dying my hair blue but couldn't find the dye in time for the concert) and several more who have multiple peircings. BTW, just because, I do NOT have red hair. I'm a Canadian teen with dark brown hair, hazel eyes and a roman nose to top it all off. (I blame me Mum.) ;P And now for something completely different. > As I carefully watch for buckets of water appearing magically out of the > sky, Reginabean leaves the list in hopes of remaining dry. If you wish to add your name to it, you can e-mail me at wintershard-+AT+-geocities.com At the beginning of every month, or close to it, I'll post a reminder to the Misty list regarding the birthdays that we do have, and anyone that is interested can e-mail me privately for it (so as not to clog up the ML). I'm not going to be able to send any list out this month, as it is my first time doing so, but you are all invited to add your names to it; the more the merrier, you know ;). Babbling alaert! Ack. > Actually, there was plenty of time. Ma'ar took over the body of a descendant of his when person probably reached puberty. Also, when Ma'ar took over person, he would age body to adult using magic. Although, I personally believe that Krebain was Leareth's stooge and not an incarnation of Ma'ar, I do believe it could be possible time wise. ****************************************************************** About hair color, mine is dark brown. When I spend alot of time in the sun, mine gets auburn highlights.. Because of my very fair complexion (us Southern Belles must keep up our magnolia white skin....heheheh...) I burn more than tan and therefor do not get out in the sun that much. ******************************************************************* Fluff---Today is my great-niece's 1st birthday. We had a party (cake and ice cream etc...) I got to take her for her doctor's appt (4 shots and oral polio vaccine....jeez I'm glad that's over with) Oh well, it's been lovely but I must scream now... Hope everyone is well...... Message-ID: <19980901040440.19329.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> Heyla all!! Yesterday I returned to my computer to find I had been unsubscribed from the misty list! And I didn't even send an unsub 'mail! How Rude!! But anyway, jumpy little me is back hopefully to stay but unfortunately because I've been swamped with assesments, assignments, tests and exams recently I hadn't read my 'mail for a long while so I have missed about the last two, possibly three weeks of post (I can't remember exactly) but I'll get back into it in the next couple of days (though I'm dreading heading to the dusty old archives, that place gives me hayfever :) ). Anyway, to whomever it was that wrote about the ending of "Fire Rose", thank you very much :( ! I am just finishing of "The Celebration of Lammas Night" after reading "Jinx High" finally and "Fire Rose" is just sitting there waiting for me to pick it up and now you've gone and spoiled it!!! Oh well, I never was anygood at holding a grudge :) ! You're forgiven. You probably didn't spoil it much anyway, just that now I know 'the beast' character stays that way, but I"ll live on. Anyway, enough of my ramblings, as I just said, I have recently finished "Jinx High" and I am sad to say that I was quite disappointed with it. Even though it was interesting while I was reading it, there wasn't anything in it that catched and stays in my mind like the rest of her books that I have read. Fortunately I was able to put that reading to good use as I had to do a report on a book of my choosing about the horror genre and that book is classified as a horror book in my school library so ......anyway, I'll stop my ramblings. Guess what fellow sibs! My little home town, (which isn't so little and isn't quite a 'town') apparently made the world news recently because we had some flooding and we haven't had flooding for at least twenty years (or so I've been told, I can't quite tell since I haven't been here that long). Well yes thats a smidgin of my over exaggerated happiness/bounciness/hyperactiveness expressed (the Gods help those who get in my way when I'm in this mood! :) ) By the way, if there is anyone who is a curious little bever like me and watches the world news (or is just a curious little bever) it was Wollongong, NSW, Australia that I was rambling about. Well I must go, my chemistry studies await me to drag me back down to something more like soberness and Trian is getting restless. :Ky looks over at Trian who has been waiting patiently for the bright eyed girls' jibbering to stop and is greeted with a beckoning tap of hoof from the loyal companion. Ky looks back to her sibs and flashes a warm smile to all before mounting her steed in a flourish of deep green velvet and disappearing. Everyone looks around perplexed at what just happened, the memory quickly fading and everyone thinks they hear a whisper.....: Zhai'helleva ! Bright smiles (and sheepish grins) to all! *************************************** * Kyblade (the extreemly silly) * * & Trian (the ever patient) * *************************************** ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Sep 1998 10:15:19 +0100 (BST) From: troll-+AT+-netcomuk.co.uk To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Fluff: Birthday list Message-ID: <19989110197318467-+AT+-netcomuk.co.uk> On 09/01/98 04:52:31 Wintershard wrote: > >For all and everyone who wishes to join in, I am keeping a list of the birthdays of list members :). Hard to think of them as 'celebrating' anything, no? :) I get the impression they just associated birthdays with increased responsibility/duty rather than enjoyment(re near the very start of AotQ, Talia being told that because she's coming up to 13 it's time for her to marry).
