He is so*real*~shivers~it gives me goose bumbs. When I read it several years ago, I could not put it down. Vanyel has so much integrity and honor, where when he first started out he was a *peacock* as Yfandes put it. Isn't it interesting how the Compainions complement their choosens? Look at Yfandes, a mothering type, and Vanyel, who needed a *mother figure*. Then there is Talia who was used to Male domination, and Rolan, a very commanding male compainion. Kris who really did not have time for women, had Tantris(?) who was a male compainion that teased like an older brother.....the list goes on. I feel that compainions help to *Fill* out the personality of their chosen. Is there an order for Gyrphon Healers? I am a medical person, who would love to help heal Gryphons......Please~~ ************************************** Hopefully someone will give me a nice warm fuzzy towel to cuddle up with while I put my odd collection of things away. ************************************** == Dragonchilde Mi'lynn Listee for Nathaniel Keeper of Anita's Knives, Sheaths, Excutioner Bags, and Zombie Bag Ultimate Misty FAN, and Gryphon Healer in training "Don't cry over spilt milk, it makes it salty for the cats" _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? For some odd reason, I stopped receiving messages from this list for about two weeks, and then suddenly recieved a flood of mail (about 600 messages, to be exact). Let me apologize in advance for going back to some extremely old threads, as well as the newer ones. First of all, I haven't really participated much in this list until now, so I think a formal introduction is in order. My name is Julia, I live in California and I'm fifteen years old. I got introduced to fantasy in general and Mercedes Lackey in particular about 6-8 months ago, and I haven't been able to rip myself free from the Sci-fi/fantasy sections at the bookstore yet. I find that a large percentage of my income is going to new books at the moment. Anyway, besides reading my major interests are ice skating, singing (soprano), acting, reading...oh yeah, mentioned that. Well, it deserves a second listing. I like to write too, although it is something I have precious little talent in. Also, as I am a self-proclaimed newbie, I await my inevitable splooshing with no small amount of trepidation :) . Rhiannon Shadowsong - I read your "rant" thing, among hundreds of other messages. I apparently never got the original letter which sparked your fury (remind me never to get on your bad side :) ), but from what I read, you gave that pompous, self-absorbed narcissist the dressing-down he richly deserved. My high school needs more intellectuals like you. No horses, despite a large amount of whining and begging. I have been obsessed with horses ever since I discovered carousels when I was two. Unfortunately, ice skating and horseback riding are the two most expensive sports on earth, and my family can only afford one of them. As for other animals, I have two cats and a dog. <> Tell me about it. This society is so immersed in prejudices concerning age and accumulated wisdom. In fact, I have a bigger problem than most, because most people look at my height (5'3") and automatically assume I'm in middle school . You can imagine how much respect I get. Someone brought up the subject of how we got introduced to Misty books. I am part of a small but thriving book-trade chain at my school with a couple of friends. Basically how it works is every week or so one of us will show up with a shoebox (or some other carrying device) filled with books that we've read and recommend. This box gets passed to friend #1, who finishes the books, adds her personal critiques, and passes it on to the next link in the chain (myself). I found Storm Breaking at the bottom of one of the aforesaid boxes, and promptly ran out and spent an insane amount of money on the other Misty books. I now wait with baited breath for OwlSight. <> So many people (especially in high school) think of reading as a chore to be endured. I can't imagine how much free time I spend lost in a good book. When I tell people my own age that I like to read, you'd think I told them that my mother runs an armadillo farm. Oh well, I guess it's their loss. <> Heaven forbid that Misty books ever become a TV show - I would be glued to the set. Actually, I would only be glued to the set if the series somewhat resembled the books. I'd say, knowing Hollywood, the chances would be slim to none. They'd probably butcher the books just enough that they wouldn't have to pay royalties on it. As for movies, as someone else pointed out - <> Matilda was basically a desecration to Roald Dahl's original story. If I hadn't read, reread, and thoroughly enjoyed the book long before I ever saw the movie, I would religiously avoid reading it for the rest of my life. <> Please tell this poor, ignorant listsib what Dragoncon is. Now for my question. Is it just me, or does anyone else think that Elspeth is a tad rude to Gwena most of the time? I don't see why Gwena puts up with it. Also, has anyone out there read Robert Jordan books? I picked up one in a bookstore (Crown of Swords) only to discover that it was the last book in a seven-book series. I hadn't a single clue what was going on. Is it worth my time (and precious money) to try the first in the series? After exhausting Mercedes Lackey, I'm desperately floundering around for a new author. Speaking of Misty, what can anyone tell me about the Serrated Edge books? I read the entire Velgarth series and (needless to say) enjoyed it immensely. I'm now debating whether to give Serrated Edge a try. I'm afraid that after Velgarth, I would always be comparing the two series and I would be disappointed. I haven't read many books that mix the '90s and fantasy, but it seems to me that it kind of defeats the purpose of fantasy books. Someone please give me a quick review of Serrated Edge. This is the last topic - I promise. How did you all come up with these wonderfully detailed personas? Can it just be anything you happen to dream up? Oh yeah, can someone explain the sheep-thing to me? It has me confused to no end. For those of you who are still with me (I'm imagining a grand crowd of two), thank you for putting up with my mindless babble. :) ~Julia~ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Sep 1998 16:16:40 -0700 From: "Kethryvis" To: Subject: Owlsight, hair, etc. etc. Message-ID: <19980902232612150.AAA138-+AT+-Shipping-1.it.inreach.com> Gryphon healers...wasn't it troin'din or something like that? Actually there is going to be a NEW book out very soon called The Path Of Daggers. I got to meet Jordan some time ago and all he would say is that the series could reach TEN books, No one knows for sure and Jordan isnt saying apparently. Suits me though! As long as they stay on their current level of excellence. The Light Bless You!! > on. Is it worth my time (and precious money) to try the first in the > series? Id recommend it to anyone whos read any of Mistys Urban Fantasy. Um, Jennifer Robins (??) Tiger and Del Books are awesome (they start with Sword Dancer I believe) Im sure some of the other sibs will pick up from here. > Serrated Edge > books? The Serrated Edge and Bedlams Bard are two of her Urban Fantasys the other being The Diana Tregarde Mysteries. All three are really good. They take place in the "modern world" filled with magick, elves, demons, and many other unusual characters. > This is the last topic - I promise. My persona comes from The Secret Of NIMH *the little black rat bows, groaning slightly as aged bones pop and complain* for instance. The weird names and such you might see in the sig lines are affiliations and can be found in the...what was it called? Newbie fest? I dont have the URL for that though. Im sure a Councilor will be happy to give it to you. > Oh yeah, can someone explain the sheep-thing to me? It has me > confused to no end. No prob. Just thought Id make you welcome. *little black rats eyes bug out at SOMETHING behind the newbie* Hmmm, is that who I think it is materializing behind you?? *the little black rat scurres quickly into hiding snickering all the way* ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Sep 1998 17:04:32 -0700 From: "Kethryvis" To: Subject: Elspeth and Gwena, SERRAted edge, and other ramblings Message-ID: <19980903001401886.AAA139-+AT+-Shipping-1.it.inreach.com> Why is Elspeth rude to Gwena? I was thinking about this myself as I was reading the Winds books again, as I am doing now..and it hit me Now that I'm closer to Elspeth's age than I was when I first read the books, I realized how much I hate being cosseted and pushed towards something. Remember, Elspeth was PREDESTINED to be the first of the "re-born" Hearald-Mages. Gwena was a Grove-born Companion for that specific purpose. And right in the middle of their trek to Kero's uncle for Elspeth's training ...she realized she was being herded towards something and she decided that she DID NOT LIKE IT. Not one bit. And Gwena was in on it, and wouldn't share anything with Elspeth. SO...say you're 26. You're the Heir to the Throne. You've had people pushing you around your entire life to do this, do that, be here, be there, act this way, etc.... you FINALLY get ready to get out on your own and now your closest companion and dear friend is pushing you around now! 'Specially when you hate being pre-destined without your knowledge and consent. :) Van does say something about that when they all meet up in the Forest of Sorrows...about how Gwena is Grove-born and doesn't have the experience of being human behind her to help her out. Gwena makes a lot of mistakes. Think about it..Elspeth was what, 14 when she was Chosen? She's 26 now...she's older than her own Companion! **She** has more experience living out in the "Real World" than Gwena ever had. Its like being bossed around by your younger sister. So do you blame her? BUT I've noticed more that Elspeth is "mellowing out" in her old age...she and Gwena stopped fighting so much after Elspeth got her training from the Hawkbrothers and Gwena gave in to Elspeth's not wanting to be ruled by Destiny. Did that all make sense? I hope so. :) Ramblings from someone who's trying not to admit that she's supposed to be working.... ;) SERRAted edge are...okay. I really liked a few of them...I'd go for it. I don't think you'll do too much comparison...I sure didn't. :) I *do* suggest reading _If I Pay Thee not in Gold_ , _The Fire Rose_ , and any of the Di Tregarde books. Anyways....25 min left of my work day...I guess I should get something done. :) -Keth ---------- From: carolyn dobervich To: kethryvis-+AT+-reachme.net Subject: Heyla all/various questions/mindless babble Date: Wednesday, September 02, 1998 4:33 PM Hi everyone!! :) ~Julia~ ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 1706 **********************************
