Remember, the victim(s) in this scene were trying to kill each other. When Butch goes back to rescue the other guy after escaping, they decide to make a peace deal. This is important to the plot. Ma'ar only wants descendants with Adept potential, so that may also be a factor. Rainbow (cf-+AT+-leightons.demon.co.uk) wrote: > I'm /still/ confused over Van and his Healing Gift... Someone posted here in the distant past that when Misty was asked this at a convention, she said something like, "Vanyel got an upgrade. Vanyel 2.0." > Oh yes... What does Earth-Magic come under? If Van had /all/ his > Channels (excepting Healing) openned, then wouldn't he have, like the > Tayledras earth-Magic? I think there are several different forms of power that could be called "earth magic". The Tayledras Healing Adepts have a unique power which allows them to heal the land. This is, in my interpretation, a direct result of their pact with the Star-Eyed Goddess who charged them with the healing of the land. In Hardorn (and probably other places -- this is hinted at, at least), the royal family has a special connection to the land which allows them to receive information about problems. I don't think this gives them any power to make changes, though, and it definitely seems to be different from the Tayledras Healing Adepts. Both of these (and more) seem to be different from the Valdemaran mind-magic, which is what Misty seems to be referring to when she uses the word "channels" in Vanyel's context. The Valdemaran mind-magic encompasses Farsight, Mindspeech, Fetching, Firestarting, etc., but doesn't seem to have any component which qualifies as earth magic. Sorry, that one's my fault. I brought it up in one of my lame ObMisty comments. It's a "character" in Dan Simmons' "Hyperion" books. It's 10 feet tall, completely covered with razor-sharp metal spikes, has four arms, and is of course inhumanly strong. It never speaks, and never actually walks; rather, it just "materializes" wherever it wants to be. It's rather deadly. (There, that wasn't too spoily....) The northwest of Valedmar is the Pelagir(is?) Hills, and is one of the areas where the Tayledras haven't yet cleaned up the leftovers from the mage wars. I actually like a lot of Larry's interior drawings. Not all of them though. I didn't like the way he drew Darkwind and Elspeth for the Mage Storms. What I really like, though, were his drawings of Karal, Rubrik, Natoli, An'desha, Altra, Florian, etc. But most of those I only liked in Storm Warning. I though An'desha and Firesong looked terrible in Storm Breaking, no offence really meant to Mr. Dixon. Hmmm. And I liked Solaris in Storm Rising. The thing I've found is that when he draws characters they never seem to look the same from one book to the next. anyone else notice that? On making the male characters look like himself, that's a problem common to a lot of artists. I draw, not on that level, surely, but I do draw. Most of my women look like me, and even more look like me with a few changes (hair length, color of eyes, height). As for Gwena and Elspeth, I'd be tempted to be a lot ruder than Elspeth ever is. I'm a college student and am now being pushed into a career path that I want, but the feeling of being pushed almost makes me change my mind at times. If it were anyone but my parents pushing me, I'd probably do the same thing Elspeth's doing to Gwena. sheep shaped pillows to everyone . . . And no fighting with them!
