Well, I just wanted to say something on the whole RPing and copyright issue. Kethryveris and Yvonne have both mentioned that they don't see the reason for copyrights. And someone (Brenna?) wrote a nice piece explaining the bad things that can happen if someone is allowed to write fanfic or do a game without the necessary legal rigamarole. Basically, the reason that there are copyright laws at all is to protect people who make their living with their writing as well as to protect any creative person from having their work subverted or changed in a way that they do not like or authorize. Misty is a professional writer. If she were not protected by copyright laws, people could steal her work and deprive her of the benefits of her work. She has put a lot of time and effort into crafting her world, and she deserves to have the results of that effort protected so that it can't be stolen with impunity. For those of you who have tried to write, think of this: was it easy or difficult to come up with a complete, plausible, and interesting world and set of characters? Do you like them? How would you feel if someone came in, took all of your work, wrote a story using it (possibly killing off characters or making changes that you disliked) and then distributed that story all over the place. Without copyright laws, there would be know way you could prevent this. They could take your favorite character and turn him/her into a child-molester and serial killer, and you couldn't do a thing. The copyright laws, however, protect the author's right to own the works of their mind and imagination. Other people can't steal and pervert your ideas with impunity. In addition, if you depend on the market for your stories as a means of your livelihood, then someone publishing fanfic may be seriously cutting into your market and, indirectly, taking food out of your mouth. That's why copyright lawsuits don't always hinge on how much money you made with an infringement, but also look at whether you significantly diminished the original author's market. This is surely one of the reasons that Misty will not allow an unauthorized RPG: it would cut into the market and significantly reduce her potential profits, should she decide to publish her own authorized version (and before anyone says that she shouldn't care about profit, try being poor for while, and then see if you think it's wrong to worry about people stealing from you). Fortunately, we DO have copyright laws, and the rights of intellectual property are protected in the US. Speaking as someone who will depend on my writing for my livelihood, I'm very glad of that fact (although, in fact, the chance that someone would steal my ideas to make an RPG are pretty close to nil--since I write technical non-fiction *grin*). I have to agree as well. It would seem shes trying to force Velgarth to evolve into its own "modern world" what with the upset of magick and the rapid rise of technology. Granted some will think that the Hawkbrothers and the Valdemarian Mages will put things to right but I personally dont see it happening. Theyll make attempts and reach half victories IMHO and eventually I believe Velgarth will become more like our own world. Which is what many fantasy writes do I believe. The create a world and then take it through Ages and Cycles (no Jordan referrences intended here) Look at Master Tolkien for example. He created a beautiful world, tore it apart through wars and chaos and at the conclusion the Quendi, Hobbits, and magick were fading as Man and Technology raised their ugly heads. Misty has reached a perfect paoint in the Velgarth world, albeit a tragic and bittersweet point, to pause (note for those with hackles up and claws extended I said PAUSE not leave), and move on to other works. I've always found it amusing that while similar official rules apply to black horses (to be a true black, the horse can have no brown hairs or "points" on him.. otherwise, he's considered a dark bay), people tend to ignore this and call very-dark bays "black." The same people would never dream of calling a a very-white horse "white." At least, that's been my experience. I know there are quite a few "older" members who probably just aren't as quick to jump up and say their age. But one of the nice things about mailing lists is that age is irrelevant while maturity is important. A lot of things in our society work the opposite way. Anyway, enough rambling. --Kris aka Lady Laire __________________________________________________________________________ | Kris Frye |3.141592653589793238462643383279502884197169399375105| | kfrye-+AT+-reed.edu |82097494459230781640628620899862803482534211706798214| ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Sep 1998 15:35:04 EDT From: AprilS81-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: collage of stuff Message-ID: In a message dated 98-09-11 15:00:16 EDT, you write: << I'm 23 and a senior at Butler University in Indianapolis, In. I felt as if I was one of the younger members, and now I am feeling like a Matriarch-Crone. Oh well, age is a matter of perspective, and my perspective has always been different than most others. >> funny how that age thing works, huh? I was feeling young and cute (okay, scratch the cute.) for awhile, until people began confessing their ages. (Oh, I'm seventeen.) I stumbled upon Bedlam Boyz a few days ago ina neat little used book store. I was interested when the cover proclaimed it prequel to Knight of Ghosts and Shadows. It was a good read, though there were few characters that survived into the following books; namely Kayla and Elisabet. I would recommend it to those who haven't read it yet.It is not written by Misty- still good stuff. Well...Senior year...no time....So I will have to try to sneak out posts when I probably should be doing AP government research. How depressing. Oh! I found me a nifty name!
