Its been over a week wsince I last checked my mail so I'm overwhelmed (150 messages??!!! Ack!) and I'll be mostly lurking until I catch up.... I'm good at these Vanyel questions, for obvious reasons, so even though someone already answered, I'm sure, I'll toss in my two cents and run the risk of being redundant.... >In MPromise Van is worried about his children getting backlash from the >attack in which Jaysen is killed... He mentions Brightstar and Jissa, >but how about Featherfire? (I love that name!) Arved doesn't have Gifts, >but Feather's Mage-Gifted... So how is /she/ protected? He probably thought of the two together, and when he realized that Brightstar would be fully protected, Featherfire would be too. > >Also Van says in MPawn that Savil tested him, and he had /no/ Gifts >there, so did the Gate collaspsing sort of rush through Channels that >had /no/ intention of ever opening and blast them open? But Van says in >MPrice that the reason Wfyren Wood made him uneasy was because of >his Mage-Gift Potential, which according to Savil he didn't have... I think you are confused about what Potential is. Potential is not something that every body has, and not everybody with potential has a gift. Potential is there, and it sometimes opens naturally and slowly. He didn't have gifts--Savil knew that he would NEVER open naturally, and no one knows how to blast open someones channels... >Van can work magic thro' Heralds with Mage-Gift in Potential, but how >can Mages/Heralds tell that it's Potential? Is it because the Channels >/look/ like they /could/ open? It had something to do with the Companions, I think.... You remember that when he made the web, the Companions were part of this magical linkage that didn't really have much to do with the Heralds... So I think Van went through the Companions and the potential to work magic. And the Potential is visible, and it can be told whether it will open. i don't know how, but it can. >I'm /still/ confused over Van and his Healing Gift... Savil /distinctly/ >says that all his Channels EXCEPT for HEALING were blasted open... >Healing was /still closed/ Van didn't have any Gifts before 'Lendel! I >can accept that he used the nodes to boost the Gift, but where did the >Gift come from? Its a general consensus that the Healing Gift thing is just a mistake... Also, his Bardic Gift disappeared somewhere, so Misty probably just switched the two or something. > >Oh yes... What does Earth-Magic come under? If Van had /all/ his >Channels (excepting Healing) openned, then wouldn't he have, like the >Tayledras earth-Magic? He may not have had the potential for Earth-Magic as such. I don't really know what EarthMagic consists of. I think its the earth sense (like Daren had and Tremane) tied in with Journeyman level talents. Stuff above that is probably only around the Taleydras and they have Healer Adepts. A Healer Adept would need the Earth Sense to go with his Healing and Magic, I would think. Hmm...back to lurking and catching up on my plethora of messages... See you when I come up for air. About the change in the hertasi---If I remember correctly one of the Tayledras either Darkwind or Starwind or Moondance-for the life of me I can't remember who or from which book-said something about the hertasi being damaged in the double blast that started the first mage storms. I think it all boils down to the fact that the ones who were left with the Kal'a'din (sp) who did not go with the Gryphon's were a lot closer to the double blast than the ones who left. Being magical creatures their general make up was changed making them shy and subservient to the Tayledras. The ones who escaped with the Gryphons were not subjected to the blast and remained the way they were originally constructed. Whew! I hope that was not too confused! They're outgoing in the Gryphon books, but really shy in LHM and Winds. And then when the Lost Clan (too lazy to get off my arse and go look it up) came to Darkwind's Clan, the Hertasi that they brought with them were like Gesten (Amberdrake's Hertasi). But I can't figure out why ... thoughts? I have two possible theories about this. One is that we don't really see that many hertasi. Perhaps it can just be chalked up to differences in personality. Second theory, a long time has passed between the Gryphon books and Winds. Perhaps it's just part of Hertasi adaptation to blend into the background more. I would call it a camoflauge personality.
