Well I know Gwena was not, but no one ever said anything about Rolan. At one point the Stephen/Lendel ghost goes out of his way to mention that Gwena was at a disadvantage because she did not have past life experience to refer to, but I do not know if this means that all Grove Born were inexperienced. No on ever mentions anything like that about Rolan. I think Rolan may have been a herald in a past life, I think the Companion to the Queen's Own would have to have real life experience to advise or support his/her Chosen. Gwena on the other hand was Grove Born for a specific reason, to protect and guide Elspeth. That needed a powerful gaurdian spirit not one that necessarily needed human experiences. Just my opinion but it makes sense to me. Fluff: The woman in the blue violet tunic bursts into the hall trailed by ferrets. She shrieks "RUN FOR YOUR LIVES THE TERM PAPERS ARE COMING!!!!" Pausing to gasp for breath, the woman looks around sheepishly, "Sorry, Sorry but reality is steadily encroaching on me and I have way to much work to do." With her ferrets dancing around her feet, the woman looks around the hall distractedly before going to sit down by the hot springs to relax for a bit. Once she is seated her ferrets jump onto her lap and into the bag that she is carrying. They soon re-emerge with sheep shaped squeaky toys clutched in their teeth. They quickly bound away to share their treasures with the other creatures of the hall. The woman just sits back and giggles at the antics of her friends. Misty explains this previously puzzling phenomenon in the intro to one of the stories in OBlood: "By the way, if you've noticed that the ladies often switch horses, it's not a mistake. As explained in By the Sword, since they are partners, the battlesteeds are trained to accept either rider, so they often switch off just to keep the mares in training. ... It would be a real problem if Tarma happened to need a horse that was all the way across a battlefield, and Kethry's happened to be right at hand but wouldn't let her mount.." So, that's the explanation! Wow, I can't believe I'm posting on something that's less than a week old! A little while ago, Judy Wren said: Even though I seem to be in the minority, I really like most of Larry Dixon's art. And there *are* Siamese with red markings. Not bright red like in Jody Lee's artwork, but definitely red. They're very pretty. Alianora Rose said: This brings up something I've been wondering about for a while now: what happens to lifebonded couples after they die? IIRC, Idry was very eager to please, had a sunny personality, and struck me as somewhat young and innocent, which doesn't fit Idra at all. As to non-heralds reincarnated as companions, I suppose its possible, but it seems that anyone suited for the job would have been chosen in the previous life. ******* There's been something about Obreaker that I've been wondering about for a while. Why is it that Kethry was able to use magic inside Valdemar without being horribly uncomfortable? She even took the test to become an adept mage there, and never mentioned any feelings of being watched or anything of the sort. This was obviously after Van had told the Vrondi to watch all mages, and since she wasn't a herald I can't think of a good reason why she would be exempt from the spell. Anyone have any thoughts on this? And on the Van being reincarnated as a companion, I think this highly unlikely, because in the end of Sbreaking, someone, possibly Van himself, says that he and Stef/'Lendel are going to go on, to leave the earth (or Velgarth, I suppose, would be more accurate). Anyone have > any thoughts on this? I think that Kethry may have been able to use magic because the Vrondi recognized the fact that she was in the company of Roald who they would recognize as being a herald. If I remember correctly Vanyel changed the identifier spell to exclude heralds or people who had the herald's approval. Also they were on the "border" of Valdemar and in one of the earlier books it is mentioned that Valdemar had grown. If that is true, it could mean that where Kethry was the spell was not very strong or simply non-existant because of the distance. I have a 3 year old & he is absolutely mad for any kind of Matchbox cars, or anything like that. However, it does depend on the child. ObMisty: um, um, Ooh, I got one! Had anyone read the Bard's Tale series, decided they weren't very good & now is desperately trying to find copies?? Humph! I, like, totally stand corrected. Well, it was nice while it lasted. But really, red hair and red clothing? um... Still, I can't believe I forgot that. Must go reread the sacred books (obsessed about Vanyel? Me? haha. I am _beyond_ obsessed. talk about tragic... i'm a girl, he's gay, I'm real, he's in another universe at the very least ... okay. anyway) ><and slippers. I know she said they all had similar faces, but where did she describe them? Ah yes. Is Rolan reincarnated? Never mind, I don't care. This was a hypothetical. (you are entitled to your opinion of what they look like, don't get me wrong, I'm just ... talkative, yeah that's it) >Raven Darkblade, >Holy Hand of the Goddess of Elves, >Card-Carrying Bitch, Nice. very nice. I'll have to remember that line. Yes, oh those who have stayed with me this long, it was good for your souls reading through all of my indignant muttering. Want a really scary thought? Too bad. here it is anyway. *I was thinking of being a writer.* Oh, and one final thing.. how much of Bedlam's Bard (Knight of Ghosts and Shadows and Summoned to Tourney - envision acronyms and/or underlines - my fingers are getting tired) how much of it was written by Mercedes Lackey and how much by Ellen Guon? Same here. ehehe. :) >In Oathbound, when Tarma and Kethry leave the Liha'irden camp, it says that >Tarma is riding Hellsbane and Kethry is riding Ironheart. I assume that Tarma >owns Hellsbane, etc. However, in Oathbreakers, when they are leaving the >Sunhawks' camp to go find Idra, it says that Tarma is riding Ironheart and >Kethry Hellsbane. Am I being too nitpicky; do the two horses just belong as a >team to the two women or have I discovered a misty-ake? Nope! Misty explained this in Oathbreakers...the two can ride each other's horses. Misty said it would be a good idea in case the two would be in battle somewhere, and say Tarma reeeely needed a mount but the only one available was 'Heart and wouldn't let Tarma mount...:) So see it as two things: a) Misty planned it that way or b) Misty saw the mistake after publication and found a way to cover it. :) We were talking earlier about why Prince Daren was/wasn't co-consort with Queen Selenay and I compared it to the Queen Elizabeth/Prince Phillip thing and someone said that Phillip wasn't a Prince in his own right....well he is. :) I did some research and Phillip *is* a Prince of Greece and the reason why he's not King-Consort and the countries of England and Greece didn't join together like in the good-ol'-days is *because* Greece threw out thier royal family. So whoever disagreed with me was right and I was right. Partially. :) ANYWAYS....I talked to my mom about this whole thing. I figure Daren didn't take the title of King Consort when he and Selenay married was two fold: 1) They already had a major problem with the LAST prince of Rethwellan that married into the Valdemarian Royal Family..who wanted to be King but couldn't 'cause he couldn't get Chosen...so Darn decided that it might be good PR not to take the title of King. or 2) He decided to stay as Prince so they could call in better favors from Rethwellan. If he became King-Consort Daran of Valdemar, he couldn't call in favors as easily as Prince Daran of Rethwellan could. :) And here's my question o the day: and a possible LHM spoiler, iffin you haven't read MPrice: 'kay. So. Stef was 'Lendel re-incarnated more or less. Right? SO. If 'Lendel's spirit is residing in Stef's body...how did Van talk to 'Lendel's spirit in the Spirit World after he and Stef realized they were bonded? And did Van and Stef ever figure that out? And why didn't 'Lendel *say* anything about it? I wish Misty had played with that more...that made such an interesting plot twist...I wish she'd used it more! -Keth ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 1727 **********************************
