This came up a while ago, and IIRC, then we had decided that it was a combination of the last two points - distance and Valdemar growing. However, just because someone is a Herald doesn't automatically exempt them from being seen and "questioned" - no textevd on hand, but Van got caught by his own spell and felt the vrondi watching him, even thought he was a Herald, a Mage, and the one who set the spell in the first place. The vrondi stop watching if the mage affirms that yes, s/he is a Herald. Not fair. Life isn't > fair, but aren't the Havens supposed to be? I was under the impression that you've got more than just one chance, or one soul, to be lifebonded to. In fact, I'm almost certain of that. Remember, oh, what's their names from AotQ, the lesbian couple Talia found out about by accident... No books around, but I think one was named Ylsa or something like that. Her lifebond, also female, life-bonded again to... Sherril, was it? after Ylsa was killed. And I remember a mention that they might have become one of the rare threesomes, had Ylsa lived. My personal theory on Misty's lifebonds: There are certain qualities in a person/soul that would make two bond together, and sometimes more than two have the right qualities. The hard part is finding these other people. There's not many, but it's not written that "your lifebond will be so-and-so, and you can have no other", more like, "your lifebond will be with someone like this, and there are x souls (x being a very small number in comparision to the whole population) that have this. Good luck, you *might* find one of them in a lifetime." > Oh, and what's with the sheep?! Sorry if I am getting nit picky, but I thought that Vanyel decided that it would be REALLY annoying to be questioned by the vrondi everytime he tried to use magic and changed the spell to automatically recognize heralds. If nothing else, how would the heralds who later had their mage gift trained as farsight react to the vrondi's touch when they tried to use their gift? Did the Companions intervene or was it just assumed to be part of the gift? > 'kay. So. Stef was 'Lendel re-incarnated more or less. Right? SO. And why didn't 'Lendel *say* > anything about it? Hmm, well in MHO I think that Lendel as Steph may have been able to communicate that one time because of Vanyel's reaction to the new bond with Steph. Lendel owed Van big time, so much so that he was reincarnated to make things right, but Van may have tried to reject the bond out of guilt if "Lendel" had not intervened. Also Steph was asleep and the part of him that was Lendel may have had more freedom to reach out to Van. After Van accepted the lifebond there was no reason for Lendel to speak to Van again, it would just have mucked up his relationship with Steph. Quick question here, Why has TOR changed the covers of the Diana Tregarde books? Children of the Night and Burning Water have both had slight cover changes and it has hurt the look of the books. The font used for the titles look really cheesy and with BW the cover is no longer embossed. Also with BW the Native American weapons at the top of the books have been removed. Just wondering, its probably just cheaper. OK, everybody break out you copy of By The Sword (I should have been a teacher...hehehe...) Turn to part in which Kethry and Tarma are conversing with Kethry's son Jendar, who took over Kethry's school and moved it near Petras (Rethwellan Capital), trying to get info on what happened with Selenay and Thanel that caused King Megrarthon to die. In the conversation, Kethry states that the one time she was in Valdemar was enough for her. Jendar says that he kept feeling eyes on the back of his neck, like someone was watching him. Kethry responds that it gets worse when you do magic. From that, I would assume that she waa not immune to the barrier. Later when Kero and the Skybolts have crossed into Valdemar, Quenten and the other mages beg to be allowed to return and if possible find another way to get there besides going through Valdemar because of the feeling of being watched. When Vanyel set up the spell, he stated that it was to make the mage feel as if someone was periodically tapping him/her on the shoulder and asking "Who are you?" . Gwena is the one who makes the slip She starts to refer to Savil as Say... and then corrects herself About the Monarchs Own's Companion. I believe there are exceptions to every rule and the Monarch's Own could very well be one. It would be hard, for example, if the Monarch"s Own Companion was killed and the Monarch's Own survived for a Companion with no political or social experience to be able to step in and take over the job. Likewise if both are killed and the new Companion chooses a vested Herald to be Monarch's Own, the Companion would still need to know quite a bit to help his chosen aclimitize to the new position. I know the Herald trainees are taught about courtly graces, but to me, you can read a book about archery, but it doesn't mean when you pick up the bow you will hit the bullseye (or even the target itself) I do believe that the Monarch's Own"s Companion could be reincarnated, and who better to come back as him than a deceased Monarch. Nathan D Henderson wrote: > Wouldn't all heralds have blue eyes. If they are reincarnated as > commpanions and from commpanions or do the eye colors change when they > are reincarnated. Reincarnation has nothing to do with genetics. No matter where the spirit comes from, the physical appearance of a person depends on the genes that come from the parents in the sperm and egg. There is an instance in Arrows where Talia thinks about how he is suppling not only his wisdom, but the MOH before her, Talamir IIRC. I think the MOC is NEVER reincarnated, something to do with Grove-born being an even stronger guardian spirit than reincarnated Companions. For this, watch Winds Of Fate when that mage compares Elspeth and Gwena to Skif and (I can remember his Companion's NAME I just can't spell it) Kethry inside Valdemar- Yes, but later she tells her son how uncomfortable it was. (This is when they get the news that Daren's brother is dead.) This topic was discussed before, the conclusions were, IIRC, that she felt some discomfort, but didn't recall it till later. Also, Vanyel defined the vrondi by "Wherever a (on-duty) Herald is." And since there was only one, all she had to do was get a little south of him, and viola. The feelings would have receeded as she went further south. What I am wondering is this...how come the Vrondi don't travel with out of Valdemar Heralds? I think it would have been funny if the mages in Hardorn or Rethwellan would have suddenly been "WATCHED" while Talia was doing her little peace missions. Then again, the power supply Van had given the Vrondi was almost dead at that time. (You know, the Haven Heartstone) and then right after the Heartstone was re-charged, he broke the web. iiiiiiie! ~_^ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Sep 1998 10:49:54 PDT From: "Darcy Backes" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Fwd: Re: stuffstuffstuff/Bedlam's Bard Message-ID: <19980920174956.13397.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> > >About Bedlam's Bard- I just got the book last night, and was up until two >am reading it. Somebody said they didn't like Bedlam's Bard. I'm going to walk a very wide circle around that statement, and talk instead about why _I_ liked it. See - I can be good. First off, he starts out at the Renaissance Faire, and from that wonderful magic things happen. Gee, now I want to go to the Faire. next, he plays a flute (much better than I do) and how cool is that? Anyone today can learn the flute, most people can find their way to a faire (hmmm I keep mispelling that as farie - is my computer trying to tell me something?) and it's just so possible. Aside from the fact that he ends up fighting elves and monsters and (I ain't gonna spoil it). Valdemar rocks, but B'sB skirts the possible. An' it's got a witch in it, and they're always interesting. I do not think that is what the Barrier does. There were 3 things involved in the absence of magic from Valdemar. The first was the Vrondi spell. My understanding of this is that the Vrondi are to watch for Mages inside the borders of Valdemar and to watch them. Let them know that they are being watched, and to notify the nearest Herald-Mage. Since for 500 years, there were no Herald-Mages, all they could do is watch.. Nothing was said about if they do magic. From what I have read of the conversation between Kethry and Jendar, Jendar did not do (at least admit to doing) any magic, but yet was watched. But, when Hulda (in reflection) does not seem to mention having any problem living inside the borders. It makes me wonder. When Kethry said that it got worse if you do magic, IMO, means that the mages are watched no matter if they do magic or don't. Maybe Hulda slowly snapped while living in Valdemar(she was rather demented don'tcha think) The second, is the compulsion spell that Stefan and Vanyel did after they were reunited. It made it impossible for people to even think of magic in the present. Any mention of magic is soon forgotten. The third is the Barrier. I believe it is what protected Valdemar from magic being cast against it from outside of their borders, not from within. Oh well, I think I am through babbling for a while. Made it through the dreaded Family Reunion, and there was much rejoicing. Peace, Love, and banana pudding in sheep shaped bowls for everyone.
