The way it was explained to me is that the upside-down ! or ? signals the beginning of a phrase/sentence which is given a different vocal emphasis. This makes it easier, when reading, to realize that the upcoming words are "spoken" in a different tone of voice. (E.g., with a question, the pitch of one's voice rises.) In English, you have to scan ahead to the end of the sentence to see that it's a question before you can tell how to read it. Also, an upside-down period (.) would probably be too hard to distinguish from the regular right-side-up ones. :-) > Nevermind. Oh, darn. :-( ObMisty: Yes, Tylendel and Stefen are reincarnations of the same soul. The evidence is simply too overwhelming for there to be much doubt in my mind. -- "Daddy, why do those people have to | Greg Wooledge use Microsoft Windows?" | wooledge-+AT+-kellnet.com "Don't stare, son; it's not polite." | http://www.kellnet.com/wooledge/ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Sep 1998 23:30:51 -0400 From: songbard-+AT+-juno.com (Eaton W Thurman) To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Infatuation with Vanyel Message-ID: <19980925.233052.-284409.0.SongBard-+AT+-juno.com> >1. For example, I've been kidded by co-workers when they saw the covers to the SERRA books I brought to read during my breaks, especially Chrome Circle. The worst though, has been with Patricia Kennealy-Morrison's books, especially the Arthur triolgy and Blackmantle. Those covers resemble really bad romance novels. I just HATE when friends make fun of what I know are perfectly good books because the cover art and the back-cover teasers look like such garbage. ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Have you tried to make "dust-covers" out of paper that you only slip around you book while reading it where "The Others" can see it, with a _very_ common "Title" on the jacket, like Umberto Eco's "The Name of The Rose"? That got my "criticists" (word) off my trail. And, of course, you can slip that paper cover at every book you read... I have also raided my gammas old hard backs for some old and moldy titles to use on my hard backs. Saves me precious reading time being wasted answering questions like "You know that's not real right ?" and I say "Guards! Guards! Remove this infidel from the Royal Reading Room! And off with their heads while you're at it!!" (on the inside) As for the Stepf/Tylendel thingy- does it really matter as long as out favorite boy is happy in the end ? The same guy who did such wonderful covers for the Dragonlance books. Needless to say, I was rather disappointed--though to be fair, his rendition of Tannim wasn't that bad (better than anything from Chrome Circle), and Tania could have been worse. Oh, but Aurilia nic Morrigan! He could have at least put her in black armor like she was supposed to be wearing during the end fight, instead of a barely-there cross between a minidress and lingerie. (oh yeah, and someone said that the covers for LHM from the SFBC were horrendous.....well, what were *they* like?) I'm dangerously curious. And Beth still looks like Barbie in that getup on the cover of B'sB (again, sorry, I don't remember who said it, bad delete finger, very bad, no dessert for you tonight!) ObMisty (yes, I actually have one) My favorite Vanyel scene is the one right after he and 'Lendel have been fighting to discourage gossip that they are lovers, and they are back in their quarters and are being quite disgusting and mushy....I live for scenes like that (I'm a HOPEFUL romantic, not hopeless). And I think it was Old Nic who said he liked the scene where Van is "coming on to" Leren, I loved that part also! Oh, and whoever (still got that bad delete finger) complained that Vanyel is "dead, fictional and gay", I loved that! I had a crush last year on this guy who goes to my school and who looked exactly like Vanyel (until he cut his hair)......theres no affection whatsoever between us though, anymore.....c'est la vie. He may end up being GM for an RPG campaign I'll be playing in this year......I feel very lucky, reading about how others can't RP at school, I belong the the Stratagy and Tactics club at my school! This year there will be at least 3-4 campaigns going on simultaneously. Lady Sunhawk said: > (oh yeah, and someone said that the covers for > LHM from the SFBC were horrendous.....well, what were *they* like?) I'm dangerously curious. Well, it is a three in one club special so instead of picking one of the Jody Lee covers they created one of their own. Van looks sickly, skeletal and stretched. He actually looks like Callista Flockheart from Allie McBeal on a very bad day. Yfandes is not pink or purple, but she looks more like the "infamous" Shin'a'in stud than the delicate boned creature that Misty describes. All of the colors are grey and olive tones, even Van's skin and hair. The background is a bunch of angry crow/demons and badly drawn lightening bolts. The one and only saving grace to the cover is that the herald unifrom is well drawn. My favorite scene from the LHM.... I have three really, one from each book I love the scene where Lendel gives Van his music back by making him understand that the bardic gift sometimes gets in the way of the music. To me that showed just how much Lendel loved Van, and how well he understood him. I love the last scene of Magic's Promise. I love the final growth of understanding, humor, and even friendship between Van and Jervis. Van realized that Jervis understood him far better than any of his family could. I love the last few lines where Van tell Jervis to tell his father that the sheep and Jervis are starting to look attractive and Jerivs says to stick to the sleep because they don't snore. To me that was a true sign of the beginning of a friendship that would have existed for a long time if it was not for Wethen's insistance that his son be like him. Finally the scene where Stefen and Medren are discussing how to seduce Van and the Healer walks in and tries to bully Stefen. Stefen's "act" and the Healer's reaction were priceless. The pillow that Stefen throws into Medren's face as he poses at the end was just icing on the cake. Of course the last scene between the ghost Van and Stefen was heartbreaking, the idea of loving a person enough to live for them is something everyone should cherish. Coming out of lurker-mode (darn homework! No time for anything anymore!!!!!!!!!!---count 'em) to answer this question. We've discussed (well, okay, argued) the heck out of whether Stefen is/isn't Lendel (personally, I think he is) but my favorite was the one where Lendel visits Van in his dream. I was in bed at 2:00 am, trying to finish the book-couldn't put it down-and got to that part. I literally started bawling so hard I couldn't even read. I had to put the book down for a good five minutes to get a grip on myself. Zhai'helleva! The whole idea was somewhat hilarious, from conception to the very end. But anyway.... Does anyone know how many variant covers of the LHM books there are? I know there's the ... Scifi book Club, where they're all in one, it's grey and looks halfway decent.... there's the sad version I have, by Jody Lee - duck, Rogue, they're throwing things - okay, I apologize to Jody Lee fans, but I just imagined him (and Stefen) as cuter than that. Honestly, what cover have you ever seen that does real justice to the pictures in your head? Oh, and just how many books (total count, including cowriting) has Misty written? Good luck to those in danger of getting really, reallly wet (just think of what Firesong would be saying if he was with you, and you'll collapse in laughter) Obsidian Rogue ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 1734 **********************************
