Of all the groups, the Shin'a'in most resemble the North American Plains tribes such as the Lakota, Pawnee, Oglala, etc., in that they are nomadic and warrior-like. On the early childhood thing though, I'd say that the average plains indian child probably had a longer childhood than, say, a 13th century European peasant. Also, on the fighting skills - many tribes were agrarian in nature, and even in those who weren't, it was more HUNTING skills than fighting skills that were praised. >wish TARMA had married Roald! Ooo, Ooo, I just thought of another one. OK, it's not the most dramatic or even memorable of the series, but I love the scene at the beginning of MPromise when Van comes back from Karse and has that encounter with Tantras. I know - no drama, no tears. I just love the way it points out the changes that have occured in Van - he's gone from being an uncertain Herald to a well-respected, even feared, member of the Circle. Ok. Like I said...it's not dramatic. >Psst! Songbard! I here you're new and unsplooshed. Sorry we missed >you. The woman lives about an hour from Tsa-la-gi and Tahlequah, the (historical and political) capitals of the Cherokee Nation. On the other hand, she might have been going for the popular conception, because it would be more familiar to her readers. > Also, on the fighting skills - many tribes were agrarian in > nature, and even in those who weren't, it was more HUNTING skills than > fighting skills that were praised. Well, most of the Great Plains groups were not particularly agrarian, although, certainly most of the groups around them were (Northeastern, Southeastern, Southwestern, etc). They were nomadic hunter/gatherers. And intertribal warfare was endemic to almost all the culture groups of Native Americans. The "wars" might not seem as impressive as our modern idea of war (thousands and thousands of people involved, huge areas devastated, populations decimated, etc), but they were definitely warlike. Actually, I always thought that Misty had modeled the Shin'a'in on David Eddings' Algars, who are clearly modeled on the Mongolians. For one thing, the Native American tribes, even on the Great Plains, didn't really herd anything. However, herding was a way of life for the Mongolian peoples. Plus, they had the whole complex tent thing going on.
