In her fiction, she allows for many different kinds of love. I think it is best described in the Aurthurian triolgy - Gwennivyr was a long, loving relationship with Keils, before she falls completely in love with Arthur. Also, Taliesen (the narrator of the trilogy) talks about his early loves before he finally commits to a lifebond (really, a LIVESbond, since it extends to every incarnation of the two souls) with Arthur's sister Morgan. This seems to describe Talia and Kris's relationship to a "T". Morrison doesn't label one love as being more important than the other - each has its place. One runs its course and the other is eternal. Both are loves, however. >And I have not finished the book, but the questions I have about Ghost don't get answered,> >IIRC. I won't bother to reiterate the questions, but they have always bothered me, as well, especially Ghost's being so uncertain and confused about things. Of course, I have also had the same questions about the idiot Herald who was busy trying to whip the two of them into oblivion. Is this the only example of a stupid Herald we have seen? They were nomadic hunter/gatherers. I meant "most of" in the sense of North American, not plains. It may have come across wrong. Certainly, the plains tribes were very warlike in nature. It is interesting to note, however, that the much-seen (in movies, that is) custom of scalping resulted from European influence - scalps for bounties and all that. >And intertribal warfare was endemic to almost all the culture groups of >Native Americans. The "wars" might not seem as impressive as our modern >idea of war (thousands and thousands of people involved, huge areas >devastated, populations decimated, etc), but they were definitely warlike. Very true - though as you said, the "war" idea is different for us than it would have been then. Not that there wasn't bloodshed (there is a mountain in Georgia called "Blood Mountain" because of a battle between Creek and Cherokee tribes that took place on its slopes) but much of it was symbolic raiding and reiving rather than outright slaughter. >Actually, I always thought that Misty had modeled the Shin'a'in on David >Eddings' Algars, who are clearly modeled on the Mongolians. Hmm...interesting. I had never compared the Shin'a'in to the Algars. The Algars are horsemen, of course, but their primary economy was based on cattle. Also, Shin'a'in have a very Eastern outlook, while the Algar's are descended from decidedly Western-like stock. (The Alorn's being the epitome of Western Europeaners) Also, though there is mention of clan in the Eddings books, there is no evidence of as tightly-organized a system as the Shin'a'in have. >For one thing, the Native American tribes, even on the Great Plains, didn't really >herd anything. However, herding was a way of life for the Mongolian >peoples. Plus, they had the whole complex tent thing going on. Definately no herding for the NA tribes. They followed the herds - it was actually the white mans inroads into the buffalo population that threatened to put an end to the plains indian lifestyle, more than any slaughter against the indians. Also - no horses. Remember that horses were not indigineous to North America. --<>-- Ex Actor, MBA-in-training, sword-weilding, yo-yo'ing fool-for-the-ages ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. I never thought of that...I think that's a very good possibility. After all, Tashir had some serious problems both with his Gift and with his emotional state. Added on top of that, Tashir's being Chosen was VERY good for Valdemar, and had Tashir not been Chosen, or had his Companion not been able to calm him a bit, things could have gotten pretty messy. Being Groveborn would also explain Ghost's inexperience. >Hmm...interesting. I had never compared the Shin'a'in >to the Algars. Well, I think the Algars must have had clans. Instead of the title, "king", they have the chief of the clan-chiefs. I think though that they are much more absorbed into the Algar culture as a whole than into their individual clans, as the Shin'a'in are. Rhiannon Shadowsong: I sympathize with you, really I do! IMHO Ghost may be a Companion and there for a gaurdian spirit, but I do not think that this means that he couldn't be traumatized. Think about it, the bonding with Tashir was very different from the others that have been described. Tashir was in an almost pyschotic state having just witnessed the death of everyone and everything he loved. Instead of being able to help his chosen (ala Yfandes helping Vanyel) he was immediately attacked by that one herald (can't remember his name). Being attacked by a herald, one of the good guys, would have been a total shock, not to mention the wounds which would have been pain that would have just amplified the emotional pain that Ghost was feeling from Tashir. Basically I think that Ghost was suffering from a sort of post traumatic stress disorder. I do not think that he was Grove Born. The Grove Born are VERY powerful and would have been able to make anyone "hear" them if the situation was desperate enough. If Ghost had been Grove born he could have made that herald hear him no matter how irratic his mindspeaking was. There had been mind healer heralds (Teren?) and I think that for some one as traumatized as Tashir there would have to be human understanding to back up the bond. (boy, am I creative!!) Message-ID: <361449B0.5371-+AT+-planet.eon.net> Ele wrote something about Ghost being Grove-Bron... (too lazy to do anything mildly like using the copy&paste function. My brain is fried. I just wrote an essay and my ballet teacher was making me do slightly obscene gumby things to myself, soo...) So this is my reason for Ghost NOT being Grove Born. They are a looonnnggg way from the Capitol, for one, and from what we've seen the Grove-Born Companions appear when they are about to Choose or the previous one has died and Valdemar needs a new MO's Companion to Choose a new MO. (BTW - is Tashir have the Mage-Gift? I haven't read LHM for AGES. And if he is, is he powerful enough to warrent a GB? Van wasn't, and look what HE went through and did for Valdemar.) When Gwena Chose Elspeth, she appeared and Chose her without any hanging arund the feild and such, and a very special Companion was needed for the first Herlad Mage since Vanyel. In Winds I believe that it was said that the Gods & such couldn't see very far into the future, and the Gods & Goddesses in Valdemar don't intervin at all, so how could Ghost have had the chance to get to Valdemar and then set out to find his Chosen in time? Maybe Ghost was one of the Heraldic trainees who was killed on his first circut. That would account for the lack of experiance (if this was his first reincarnation) and provide a reason for him being there. (he HAD earned his Whites, but didn't have them for long enough to gain much experiance) So Ghost would be like Tashir - two firghtened kids being attacked by someone who they BOTH know SHOULD be the good guy. That would explain alot, no? Ele wrote AGAIN (;P) and asked about dogs. Well, Gyr has the mastiffs (probibly Pelgaris animals because of the huge litters and size) and something like a whippit or a greyhound to carry messages. They most likely had beagles, staghounds, and other assorted hunting dogs, and like Lady Starlight said, they most likely have lap dogs too. *Yvonne changes her sneakers into something without shoelaces (beat-up green moccasins that have lost 1\2 their bunny fur as well as a few beads and stiching on the soles) to foil those pesky ferrets* > Hey!
