IIRC, In WOFury, Vanyel states that Gwena has no life experience to draw from. IMO, that would state that Gwena is not reincarnated. Ghost may have as guarding the Heartstone in Linneas(if someone drained that Heartstone, the physical destruction would stretch through the heart of Valdemar, and the joining of Linneas-Barres to Valdemar would be rather important, but I am still not convinced. I had been thinking of that myself. In MPromise, Vanyel states that if Jisa is chosen, that it won't be a bonded choosing, because when Shavri dies that Taver will choose her. I suppose that the bond would be light enough to break that if the MOC chooses one that is a Herald or Trainee that the Companion that had originally chosen would be able to choose again. Such a long time since the last one , so I'll jump right in and say something pro. Not that it's my favourite pastime or something. As a fictional character, I admire her. She was the first of active female characters in Fantasy who got things done herself instead of letting the hero do it for her since I'd read the Sword & Sorceress anthologies in the late 80s (the 5 that were published in German, that is). WoFate was my 1st Misty novel, I read it in '93. I kind of fell in love with Elspeth. She's stubborn, headstrong, rebellious. In RL, I would have strangled her a long time ago. But as a character in a book, she's great. She makes the whole thing interesting. She's not as nice and sweet as Talia and she certainly has her flaws. That's what makes her, IMO, utterly believable and realistic, close to RL. Characters have to have weaknesses and flaws. That's what keeps them from being cardboard figures and gives them more personality. It also adds to the story, keeps it from being bland, reduces the risk that it drifts too near to sermon or propaganda or that it looks like a mere exercise in writing. -- Khenta Blaufalk ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 Oct 1998 14:08:04 -0700 From: Peter Allen To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Website/Kero Message-ID: <3.0.6.32.19981004140804.007c72b0-+AT+-pop3.frontiernet.net> Hi all :) A few of you on the list have been discussing the thoughts of pseudo-Heralds and such. You may want to look into the Queen's Own (I've lost the post that was regarding that, could someone be so kind as to repost it?). It is the official fan club of Mercedes Lackey, and has a system for how to become a Herald or whichever you choose, and is all allowed by Misty :). For those of you which still would like to talk amongst yourselves regarding what you can do for Misty, it would be best that you discuss it privately. That way, if you are doing something that might get you in trouble should you be caught, you aren't going to risk endangering the list :). --- The problem that I could foresee with Kero having to be in Greys would be that she is the captain of her company, a company that is defending Valdemar. There would be a problem with respect for the whole company were a person to look upon Kero and think, "They're being run by a student?" so they instead gave her full Herald status. Also, as someone else mentioned, her age would have some to do with it, since she is a worldly person in her own right, and wouldn't need some of the classes that are meant for the very young. Van said she was going to be, but that it wouldn't be a bonded choosing until shavri died. Everyone was concerned about her not being Chosen (still wasn't when she married Trev? is that his name?) but she did eventually become Monarch's Own, and Consort. She fought better than Alberich and was well-trained in her gift (no need of classes there), she knows the three rs, all she needs are a few specific instructions, like the religions and history. and I bet she already knew more of that than other out-Kingdomers, because Tarma taught her, and Tarma probly learned a bit from Roald. she knew about Companions, anyway, which is more than you can say from anyone else outside the borders. No changes... in Winds, trainees wear grey. oh wait a sec, she never learned offensive stuff with her gifts though. I don't guess she'd need it, but she'd still need to be trained. Wow. In the StOrMs, she was *not* the main character. She was just one of the people Misty was using to cover Tremane's thing without making it too weird. I mean, how would reading have been if there was only Tremane in Hardorn? There had to be SoMeThiNg worth reading that ws over at Hardorn, and that thing happened to be ElsPeTh and DarKWiNd, see? ya, I'll shuttup now...btw, I like Kero and Elspeth the BeSt of all the characters anyway, cuase theire so...independant... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 03 Oct 1998 23:43:48 -0600 From: Angela Hoskinson To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Vancouver Message-ID: <3.0.1.32.19981003234348.006cde54-+AT+-mail.bcsupernet.com> At 09:11 AM 03/10/98 +0100, you wrote: >>Adding to that, we Canucks are supposed to be super nice ppl, >>Yvonne > > >I know this is totally off topic, and I'm very sorry ... but I was just >wondering where in Canada you're from. While I do enjoy being on this mailing list, unfortunately I have to sign off because I'm on WAY too many right now. I mostly get digests and I'm getting about 140 messages a day! But anyway, thought I'd say hi, I'll be in Vancouver for the Lower Mainland Dog Show in Abbotsford showing my Bernese Mountain Dog, if you happen to be there on sat (I think it's the 25th?) come say hi. *** Angela Hoskinson, Rowan & Dirk Qualicum Beach, BC, Canada http://planet10.v-wave.com/angela/ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Oct 1998 22:15:34 -0400 From: songbard-+AT+-juno.com (Eaton W Thurman) To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Copywrites and trademarks. Is it just me, or is it a sad commentary on our society today that we can't simply discuss things without worrying about a lawsuit, or being caught by someone? It sounds suspiciously like thought-police to me. I understand that Misty would be concerned about someone trying to usurp her creation - if that person were trying to make money off of it. Now, I'm not personally into fanfic. But if a person wants to write a story set in someone else's world and trade it with friends, then he or she should be allowed to do so without fear of reprisal. If someone wants to role-play in a favored world, then the creator of that world should not take vengeful action against that person. It's O.K. to protect onesself and one's investment - it's not fair to punish one's readers, the people who put food on one's table, for enjoying one's books too much. About to read The Firebird - I've heard negative comments in the past, but - just call me the Will Rogers of Misty's books. (For those of you who don't get it - I've never met a Misty Book I didn't like!) --<>-- Ex Actor, MBA-in-training, sword-weilding, yo-yo'ing fool-for-the-ages ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail.
