I was thinking about it & still am convinced that Gervase was the hertase mage that Darkwind was thinking of. No real textevd. but from what I recall: 1) he lived in the Pelagirs 2) He often played at being a wizard (walking upright, etc.) 3) When he saw the man being chased, he "played lizard" & threw them off the scent and 4) the magic in his tree would do one of two things: turn him into a human, or give him mage powers. So to my mind, he was either an orphaned Hertasi or a one-off Changecreature. IIRC, Griffon became the Lord Martial's Herald. Probably to keep him relatively safe as he was the only Firestarter in a while. ********************************************************************* About Gervase, it does not state whether there are other Hertasi living around him. It just says that he lives in a hollow tree. I believe I read in WOFate, when Dawnfire is reporting that some of her Hertasi and Trevardi had vanished along with their dwellings, that some of the Hertasi lived in hollow trees as well as caves, I believe it depends on which they prefer. -- "Insanity takes its toll.....Please have exact change" "Where the hell are the singin' cats?" -- Paul Newman "Surely, you can't be serious!" The problem that with not snipping is that it creates unnecessarily long posts, which in turn creates very long digests, and it is easier on Vanyel, the list server, to churn out short digests than long ones. Not only that, but it is a point of netiquette to those that read digests, so that they need not scroll through things that they have already read, and do not apply to the current section of the digest.
