I tend to agree that the complexity level of some of the later books on Velgarth make them less compelling than AotQ and LHM. Storm Rising is one of the stronger books, because of Karal, and I personally really enjoyed the Black Gryphon and Owlflight, again, because all three of those books have central characters who are likeable and interesting. But I also can enjoy seeing characters who I liked in other stories pop up in later stories. Eldan shows up in Arrow's Fall, for example, although you have to be reading carefully to spot him. One of the joys of reading Lackey is seeing how carefully she maintains the details. Those details, by the way, make it fairly clear that the overall history and "magical physics" of Velgarth and Valdemar were well thought-out at an early point in the writing. I think that the Cataclysm (and to some extent the Mage Storms) were implied as early as Magic's Pawn. The Tayledras' task of clearing up damage is already there. Yes, it took a small army of characters and thousands of pages to get us through all that, but we are talking about a change, a quest if you will, as great as anything in Tolkein. (And it took me plenty of tries to get through Lord of the Rings -- but it was worth it!) I may be unusual among Lackey fans in my tastes, however. I thoroughly enjoyed The Fire Rose, and one of my favorite reads is Four and Twenty Blackbirds. The latter, in particular, reflects a maturity in attitude about the nature of relationships that is refreshing after so many "lifebonded" people in the earlier books. (There's also a nice example of that maturity in Owlsight.) Sacred Ground is excellent too, and I wish she'd write more in that setting. For those of you who like strong stories about strong characters, I would recommend the first of the Bardic Voices books, The Ship Who Searched, and Burning Water. And if you can get your hands on a book edited by Drake and Fawcett called Battlestation Book Two: Vanguard, there's a great short story called "Medic" that didn't get into Fiddler Fair. What I'll do is hunt up the original list, it's around here somewhere, add the Bondbirds that I know about and send that to the list. One question though, do those without want to "receive" a Bondbird or just let me know who's bonded with them for the list. I know Nightdancer used to "raise" the birds and then let people know who's bonded with them. I'm happy to go either way or even do both. If people don't want me to include them and their Bondbirds on the list, please let me know. In order to not clog up the list with Bondbird messages flying left, right and forth, I'm more than happy to receive mail offlist. Again, if any of the Mist Council have a problem with this, I will cease and desist with no "real" complaints. (Might whinge a bit quietly thou! :-p) Owlsight No spoilers. Loved it. It seemed at little more "adult" than Owlflight to me. Am I being strange? Firestorm Is a book being written about Lavan (sp) Firestorm or am I just imagining this? Fairy Tales I've concentrated on the Velgarth series and have precious little of the rest of her writings. Could someone please let me know how many there are. I am assuming that there is no particular order to read them in. Also, which Fairy tales has she written about? I've got at least half a dozen other things want to say, but I'm tired and I hear my bed calling. Sweet dreams all, K'Tara Bondmate to Aka - (Harpy Eagle, grumpy and heavy) :Am not!!!! Ty asked: :how do you guys get your bondbirds? just curious :-) we mailed off a request to Nightdancer.. who appears to have resigned her post for the mo' (last I heard from her, her cat had peed on the list of bondbirds ... hmm.) to .... K'Tara Windblade? (was that right?) BTW, K'Tara, once you have a list, could you send me one too? just to be sure Raul is who he says he is. ;) and find out the Mystery of The Lost Partner... heh... <'lendel vs van?> :'Lendel's the best :-) I don't care if he's shaych, I just want to give :him a big 'ol hug and be his best friend. ;-) that's an ambition that many can aspire to. which is my question to the other oldbies. I've heard of groups championing van, and firesong (heh, i started one), but what about ole 'lendel? forgive me, i wasn't here when the mage war sparked off (i think i was a few months late on that one). from stuff going around lately, he appears to be a tinge unpopular... *scheming thought bubble appears on top of Shadowblade's head and she pops it with a sharp needle sheepishly* hey... this seems to be getting to a duologue yah? :) :I get it, and I do agree. And the only time they got a Bard there was when Shanse dropped by after he got out of Lineas? isn't that kinda long for the tunes to be considered "new"? :And perhaps, there may be a difference between being able to compose and :being able to Compose. So Stef knew this? Eeps. Guess I must go flog myself whilst I re-read Magic's Price. I was under the impression that the only thing he knew was that he loved Van. Also, was it just me or did anyone else not get the same feeling between Stef and Van as they did between 'Lendel and Van? Maybe it's just 'cause we had 'Lendel and Van built up over the past two books or something... BTW, since we seem to be comparing places that have large gay/bi populations, come and take a look at Ithaca. We've got the largest percentage (not strict numbers, but a large percentage) of active gay/bi people in the country, according to a few polls. Of course, that may simply be because we have a very *loud*, active population, but who knows. :) Keeps life interesting. Someone (lost the message, so cannot braid. Forgiveness please) was asking about other authors who have homosexual or bisexual characters in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy realm. If noone else, there's always Heinlein. Of course, it's my humble belief that his characters are bi solely to avoid exluding a large percentage of the population from their beds. re: Storms Trilogy: like'em or not? I really liked this trilogy, but my main reason was Tremane. I really enjoyed his character. But then again, that's what drew me to ML in the first place: Good leaders who really care about the ones they are leading. Trustworthy. Ya know? Bad guys are leaders who don't care about their followers. Re: Serrataed Edge Books I liked 'em too, but they do get very dark at times. I liked the connected between those books and the Diana Tregarde Investigations, though. Reading through High Jinx and noticed reference to Tanim and grinned. Was fun. :) Speaking of, anyone know when the next Diana Tregarde Book is coming out? That's all fer now. :) Cheers, Salut, and Bottoms Up! There's a series of fantasy books by a couple of Canadian authors in which bisexuality is the norm in the culture. Limiting yourself to one sex or another is considered very unusual... I can't remember either the name of the books or the authors (never read them, but heard about them from my sister) but I can find out if anyone's interested :-) Adam ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 1767 **********************************
