Why is it that we always go straight to the Valdemar series for everything? I mean it's not like she hasn't done others. Let's see.... In _Knight of Ghosts and Shadows_ Eric spent most of his time drunk in the first two chapters and he did 'recreational' umm.. pot, I think it was, once. After that he was kinda too busy to get drunk, what with having to save the elves and all, but from what I picked up he'd been doing stuff like that for a long time. The drinking and stuff I mean. The amazing part was, he didn't seem to be addicted. And then there was Prince Terenil who was addicted to Coke..... In _Summoned to Tourney_ Eric had stopped drinking and using 'recreational' drugs, but that was mostly because they were trying to hide and Eric was known for that kind of stuff. There's probably more in other books of hers, like the SERRATED Edge, but I don't know what it is. I haven't managed to get around to the other series quite yet. Hmmm.... I don't know that the Heralds could do much. Drugs seem to be illegal around Velgarth, but they are just as much a presence there as in RL. It seems that there are gaols or something for minor offenders, I think, because Skif said something about how he would have ended up there. you know, there seem to be more ex-theives and nobles in the Heralds than those of other occupations. Of course, the jobs are remarkably similar... I wonder what the connection is. I suppose that the Companions feel they have to save the kids from fates in politics of jail., while farmers serve a purpose in society. And I agree about drug addicts. Most addicts, I think, either are dead quickly, or serve as useful and functional members of society. It's mostly the fact that a black market supplies the drugs that crimes are committed. An out-of-control addiction will kill the druggee off if the drugs are easily availiable, and no one else will die in the process. Callous, but oh well. And people would be more open about their addictions and inclined to get help, if drugs were legal. And a big hug for jmg300. I wish I could help you out. In NC, if you are drunk and kill someone in a motor vehicle altercation (mind I do not say accident, when you drink and drive, I believe it is on purpose) you are charged with murder, not manslaughter, but premeditated murder. The penalty for premeditated (or 1st degree) murder in NC is either death or life in prison without possiblity of parole. There has been one person convicted of murder in a DWI case. The person in question killed a 4 year old girl. He is now a life time guest of the state in our splendid penal institution called Central Prison. This person had been convicted of DWI more than 10 times prior to the one in which he killed. There is another on on trial now. I am not sure of the details, but I do know he had been convicted of DWI's several times, his license had been permanatly revoked, he was using stolen tags, and the vehicle was uninsured. I also believe that NC charges people now with higher crimes for the victims that live. I am not sure of the exact charge that is brought against the perpatrator, whether it is assault by motor vehicle or attempted murder (I prefer the attempted murder). ******************************************************************* Ob-Misty. I must be one of the strange ones. I loved the Winds and Storms trilogies. I wasn't the biggest fan of the Gryphon series. I didn't particularly like the LHM series, which it seems that most love. ******************************************************************** Oh well, I guess that's all for today Judy -- "Insanity takes its toll.....Please have exact change" "Where the hell are the singin' cats?" -- Paul Newman "Surely, you can't be serious!" My hypothesis!: In the book with Van and 'Lendel, Misty focuses more on Van's emotions than 'Lendel's, and in that relationship, Van is the more "needy" of the two, or dependent. Therefore, the relationship comes across as very deep and meaningful. In the book with Van and Stef, Misty switches a few times between Van and Stef's point of view , and in most cases Stef's point of view only displays frustration. Even when Van and Stef get together at Forst Reach, Stef knows that Van is going to brood over it and try to talk him out of it. Therefore, the relationship between Van and Stef appears to be a littlew more fragile, even weaker, if you will. When, in truth, they are probably about the same. It's all in the interpretation, and I think that point of view has a big impact on that. I'm sure the Eastern Empire, with its larger >and more crowded population centers, must have drug-using communities. >There may even be mages who produce recreational drugs (or magical >equivalents) for profit. Although other drugs aren't really discussed, alcohol is rather prevalent in the background of all of her books. Even though it is mainly used as "just a drink" the characters still get drunk on occasion-- Van on his way to Haven in MPawn, Van and Stef at their first meeting, 'Lendel drinks a little wine to "warm up" and relax when he's reading the weatherworking book -- it's all there. And there are a couple of mentions of addicts -- the old woman who Stef grew up with, she is referred to as an alcoholic. So addiction is there, even in Valdemar. As for drugs, I don't think they would have "man-made" drugs, but things like black mushrooms that are mentioned when 'Lendel talks about his mother's suicide-- much more natural items, I'm sure there are several of them that people get addicted to. But I don't think Misty is trying to portray the Heralds as ER doctors, so she doesn't mention instances of addicts that they have to help. Judy: >Ob-Misty. I must be one of the strange ones. Everyone's entitled to their own opinions. Like in my English class, we keep talking about these three appeals to people come up with by Aristotle: ethos- ethnical/character appeals pathos- emotional appeals logos- logical appeals Some people take to different appeals differently, I think. LHM is a very emotional series, people drawn in more by pathos would be more attracted to them. I think that's all for today... :-) -ty -from the hizouse, home of the fWo Puddle-Jumper Extraordinaire, Magic Breeder of Chickens in the Land of Plastic, Bondmate to Companion Erik http://www.geocities.com/paris/lights/8308 ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 1771 **********************************
