Everything she could possibly want? Back up. Okay, she was royalty, that's a major plus--but her father tried to kill her mother to take the throne, causing her mother to avoid dealing with her for a nice chunk of her childhood. She got passed over to a nurse who taught her to be the biggest pain in the rear that Valdemar had ever seen, to the point where even her mother sometimes called her 'the Brat'. This same nurse had a lot of fun teaching her to be afraid of Companions, etc. etc. Another person had to come in and give her what amounted to extensive therapy. This is bound to leave a few psychological scars, folks, even if they're not big glaring ones. In the process of this therapy she was taught not to see her royal status as all that much to be proud of. Her mother still was not the closest, warmest, most loving parent despite her best efforts, there's still folks who see Thanel's shadow on his daughter, and now enter Daren and Lyra and Kris, making up a happy family that Elspeth likely doesn't always consider herself a part of. This is likely to make her at least a tad uneasy with The Way Things Are. And, quite frankly, compared to all the people around her (Talia, Skif, Alberich, Kero, Selenay, Daren, the twins, other nifty members of the Heraldic Circle) exactly how special is she? She has a talent for fighting--so what? She's the Heir--that's as much responsibility as privelege, and she's not quite suited to the life she's in. She'd probably have managed it all right, but it didn't and wouldn't have satisfied her. She's a stubborn, vibrant, strong-willed person and she'd rather go out and chase down a life for herself than have it all charted out for her. Sure, it's not life-shattering Trauma, but even for angst addicts like me the Trauma can get a little old. (Small query here--*were* Elspeth and Darkwind lifebonded? I don't recall it ever being mentioned, though I could be wrong.) Rant over, sorry if I got a little carried away. I happen to like Elspeth. She reminds me a little of me. I firmly believe in giving children a full scope of reading. My daughter, 5, just starting to read has everything that I can buy at her disposal. I read anything that is too hard for her to read to her, within her age limit to comprehend. Including Fantasy, NO Misty, YET!!! As a child, I had all these ideas in my head and only read traditional fiction. I didn't realize that their was works like Misty's out there...Yea got all the way thru 14 years of school and didn't know or read any sci/fi/fantasy. I think that our children should be treated like any great work. We give them everything we can, put ourselves into the work of raising them into theirselves, not into what we want them to be. And to love them. She slowly raises her head, shakes her mane of red, winks and with a small flash of darkness, vanishes from the hall... He is one :of my favorite chacters and he only got in depth attention in the 2nd :Storm book. I personally want to know more about him. YES! yesyesyesyesyesyesyesyes!!!! He definately should have gotten more "screen time"... can you tell I'm a fan? ;) he's like great for character development, the kind Misty used to do with Van, all the building blocks are there, she just doesn't _use_ it. argh! :) :There's going to be a book about Laven Firestorm? I hope so. I really :really really want to know more about Valdemars past. Am I the only one? :I'd like to read about Sunsinger and Shadowdancer and about the times :when most of the Companions where Groveborn and more about Savil. What :do ya'll want to know more about? yes. well. the book on Lavan is supposed to be called Brightly Burning or something like that. Misty has already said that she would not be writing on the Singer and Dancer (no idea why). yeah.. Baron Valdemar's flight would have been interesting, but she also said that she won't be going into that... right, Korendil? (is he here?) I'm re-reading LHM. and, don't worry Silveryna, I'll get on with Eric and Terenil once I pick up KoGS. looks like it's going to be an essay... ;) hmm year of the Pig, Oceania? ;) talking about indian...
