There's a lot of crime out there directly related to drugs -- mainly theft so that addicts can support their habits. What do you think should be done with them -- pat them on the head and tell them they have a problem? I saw a car theft in broad daylight in Amsterdam, and have watched cars abandoned by the side of the road here in Hawaii become totally ripped apart within a day due to break ins. Not all of that is due to drugs, but a lot of it is. It takes a lot of money to buy crack, etc. Take them off the streets, put them in a rehab program. Don't let them keep running loose -- unless that is, you like having the things you worked hard for ripped off. I think your "danger to society" needs to be redefined. It has rained for the past four days straight here in Kansas and all the towns are flooded out. It happened so fast that people barely got out and many of them had to leave their pets. One of my professors lost 70 rare books when his house flooded. So far it has rained 10 inches in some areas and the rivers are just starting to go down. I apologize if this seems like a rant or an attack, I usually like rain. its just that there has been a little too much lately. obMisty...........um..Does anyone else want to hear more about the early history of Iftel. The little bit in the Storms books made me very curious about what exactly happened. Oh, and I like Elspeth. She is headstrong and judgemental, but when you think about it in the long run she has never made a bad final decision. She was right to go to the Hawkbrothers for teaching, to help Darkwind, to fight Ancar and Falsconsbane, to recounce the crown, to support Tremane etc. etc. She may make snap decisions but in the end her final actions were the right ones. Greg didn't say that something like theft should not be counted, he just did not use it as an example. I had thought of his statement 'some other crime' in that it encompassed all theft, from simple burglary to mass murder... basically where you cause a wrong-doing upon another. I would suppose that in Valdemar, a drug addiction would be seen as a private problem. I agree with the idea that those who have children or others depending on them that are addicted should have those people taken out from under their care, seeing as they are unfit to take care of themselves. While in the smaller cities and towns, I can see the Heralds taking over that role of seeing who is and is not fit, would you suppose that the Guard would do that in the larger ones? Also, how much crime do you supposes goes on in Haven overall? While it is the 'Capital of Goodie Tooshoos,' it is still a major city... --- Amy asked if anyone was interested in Iftel's earlier years... I am! *g* I think it would be a wonderful idea for Misty to look into Iftel. It would do two things: one, allow her to write in a Velgarth-based society; two, allow her to write something that is almost entirely separate from Valdemar (the early years, remember). I would like to see, not how the system came about, but what it would be like for someone to live in the warrior system that they did. Politics, blood, feuds.. and no Herald or Companion in sight... 'twould be interesting indeed :). I would like to see an alternative to the U.S.'s current prison system, which seems to be a finishing school for criminals (my father worked in a prison for many years, so I do have some knowledge about this). Some of the cons taught him ways to break in a house that have helped me out a lot when I have locked myself out. 8-) Anyway -- I always liked Skif the best of Mercy's characters because of his background and ability to adapt and overcome. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Nov 1998 16:06:51 +0100 From: Autumnleaf-+AT+-t-online.de (Marion) To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Poodle/Halloween/drugs in Misty's Message-ID: Listsibs, bondmates and Pookas, erhem. Well, in Germany, you don't celebrate it at all as it is the day of the dead. On Nov. 1st, Catholics go visit their deceased family members (or friends) at the cemetry bringing them "gifts" (candles and flowers). I personally leave some food, flowers and a burning candle for my ancestors and those deceased, that were close to me, outside on the night from Oct. 31st to Nov. 1st. It's an old Celtic custom I read about some years ago. I liked it so much that I have carried it out ever since. ************************* Oops, I think I need a real ObMisty. *smoke rises from her ears while she thinks hard* Greg wrote: >Misty doesn't seem >to deal with drug abuse much, if at all, in her books. A friend of mine took me to see a psychic a few years ago, the appointment was made in the name of a friend of his so there is no way she could have found anything out about me. Well I was there for an hour and she told me so much about my past that it wasn't even funny. Then she told me about jobs she saw me doing, teaching and owning a restaurant. Well I was working towards getting high enough grades on my degree to enable me to get on a Post Grad teaching course and I did a catering management course about 9 years ago. She told me that I had a gift but that I needed to listen to it more [I have had a few things happen where I predicted something before it happened etc]. She told me about my Spirit Guide and many other things which have happened in the time since I saw her. One of the names she mentioned ended up being the name of my co-counselor when I went to summer camp that year. The only thing that kind of freaked me was the getting married in later life and 2 kids. Well as I have said before I rate myself as a 5 on the Kinsey scale of sexuality [ almost entirely gay with the very occasional lapse] Does this mean that the very small part of me that is str8 is going to raise its head and suddenly become dominant? > > Next to Van and 'Lendel I know Firesong is my favorite, sometimes I > think it's a three-way (now that could get interesting -- yanks mind > out of the gutter --) tie over who's on top.
