Nope. The first Monarch's Own in LHM(ie before Shavri)was Lancir. He was a mindhealer certainly - Savil specifically referred to him as such after Tylendel's suicide(MPawn, p. 231). Wasn't the Mindhealer in LHM called Lancir? I think he was Queen's Own for Elspeth the Peacemaker, yeah, but Mindhealing doesn't seem to be more than obliquely related to the Healing Gift. A person with just Mindhealing could probably enter the Healer's Collegium, but they never said that Lancir did or didn't. Rynee in Arrows is a Healer and seems to have Mindhealing as well--but she, of course, was not Chosen. And they never said whether Talia had Mindhealing or if she just had a knack for counseling. Maybe they're one and the same, who knows? I think Shavri was one of very few, if any other, cases--didn't Van note that a Herald-Healer was an oddity? I believe that's just because they were Herald-Mages, and I believe it was Donni who was actually touching Van's wrists, she must have had some healing ability. But they weren't MindHealing, just Healing healing, and Donni had other gifts for which she was chosen. So far as I know there are very few MindHealing Heralds in all of ML's books. Misty doesn't really address the Monarch's Own very often, except a little with Shavri and Lancir, but they don't really play a major role. It would certainly be interesting to see some kind of short story about a Monarch's Own. I haven't read any of the short story books... anyone know if there is anything like this? Does anyone have any recommendations on how to get into Owlflight? I don't know if it's because I'm too busy with college classes or if I'm too lazy or if the book hasn't really caught my interest yet. I think I've read 2 or 3 chapters.. it just seems to be kinda slow. Yep, that would be obvious. Anyhow. I'm a fifteen year old female with a thing for Greek names...right. Now the interesting (ie. Mercedes Lackey) stuff about me. I started reading a year earlier, when I was flipping through the fantasy section in the library. I was looking for anything that looked like the beginning of a series, and what I found was "Book 1 of the Last Herald Mage". Being Book 1, and looking interesting, I took it home, and didn't actually read it for two weeks. When I did, I was totally amazed...the problem was, I was completely out of cash, and the library didn't have the next two. *shudder*. My father is somewhat conventional, so if I'd asked him to get the next ones for me, he probably would not have been pleased with the content. So I had to wait quite a while (several months!) before getting the next ones. In between time, I read the Arrows series, which was all in the library. Other comments...My favourite (yes..favourite. I'm Canadian. HA!) book would be either LHM or By the Sword. LHM when I feel depressing, BtS when I..don't. BtS was read in a very good time of my life, so I feel happy whenever I read it. As for characters...my favourite by far is Kerowyn (that's of main chars). Somebody awhile back (I've been reading the archives for longer than would be deemed healthy) said something about becoming attached to minor characters, and scouring the book for mentions of them. I do that ALL the time. Some chars I liked were: Lissa, Shallan, Dirk (okay, he's not really /minor/, but...), and just about any shaych female. Speaking of which. The word 'shaych' was never used for a female, was it? They used she'chorne for both in Shin`a`in, so I assume shay`a`chern could be used for either. The odd thing about me and Misty books. Talia annoyed me. I don't know why, exactly, she just did. I liked the Arrows series a lot, but Talia herself seemed...not too perfect, exactly... Oh well. I know some of you weren't too pleased with Elspeth, but I really liked her. Maybe because she reminds me of myself. (No, I'm NOT a princess that I know of.) Another odd thing. The first time I read Magic's Pawn, I thought it was a really great book, but the second time I read it was when I got emotionally...affected by it. I have a question; how many of you knew that Vanyel would die before you read Magic's Price? I did, having read quite a few of the other books by that time. Not that I didn't still enjoy the book. Anyhow. I'd best finish this before I /really/ get going. ~Myself, Kallia Electra of scary titles. Message-ID: <19981106045219.24528.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> Hey everyone! I doubt anyone remembers lil ol' me; I've been off the list a looooonnnnnggggg time. So long, in fact, that I can probably count myself a newbie again. If splooshing is still in order, I await the inevitable. On to the main point of this letter: Misty's new book, Owlsight. I don't know about anyone else (and I'd love some other opinions on this book) but I was rather disappointed. Frankly, I don't think it was of the quality of the Valdemar books. My main complaint is that the book resolved itself WAY to easily. There was no suspense - there was never a problem that I couldn't see an easy solution to right around the corner. Also, the summary on the back flap is rather misleading; it implies that Darian, Keisha, and the Hawkbrothers are forced to face a barbarian tribe alone, while in the book they actually have three squadrons of Valdemar guard (including some of Kero's skybolts) at their beck and call. There was really no problem at all - it was made clear from the beginning that the Valdemar/Hawkbrother side had the advantage in numbers, weaponry, magic, basically everything imaginable. Really, I'm not sure that the barbarian threat was even worth writing about. Now that I'm done complaining, I guess the only thing to do is wait for the third one (Owlknight). But frankly, after Owlflight and Owlsight, I'm not to hopeful about this one. Sorry that this was mostly negative - I don't have time fore a really long post (homework, etc...sigh). I extend turkey flavored sheep (early Thanksgiving treat) to all. -Willowsong P.S. Chinese horoscope add: mine is the year of the boar/pig/insert appropriate synonym. I was never particularly thrilled about being the year of the pig - personally, I'd go for the dragon. My normal horoscope is Pisces (water baby!!) and I love that. Whoever wrote about celtic horoscopes, I'm also curious as to how I would find mine. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 06 Nov 1998 01:55:53 PST From: "Tea'la S." Somewhat grumpily he says to Kalen:"Shantaya asked me to bring you some of my favourite trifle. It's with real strawberry jelly and the best custard you will find this side of reality. And she said I was not to dump it on your head because you are down and need some comfort. Isn't that unfair?" Whit that he hands over the bowl of home-made trifle and shuffles off. At one of the tables he picks up a bowl of salad and sneaks up to Kallia Electra. (Or is it Saraphina Periwinkle?) With a quick look around he makes sure that neither of the two bearers of the Enchated Bucket (TM) are near. When he can`t see his Mistress Shantaya neither, he pours the contents of the bowl onto the unsuspecting Newbie. "WELCOME!!! WELCOME!! WELCOME!!!" Grinning he slaps her back and tells her: "We are glad to have you with us. Enjoy the madness and beware of bucket-wielding ladies." In a much better mood Torell wanders off to find Morgan, another Newbie. In passing a table laden with fruit he graps another bowl without looking at the contents. He approaches the unsuspecting Morgan with one of his friendliest grins that remind people of a big, fat and happy baby. "WELCOME TOO!" he shouts and tilts the bowl over Morgan's head. Beautiful red, white and yellow rose petals flow over her, giving a nice scent to the air. "Enjoy the conversations and don't forget to read the newbie-fest. Actually, I always assumed that Donni and Mardic were doing what any Herald Mage with a fetching gift could do: physically controlling the loss of blood. Let's face it, if you can loft an arrow and string to the top of a tower with your gift, you can surely keep blood from seeping out of a wound. I would think that any reasonably well-trained Herald with a fetching gift could do a lot of basic healing (the field medicine type). The Healing Gift seems to be qualitatively different from Fetching, in that Healers can work on a much smaller scale (microscopic, apparently) and they can actually stimulate and accelerate the growth of cells in the body. Maybe someone with a degree in biology could think of a way for conventional Fetching to do this, but I can't. =) Hmmm. Do you think that a really good Healer could actually do genetic engineering? Anne McCaffrey had a psionic character who could, but she is definitely a different writer, and much more inventive about the use and range of the Talents in her books. BTW, someone asked a while back about whether Misty were interested in archaeology and education. I can't say one way or the other, however, as far as "The Ship Who Searched" goes, I think that was mostly all Anne McCaffrey. If you read enough of Anne's stuff, you quickly realize that she is interested in archaeology and that she finds higher education to be a fascinating background for stories. She has a number of short stories set in various universities (Dull Drums, her "wendy" stories), as well as a variety of pseudo-educational entities (the Optarian Guild, the Heptite Guild, the Parapsychic Organization, the AT&T bases, etc.) And while Anne isn't quite as much a fiend for archaeology in her books as Andre Norton (have you noticed that more than half of Andre's books revolve around archaeology themes, particularly her science fiction?), she definitely has a thing for rediscovering the past (The White Dragon, e.g.). Anyway, just thought I would snatch a moment to actually post something contentful, rather than a "Council" post. =) May the seas be your solace and the forests a refuge for your spirit, Cennydd Councilor of Mist Kenneth Allen Hyde | No matter how subtle the wizard, a knife Univ. of Delaware | between the shoulder blades will seriously Dept. of Linguistics | cramp his style -- Old Jhereg proverb kenny-+AT+-Udel.Edu | A mind is a terrible toy to waste! -- Me //www.ling.udel.edu/hyde/prof/ken.html ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 1776 **********************************
