Ms Lee's job was to make the book attractive, very hard when all they're wearing is brown. The whole idea of cover art is to draw potential buyers, both current fans and new ones. And second, you're assuming she actually read the book, which isn't likely as she would be painting the cover with nothing but a description from the art editor; even as misty was busy writing it. So book covers can't really be judged by textual accuracy, but have to be judged by the talent of the individual. And Tarma is fairly good looking because, believe it or not, it's very difficult to draw someone who is _realistically_ ugly. > And, just MHO, but I LOVE the drawings of Firesong! Is it inappropriate to sign yourself with such a name if you aren't part of the official fan club? I think I understand the limitations of designating some type of rank (herald-trainee, herald, bard) until you've done the work, but I was unsure about a plain ol' name.... Elspeth's eyes: I was pondering this and came up with this thought: as writer when you develop and work with a character, moving them from the realm of a minor character to a major character, your own images of that character are bound to change. It would have been nice if Misty had been constant on Elspeth's eyes (to say nothing of her intelligence - how did she go from having a lot of problems with her classes in AoQ to super student in Winds?), but I can kinda understand how it can happen. Elspeth wasn't a fully fleshed out character in AoQ, but Misty developed her into one in her subsequent books... which kind of begs the question: why did she have to make almost everyone who is a major character hyper smart and/or hyper good with weapons and/or magic? Can't you be "normal" and be a major character? or does something in the nature of being a major character (the experience he/she goes through) change them from normal to something special? and would we like it/read it if the characters were normal? okay, enough philosophy .... So, what is next in the owlseries .... let's see .. owlnight? owllight? owlright? :-) ***warning this next part talks about OWLFLIGHT/OWLSIGHT**** spoiler...... I hope that's enough space.... In Owlflight (OF?) [okay, it might be owlsight - the names are close enough that I can't keep straight which is the first and which is the second] Firesong is portrayed as having "mellowed" and "grown-up" (although what the two have to do with each other I'm not sure....). So his reaction to balding might be a little different than what he's protrayed as in the earlier books. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Nov 1998 19:14:36 GMT From: "Kalen [One In Black]" <95662014-+AT+-mmu.ac.uk> To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: People I can relate to Message-ID: <69B7E411A4A-+AT+-alnilam.mmu.ac.uk> > From: "Joey Burgess" > My name is Joey and I am new to this list. Strangers see the tan skin, silver hair, feathers, beads, colorful silky clothes -- and of course bondbirds -- and are struck by the sheer ~outlandishness~ of the Tayledras as compared to what they've seen. It doesn't occur to people to compare them to their normal standards of beauty. While I'm on the subject, it seems to me that the term "hawkbrothers" isn't exactly PC. Why not "hawk-kin" instead? *sigh* Because this is the way Misty wrote it. I know, I know. Though that would make an interesting twist of words for an alternate universe-type story.... Okay, my Misty-fan bus buddy says that in the picture of Darkwind offering Elspeth (>=P) the feather in WoChange (? the 2nd book of Winds; I've lent it out *sigh*), Darkwind looks like Larry Nixon. As a college student who is just trying to get enough sleep and good enough grades to keep my scholarships, I don't really have enough time to try to plan something that detailed out. I did start writing a story with me and a companion, but I never rolled and the story is only half finished. I'm also in the process of trying to legally change my name to Tylendel, anyway... so I hope you folks don't think I'm trying to rip Misty off or something by having that as my name up with my email address. Most people call me Ty, and that is actually the name I prefer now. But I'd certainly love to share stories and things from Queen's Own.. I was even thinking for awhile that I might start up my own group, althoug that would probably be difficult with copyrights and stuff... anyone know how that works? I was just thinking that maybe I could run some kind of forum just for sharing stories, not even under the Valdemar name, but just fantasy stories in general. It's a thought, anyway :-) Elsa: > While I'm on the subject, it seems to me that the term "hawkbrothers" >isn't exactly PC. Why not "hawk-kin" instead? *sigh* Because this is the way >Misty wrote it. Though it would seem to make sense, I don't think it's that big of a deal. Plus there's probably something in Misty's mind that said "hawk-kin" or something similar wouldn't have that "ring" to it like "hawkbrothers" does. ;-) > I thought it was inappropriate to use Misty's names at all (like >Ashkevron and Kethryveris; she can't copyright Eric), but I may be wrong. >Whadda ya mean, 'official fan club'? While I don't think it has any rights to Misty's copyrights it is backed up by Misty or something along those lines. Nobody's had a problem with me using Tylendel yet... it's not like I demand to be called "'Lendel" or something along those lines. Though who knows. There has to be a point where freedom comes into play and I can be called whatever the heck I want to. ;-) -ty -from the hizouse, home of the fWo Founder of the Nifty Hair Club and Phreaking Club Puddle-Jumper Extraordinaire, Magic Breeder of Chickens in the Land of Plastic, http://www.geocities.com/paris/lights/8308 ICQ: 20439692 AOL IM: Tylendel33 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Nov 1998 16:35:51 PST From: "- Willowsong -" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: hawkbrothers/names Message-ID: <19981113003551.1813.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> Heyla all! Well first off (IMHO, of course) Hawk-kin just doesn't have the same exotic, mysterious, etc. etc. ring to it that Hawkbrother does. Also, I believe that PC terms only came into fashion around the late 80s (along with spandex ), and bear in mind that Velgarth is set in a time period considerably before the 20th century. And lastly, they are at least halfway PC in that they use Wingbrother and Wingsister (correct me if I'm wrong here, I don't want to walk all the way across my house to get text evidence. Yes, I'm lazy.) So they're trying, at any rate. ~Willowsong~ ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Nov 1998 16:30:00 PST From: "- Willowsong -" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Danya Winterborn's site Message-ID: <19981113003000.17200.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> Actually, there is a new e-group for those creating QO personas.
